There are few positives to take from Liverpool's Europa League bore-draw with FC Sion, but one thing that seems to unite fans about the game is Brad Smith's impressive performance at left-back. Smith looked comfortable at left-back, but according to Reds legend Jan Molby, the youngster still has a long way to go before becoming a regular first-teamer.
In his column for the Liverpool Echo today, Molby mused:
"The big positive was the performance of Brad Smith. He’ll be very satisfied with that. He’s got a lot of pace, that’s never been in doubt, and there’s still plenty of things for him to work on in his game".
Molby's moderate, low-key response is markedly different to Jordan Henderson's fawning reaction. After the game, Hendo - channeling his inner-Rodgers - raved:
"I thought he [Smith] was outstanding. Brilliant going up and down the left flank. He was dangerous for us, getting good crosses in."
Outstanding *and* brilliant? Give me a break. Hendo's comments are sickening exaggerated and arguably irresponsible. Smith had a decent game, but what's the point massaging his ego to this extent after just *one* full match?
Smith's Sion's Stats
* Passing Accuracy: 75%
* Tackles Won: 4
* Interceptions/Clearances/Blocks: 9
* Fouls Conceded: 4 (Most in the team)
* Lost Possession: 3 times.
* Forward Passes: 31 (48% of total passes)
* Backward Passes: 33 (51% of total)
* Successful Dribbles: 4
* Key passes: 1
Is Smith - who came close to leaving Liverpool over the summer - ready to dislodge Alberto Moreno in the team? Of course not, but with the heavy Christmas schedule coming up, he - like Connor Randall - is a good cover option to have in the squad.
