Liverpool are once again being linked with a move for Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland, but according to both Mark Hughes and Jurgen Klopp, there's no chance of a deal being concluded any time soon.
During Brendan Rodgers' reign, Liverpool reportedly held talks with Birmingham over a move for Butland, and according to TalkSport today:
"Butland drawing admiring glances from Liverpool [and] Jurgen Klopp is ready to sanction a £20m bid in January".
When asked today about the Liverpool rumours, Stoke boss Mark Hughes insisted:
"He [Butland] is going nowhere. People are aware of him - and they have been for a long time...but he needs a season-in-season-out of week-in-week-out in the Premier League".
Klopp has also dismissed the possibility of replacing 'magnificent' Mignolet , and in his pre-match press conference today, Liverpool's boss told reporters:
"Sorry to kill your stories about german goalkeepers, and goalkeepers from Stoke. We are not looking for another goalkeeper. Since I’m here there’s nothing to criticize [about Mignolet]. I hope it stays that way".
Brendan Rodgers made the fatal error or relying on Mignolet, and if Klopp makes the same mistake, then it'll be his funeral. It's utter nonsense to suggest there's 'nothing to criticise' about Mignolet, especially since he's as error prone this season as he's ever been.
That said, even if Liverpool are looking for a new goalkeeper, Klopp hardly likely to admit it in public, so here's hoping that the vote of confidence is just a man-management strategy. Denials aside, is Butland a viable option?
* JB: 31 goals conceded in 26 apps (1 every 74 mins)
* SM: 134 goals conceded in 113 apps (1 every 76 mins)
* JB: 8 clean sheets (1 every 290 mins)
* SM: 34 clean sheets (1 every 302 mins)
This Season
* JB: 15 goals conceded in 15 games (1 every 90 mins)
* SM: 19 goals conceded in 19 games (1 every 90 mins)
* JB: 5 clean sheets (1 every 252 mins)
* SM: 6 clean sheets (1 every 285 mins)
Butland's stats compare favourably with Mignolet's (this season, and overall), but FC Koln star Timo Horn - who is also linked with Liverpool - is outperforming them both.
In this particular case, Liverpool should stick Mignolet until Klopp can sign a truly top-class goalkeeper.
