Over the summer, Liverpool were heavily linked with a move for Jonas Hector, and new reports this week suggest that Jurgen Klopp will make a renewed effort to sign the German international in January.
In July, Gazetta Dello Sport journalist Emanuele Giulianelli claimed:
"Jonas Hector...is close to joining Liverpool [who] will submit their offer in the next 24 hours. Hector is keen to join the Reds, and work with Jurgen Klopp".
Unsurprisingly, the alleged deal fell through, and Hector signed a new 5-year contract with Cologne, but according to reports in Germany this week:
* Spurs and Liverpool remain interested in signing Hector.
* Inter Milan are also interested, and are planning a €30m offer in January.
Given Hector's status as a regular for the German national team, a transfer to a bigger club is surely inevitable.
As such, Hector's new deal is probably a strategic move to ensure that Cologne get a bigger transfer fee in January (or next summer).
Of all the full-backs linked with Liverpool over the last year, Hector is arguably the most impressive option, and although James Milner is doing a solid job, he is clearly not the long-term solution.
^ Described by Koln boss Peter Stoger as an 'insanely good' player.
