Agent Confirms: 'Fantastic' £120k-a-week assist-king rejected '14 clubs' to sign for 'Liverpool'

I'll be honest: I opposed Liverpool's decision to sign James Milner, but the ex-Man City star proved himself to be a valuable addition to the squad, and overall, he ended last season as Liverpool's top assist-provider. Prior to signing for Liverpool, Milner was coveted by many clubs, and his agent has now revealed the true extent of transfer interest.

Speaking to the 5-Times podcast this week, Milner's agent, Matthew Buck, revealed:

“He [Milner] had interest from Italy and Spain. In total, about 14 clubs made contact [but] we had a few meetings with Liverpool and James quickly realised that it was a challenge he wanted to take".

If I were the cynical type, I'd suggest that the £120k-a-week salary offered by Liverpool played a huge part in Milner's decision to join the club. After all, how many clubs are going to offer than amount of money to a bit-part player (for City and England) quickly approaching 30?

Ridiculous salary notwithstanding, Milner's stats last season are creditable, and I'm glad he proved me wrong:

* 21 goals/assists in 45 games (One every 167 mins).

* Joint 5th in the Premier League's top 10 assist-makers (alongside Riyad Mahrez)

Unfortunately, with Milner now being played out of position at left-back, it doesn't look like he's going to get the opportunity to match or exceed those creative figures this season.
