Prior to his recent injury, Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen was (arguably) one of Liverpool's most in-form players, and after another effective performance against Manchester United last Thursday, ex-Red Neil Mellor has hailed the £20m-rated Welsh midfielder as one of the team's most improved players.
In his column for the Liverpool Echo this week, Mellor raved:
"Joe Allen made a big impact. He's been excellent under Jurgen Klopp. Brendan Rodgers leaving has taken a bit of the pressure off him, [and] he has done very well".
Allen has 18 months left on his contract, but in a recent interview, he admitted:
“That [contract talks] has gone very quiet. I’ve only made one league start this season, so I want to play more. Now, it’s about giving my best, which is always what I do.”
Allen is currently linked with a return to Swansea City, and according to former team-mate Leon Britton:
"I know he misses Swansea and home so it'll be interesting to see what happens because I know his contract's running out."
Klopp recently claimed that Allen is a 'first-teamer', but with Grujic arriving, and one or two more midfielders on the radar, I just can't see where he'll fit in next season.
Allen in an excellent squad player to have, but at the age of 25, he's coming into his prime years, and I doubt he wants to spend the best years of his career watching from the sidelines.
Does Allen have a future at Anfield, or is the writing on the wall.
