Anfield-bound? Liverpool fighting to sign 'classy' £12m record-breaking international with stunning stats for PSV

Liverpool are reportedly considering a January move for PSV Eindhoven left-back Jetro Willems.

According to multiple reports over the weekend:

* Liverpool and Manchester United are battling to sign the 21-year old left-back.

* PSV are scrambling to extend the youngster's current deal in a bid to ward off transfer interest.

Some info about Willems, described by PSV manager Philip Cocu as an 'classy' player:

* Left-back, who can also play as a left-midfielder.

* According to Man United's official website, Willems is valued in the £10m-£12m range.

* 142 apps for PSV (8 goals/27 assists = goal/assist every 4 games).

* Last season: 18 goals/assists in 38 games for PSV (Goal/assist every 2 games)

* 15 apps for the Dutch national team.

* Feb 2015: Sent off after just 29 seconds against NAC Breda. Fastest red card in Dutch league history.

* Jun 2012: Youngest player to ever feature at the European Championships. Featured in all three group games for the Netherlands.

* Aug 2015: Visited Newcastle United as a guest of Gregory Wijnaldum.

I'm rarely enthused by links to young players, but in this case, Willems' stunning creative stats are worth nothing.

It's a great achievement for a left-back to grab 18 goals/assists one season, and overall, Willems contributes a goal or an assist every 4 games at PSV, which is basically unheard of for a defender.

He'll probably end up at Man United, though. Willems formed an effective partnership with Memphis Depay at PSV, and reuniting the two makes sense, which is probably why Van Gaal is pursuing a deal.

If it comes down to a straight choice between Liverpool and Man United, then - as with Depay - the Van Gaal factor will probably make the difference.
