Liverpool are currently linked with a summer move for Borussia Moenchengladbach star Granit Xhaka, in a new interview this week, the coveted midfielder has given the strongest indication yet that a move to the Premier League is on the cards.
In January, The Telegraph claimed:
"Liverpool could break their transfer record to sign Granit Xhaka. BM Gladbach want £37m for the player".
A month later, German newspaper SportBild reported:
"SportBild has learned that Jurgen Klopp had a meeting with [Granit] Xhaka's Agent in December 2015".
When asked today about Prem interest, Xhaka told Sky Sports:
"Everybody has a childhood dream and that [playing in the Prem] is my childhood dream. If my dream comes true, it remains to be seen. At the moment I cannot say how realistic it is."
Xhaka is a talented player, but his disciplinary record is atrocious:
* 40 yellow cards since the start of the 13-14 season. 8 yellows/3 reds in 23 games so far this season.
* Total: Eight suspensions in the last 2.5 seasons. 3 suspensions already this season (78 days out).
Is this worth £37m? The Premier League is more physical and frantic than the Bundesliga, so it's self-delusion to think that Xhaka will suddenly pick up fewer yellow cards in the Prem.
Additionally, to sign Xhaka, Klopp will almost certainly have to break his own personal transfer record, which currently stands at £19m for Henrikh Mkhitaryn.
£19m to £37m is a big jump, and based on his transfers for far (Caulker and Matip for free; Grujic for £5m), it seems unlikely that Klopp will spend so much money on one player.
Sporting Lisbon DM William Carvalho - another Liverpool target - is reportedly available for a similar transfer fee; given a choice between the two, who is the best value for money?
