Over the summer, Jurgen Klopp's unsuccessful pursuit of Leicester City full-back Ben Chilwell left Liverpool with limited cover at left-back, but it now transpires that Klopp had another target on his transfer wish-list.
According to sportmediaset this week:
"Over the summer, AC Milan received offers from Napoli and Liverpool for left-back Mattia De Sciglio".
Did Klopp pursue €25m-rated De Sciglio all summer, or did the Italian emerge as a desperate back-up option after the deal for Chilwell failed?
It's impossible to know, but De Sciglio - hailed as the 'new Maldini' in Italy - is (IMO) a much more palatable target than the grossly inexperienced Chilwell.
It's entirely possible that Liverpool will go back in for De Sciglio during the January transfer window, but it may be a waste of time as the 23-year seemingly wants to stay in Italy.
Indeed, when asked recently about De Sciglio's future, his agent told reporters:
"Napoli is one of the club's we've talked to. The Azzurri are definitely a great club. It's a great environment, and it would not be possible to say no."
It's probably for the best as (historically), Italian players never seem to settle at Anfield, but that has to change at some point, though, right?
