Mignolet vs. Karius: Who should start against Manchester United? John Aldridge has called for Mignolet^ to be recalled, and the Belgium has made it clear today that he doesn't like sitting on the bench.
In his column last week for the Liverpool Echo, Aldo insisted:
"Karius has looked nervy. He's conceded from corners, and his distribution has not been fantastic. Mignolet should [play] at this moment in time".
When asked today about the Man Utd game, Mignolet admitted that it 'hurts' to be relegated to the bench, and insisted that he wants to 'play again as soon as possible'. He further explained:
“I didn’t play the last two weeks and I don’t want it to be any longer. I’m a lot more nervous on the bench, but the intention is to play again as soon as possibleI hope to play against United. I still feel confident because of my good league start [where] I was important for the team by making some good saves".
Karius obviously needs time to grow into his role, but Aldo is right - he has looked shaky during his first three games, and (concerningly), the German appears to have some of the same weaknesses as Mignolet (flailing at crosses/suspect distribution etc).
That said, irrespective of his past form, Mignolet has (for the most part) played well this season, and at this stage, it's debatable whether Karius is a significant upgrade.
