Last season, Liverpool's goalscoring problems derailed the club's chances of qualifying for the Champions League, and on this season's evidence, Brendan Rodgers has abjectly failed to fix the the problem. Despite spending £200m in the last two summer transfer windows, the Reds have scored a measly FOUR goals in SIX league games this season, which equates one goal every 135 minutes. To add insult to injury, even individual players are outscoring Liverpool's entire team.
For example: earlier today, Bayern Munich beat Wolfsburg 5-1:
* £30m-rated striker Robert Lewandowski scored five goals in nine minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute.
* So, in the space of 9 minutes, Lewandoswki scored more goals than the entire Liverpool team has managed in six league games this season.
Just think about that for a second. It's a total embarrassment, and another sad indictment of Liverpool's decline under Brendan Rodgers.
There are also players in the Premier League who have scored more goals than the Liverpool's entire team this season:
* Callum Wilson (Bournemouth): 5 goals
* Riyadh Mahrez (Leicester City): 5 goals.
* Gomis, Vardy, Pelle, and Ighalo have all scored 4 goals each, which is the same as LFC's entire team.
It's so mind-bogglingly ridiculous that it's almost impossible to comprehend. I just can't seem to get my head around the following:
How is it possible for a team of highly paid international players (including Lallana, Benteke, Coutinho, Milner, Firmino, Can, Sturridge, Origi, Ings, and Henderson (combined cost: approx £155m,) to *collectively* fail to outscore a £3m striker (Wilson) who was playing in the Championship last season?
There are no valid excuses, reasons, or justifications for this staggeringly inept state of affairs; it's just not good enough. Back in 2010, even the much-maligned Roy Hodgson managed to inspire his team to score 6 goals in the first 6 league games, and he got sacked after 6 months (!)
Four goals in six league games? Entire team outscored by relegation-level strikers? Seventeen other teams in the Premier League outscoring LFC, including Stoke, Norwich, Watford, Bournemouth, and bottom club Sunderland?
It's a disgrace, and an embarrassment to Liverpool FC.
