Better Than Matip? Redknapp hails 'superb' €32m powerhouse who rejected transfer to Liverpool

After beating Man City 2-0 on Sunday, Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on top spot in the Premier League, and according to ex-Red Jamie Redknapp, Spurs' defensive brilliance is the main reason they're major title contenders this season.

In his column for the Daily Mail today, Redknapp insisted that Spurs' main target should be 'winning the league', adding:

"They [Spurs] have the best defence in the league, led by Toby Alderweireld who has proved [to be] superb value for money".

With only 3 goals conceded in 7 league games, Spurs are flying in defence, and it's no coincidence that Mauricio Pochettino utilises a dedicated defensive midfielder as part of his tactical plan. Victor Wanyama - who was heavily linked with Liverpool a few years ago - received the 'Man of the Match' award against City, and his performances this season (along with Eric Dier) are absolutely key to Spurs' defensive solidity.

Conversely, Liverpool have conceded 10 goals in the first 7 league games, and have the worst defensive record of any of the top 10 teams in the Prem. Despite this - and the fact that LFC's defensive record over the last three years is atrocious - irretrievably deluded Liverpool fans will still argue that the Reds don't need a dedicated DM.

On a related note: In 2013, Alderweireld* confirmed that he rejected a move to Liverpool because were too slow in making a move. Typical LFC, though transfer tardiness appears to be a thing of the past under Jurgen Klopp.
