Transfer Update: After Carra criticism, Boss hails 'talent' of 'incredible' £72k-a-week Liverpool flop

Rejoice! Mario Balotelli is finally gone, and although Liverpool will take a massive financial hit, the deal is arguably the best move for both parties. Can Balotelli resurrect his career in France, or is game over for the Italian striker?

Nice president Jean-Pierre Rivere is certainly hopeful of getting something out of Balotelli, and after sealing the deal, he enthused:

“We are very pleased to welcome Mario. We hope that at Nice he will find the real pleasure of playing the game. We will allow him to flourish and his talent will come to the service of the team.”

Hmmm. This misplaced optimism sounds familiar:

* Aug 2014: Brendan Rodgers raved: "This transfer represents outstanding value. He [Balotelli] is a world-class talent with vast experience of at the highest level".

End result? 4 goals/0 assists in 28 games for Liverpool.

Balotelli's career has nosedived over the last few years. After all, he's still only 26, and there's ample time for him to turn things around. Reds legend Jamie Carragher isn't optimistic, though, and responding to Balotelli's Nice move, he scathed:

"Balotelli on a free is still paying over the odds by Nice".

Balotelli has signed a one-year deal with Nice, so he literally has one year to save his career. That said, even if it all goes pear-shaped for Balotelli, it hardly matters as he's probably rich beyond most people's wildest dreams.

Plus, he will reportedly be on £72k-a-week at Nice, so he's clearly landed on his feet. As such, Balotelli has little real motivation to turn things around.
