Earlier this year, Liverpool were linked with a move for Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Sportiello, and with the Reds still (arguably) in need of a replacement for Simon Mignolet, the Italian 'stopper has all but confirmed (again) that LFC were interested.
In March, Daily Mail claimed that Liverpool were 'watching' Sportiello.
Soon after, £10m-rated Sportiello appeared to confirm Liverpool's interest, when told Italian newspaper L'Eco di Bergamo:
"Liverpool are definitely a great club - one of the top clubs in the world. However, I am happy to be here. This is my first year as a starter and I recently signed a new contract with Atalanta"
On Saturday, Italian newspaper La Gazetta Dello Sport claimed that Liverpool are 'contemplating a January move' for Sportiello, and when asked about this, the 23-year old hinted that a transfer may be a possibility:
"They had me joining Ajax, Stuttgart, Roma and even Liverpool but...I feel at home in Bergamo. I've worn this jersey for seven years and arriving in Serie A was fantastic. We'll see what happens in the future."
Sportiello: Primary Stats for Atalanta
* 68 goals conceded in 51 games (1.3 goals per games - 1 every 67 mins)
* 14 clean sheets (19% of games - 1 every 5 apps)
* Saves: 191 (3.7 saves per game - 1 every 24 mins)
Creditable stats overall, but how does Sportiello - described by ex-Atalanta coach Stefano Colantuolo as a 'miracle' goalkeeper' - compare to Simon Mignolet?
Mignolet: Primary Stats for Liverpool
* 129 goals conceded in 107 games (1.2 goals per game - 1 every 75 mins)
* 32 clean sheets (29% of games - 1 every 4 apps)
* Saves: 240 (2.2 saves per game - 1 every 40 mins)
There's no point signing someone with worse primary stats than Mignolet.
A manifestly better goalkeeper need to replace the Belgian, and of the current reported options, Timo Horn is a superior choice:
Horn: Primary Stats for FC Koln
* 111 goals conceded in 117 games (0.9 goals per game - 1 every 95 mins)
* 48 clean sheets (41% of games - 1 every 4 apps)
* Saves: 240 (2.2 saves per game - 1 every 40 mins)
