After two years of abject failure at LFC and Milan, I doubt many Reds fans expect Mario Balotelli to resurrect his career in France, but that hasn't stopped Liverpool inserting a rather optimistic clause in his new one-year contract with Ligue One club Nice.
According to The Telegraph:
"Liverpool have inserted a 30% sell-on clause [Balotelli's] contract, just in case he becomes Super Mario once again".
This appears to be a surprise, but sell-on clauses are standard practice with transfer deals, and in my view, it would've been more surprising if Liverpool had neglected to include such a clause.
Is Balotelli - who cost Liverpool €20m - capable of rejuvenating his career? Absolutely. Balotelli is only 26, and if he knuckles down, the best years of his career could still be ahead. Yes, it seems unlikely, but it's not impossible.
PSG star Marco Verratti certainly feels that 'wonderful' Balotelli can do it, and when asked this week about the Nice transfer, he told reporters:
"I am happy for his [Balotelli's] decision. Nice is the right club to reboot his career.”
Italy legend Andrea Pirlo is also a believer:
"Mario has the attributes to be one of the best strikers in the world. He still has time to make it to the top. If he has two or three good seasons, he will still only be 28 and could join one of Europe's top clubs".
I love a good underdog story, and I'm rooting for Balotelli to get it together. Can he do it?
