Transfer Battle: Liverpool determined to sign £25m 'diamond' who played with Firmino. Klopp to replace Lovren?

The Niklas Sule rumours simply refuse to die, and new reports this weekend suggest that Liverpool face a three-way battle to sign the coveted defender.

According to The Mirror on Saturday:

"Liverpool are set to renew their interest in Niklas Sule. Arsenal and Tottenham have now joined the race, which could trigger a bidding war".

Last month, SportBild claimed that Süle 'refused offers' from top clubs in the summer, including Liverpool, Dortmund, and AC Milan. When asked why he rejected the chance to sign for a big European club, Süle explained:

"I need a familiar environment, and I have to constantly play at my level even further".

Sule - who played with Roberto Firmino from 2013 to 2015 - probably realised that he'd spend most of time on the bench at most of the aforementioned clubs, so he arguably made the right decision to stay at Hoffenheim.

That said, if he ends up leaving, I doubt Sule will quit Hoffenheim to sit on the bench; with other big clubs interested, he'll probably choose the team that offers him the best chance of regular first-team football.

That may be Liverpool, but only if Klopp's plan is to relegate Dejan Lovren to third-choice, and pair Sule with Joel Matip.

Perhaps Klopp doesn't see Matip/Lovren as a long-term solution for Liverpool?

* Dec 2015: Described as a diamond by Hoffenheim general manager Alexander Rosen. £25m-rated
