On Wednesday, Liverpool attacker Philippe Coutinho (deservedly) collected the 'Player of the Month' award for March, succeeding Roberto Firmino, who received the award in February. Coutinho is now into double-figures for goals this season, and when asked about his award, the Brazilian reserved special praise for 'amazing' Firmino, who is having a fairly productive debut season.
Speaking to LFC.com on Wednesday, Coutinho raved:
"Firmino is a great player [and] it easy to play beside him. He is a strong player who scores a lot, so he is a very important player for our team".
How do Coutinho and €40m-rated Firmino compare this season?
* Coutinho: 15 goals/assists in 33 apps (One every 167 mins).
* Chances Created: 66 (One every 38 mins)
* Firmino: 18 goals/assists in 38 apps (One every 143 mins).
* Chances Created: 65 (One every 39 mins).
In terms of creative output, there's not much difference between the two this season, but both are (arguably) underperforming in the goals/assists, and chance-creation departments, and this something of which Coutinho is acutely aware:
"In the position I play, I have to create chances, score and that is something I have to improve. I know I have to improve it. It is something I search for. I hope I am getting better at it and that I am helping my teammates".
Like most Liverpool fans, I love watching Coutinho play, and it'll be interesting to see if he can have a game-changing impact on the Dortmund game. In Firmino's (probable) absence, the onus will be on senior players like Coutinho, Lallana, Milner, and Henderson to step-up and make the difference.
