Transfer Update: Klopp pushing Liverpool to sign 'excellent' €25m attacker with 71 goals/assists in 110 games

Liverpool continue to be linked with 'excellent' Sassuolo star Domenico Berardi, and new reports today suggest that the Reds hope to sign Berardi sooner rather than later.

Earlier this month, the Liverpool Echo claimed:

"Klopp's number one target...is Sassuolo starlet Domenico Berardi [who] is said to be one of the most exciting young stars in Italy".

According to the Daily Express today, the Reds are preparing a January bid for Berardi, who is also being tracked by Chelsea, and Manchester United.

Klopp reportedly tried to sign Berardi for Dortmund, but an imminent transfer appears to be out of the question. When asked on Monday about Berardi's future, Sassuolo managing director Giovanni Carnevali told Italian newspaper Tuttosport:

"I can rule out a January move. That’s not part of our company policy, and we’re not a club that needs to sell".

Company policy or not, Sassuolo are not a financial powerhouse in Italian football, and in the words of Nino Brown: 'Money talks, and bullsh%t runs a marathon'.

Some info about Berardi:

* Versatile 6'1 forward who can play on both wings; as a lone striker, or a second striker.

* Berardi's agent on the 21-year old's best position: "He [Berardi] a winger, who does well in a 4-3-3 which best unlocks his power and potential. That said, he has so much technical quality and has the ability to play well in any position".

* 71 goals/assists in 110 games for Sassuolo (goal/assist every 1.5 games)

* Last season: 29 goals/assists in 35 games.

* 2013: Banned from international football for 9 months after failing to report to an U19 training camp.

* Arrigo Sacchi's view: "Berardi is a player of great talent, a modern footballer who plays for the team all over the field. He has liveliness, intuition, temperament and strength combined with a good technique."

* Jan 2014: Scored all four goals for Sassuolo in the club's 4-3 victory over AC Milan.

* According to Sassuolo, Berardi is worth €25m.

The Reds clearly need wingers, so if this rumour is true, it means that Klopp has immediately zeroed-in on one of the club's main transfer priorities.

That said, Liverpool have a poor history with Italian players, and signing another Serie A striker will probably not inspire much confidence in the fanbase.

29 goals/assist in Serie A is an excellent achievement, though, and Liverpool's luck with Italian player has to change sometime...right?

Unrelated, but pure genius :-)
