Transfer Update: 'Exciting' £29m attacker passes medical and will officially join Liverpool after holiday

After starring at the recent Copa America, 'exciting' new £29m signing Roberto Firmino is edging closer to being officially unveiled by Liverpool.

According to the Daily Mail today:

* Firmino - who has signed a five-year contract worth more than £100,000 per week - has passed his Liverpool medical.

* The 23-year-old Brazilian completed the medical in Sao Paulo, and will report for pre-season training after his holiday.

To be honest, this is only transfer so far that I'm actually excited about, and of all signings so, Firmino is arguably the only player who represents a significant upgrade on players already at the club.

The £29m fee means Firmino is the club's second most expensive signing of all time, but that aside, it's still one of the most exciting deals in years.

Firmino's recent stats:

* 2013-14: 22 goals/16 assists (38) in 37 apps (Goal/Assist every 0.9 games)

* 2014-15: 10 goals/12 assists (22) in 36 apps (Goal/assist every 1.6 games)

* TOTALS: 32 goals/28 assists (60) in 73 apps (Goal/assist every 1.2 games).

60 goals/assists in 73 games? That's a great achievement in one of Europe's best leagues, and it's clear that Firmino is currently proving himself to be one of Europe's most prolific attacking players.

The question is, where will Firmino play? At Hoffenheim, he's been most effective playing out wide, and that's where he spent most of his time during the 2013-14 season, when he smashed in 38 goals/assists in 37 games.

Coutinho's best position for Liverpool is the number-10 role, so both he and Firmino can slot easily into the same team. However, knowing Rodgers, I fully expect both players to be played out of position during various parts of the season.

It won't surprise me to see Firmino played on the right of a front-three, or as a false-9, and Coutinho will probably be forced to play wide left at some stage (which curtails his effectiveness).

One thing's for sure: with Ings, Sturridge, and Origi in the squad (and another striker almost certain to join), there's no real excuse to play Firmino as a lone striker.

I wouldn't put it past Rodgers to try it out, though...

  1. Would you not say Clyne is an upgrade on GJ???

  2. My sister would be an upgrade on GJ

  3. I personally thought GJ was a good player, but not as a right back, he has good pace, dribbling and has a good cross and shot, I don't understand why as BR plays all players out of position, why did he not try GJ in right wing as I personally believe he would be suited better to that, when you look at our form on that side last season, anyone is an improvement. Although I think our choice of main striker is crazy when Higuain can be got for £45m, Pedro for £35m, Lacazette for £30m, Jovetic for £16m or even Hernandez for around £14m. Any of the for mentioned would suit our style of play. But Benteke whom plays similar to Carroll whom BR got rid of when he began term at LFC stating the style he plays is not the way we will be playing. What a tosser if he now buys Benteke. YNWA

  4. I would say Clyne is also quite an exciting signing too as we got him for a meagre fee (For a British player from Southampton) and can establish himself as a balanced fullback in our first team for the next 6-8 years.

THE END TIME. Whilst being on holiday, i actually decided to stroke along the street. ..couldn't believe my eyes

  6. Nathaniel clyne is going to be the best RB we've had from when rob jones played for us. Fsg need to tell rodgers that there's not a chance in hell of them spending 32'million on benteke. If they don't then they obviously haven't learned from there past mistakes. I'm pretty sure we could get someone better than him for that sort of money.

  7. Illarramendi apparently wants his future settled before July 10 (unless I'm thinking of someone else) and Rafa is content with selling. BR better be on his case.

  10. Not to split hairs but Sky, BBC, Telegraph, Times etc all state that the fee was £21m not £29m. It will only rise to £29m if he hits all his performance add ons in terms of goals and trophies (I would imagine the last part for the full £29m is conditional on winning the league) so he was really good business, when you think what we paid for Lovren.

  19. Milner is an upgrade on Allen, Bogdan is an upgrade on Jones, Ings is an upgrade on Borini and Lambert (and Balo), Gomez is an upgrade on Lloyd Jones and 'Kanye' looks like an upgrade on young Harry Wilson/Sheyi Ojo.

ings an upgrade on Balotelli??? what.... your having a laugh.... its not Balo's fault BR only brought him on mostly as a sub or did not play him to his strengths.... ings in no way is an upgrade on Balotelli imo.... disagree with me i refer to the chance he had against portugal if he was better than Balo he would have burried that instead he didn't even test the keeper

    ReplyDelete
  26. ...whoa there brother...

that level of optimism is literally going to freak certain people on this forum right out....!

  28. voice of reason2:27 am, July 07, 2015

hahaha its not that... its just unfounded statements like Balotelli... an individual who was the first black man to start for italy.... aided city to win the epl... played in the champions league.... is worse than danny ings an individual who for all the glamour could not keep his previous club up in the epl... like seriously come on.... although Balo has not reproduced that form at LFC there are times like marcovic where he did show glimpses.... however poor management threw him under the bus

    ReplyDelete
  29. ...okay, VOR, you know already that you look at things in a much more technical fashion..

...I on the other hand see guys with two legs running aound on a pitch with football boots on being paid shed-loads of dosh to do the thing I'm shouting at the screen....."pass the f**kin' ball and shoot why don't ya..just score a goaaaaal"...

...so bearing that in mind, all I'm sayin' is i agree, balo is very world class and very naturally gifted....but.....gift is nothing without practice and application...mathew syed in his book 'bounce', david beckam, christano ronaldo, suarez...either propounded the theory or proved and/or are proving it..

...balo didn't really set the world alight at city and I'm not sure what happened after but do know we bought him for 15-16 mill not 40-50 mill..says alot bro...

..I know ings is not proven but I hope that the potential he shows is taken to the next level esp. now since two unknowns, in my mind, linders? and driscol? are apparently technical marvels....

    ReplyDelete
  30. voice of reason2:42 am, July 07, 2015

i am more comforable with pepjin (think i spelled it right) than driscol.... imo they might be safe replacements if Rodgers messes it up in the first half of the season... that said.... your right Balo has not lit it up and there's a reason why he was sold for such a low price but imo he has not done anything out of place for the season bar the penalty (but come on who else should have taken it but Balotelli).... hoping for the best for the new season we still need a top class striker (no benteke pls) and we should be ok..... ings imo we should have promoted sinclair or yessil else why recruit these players in the first place

    ReplyDelete
  31. ...man you know I respect your view VOR so I'm doing my best to follow and learn about different tactics during gameplay...as per penalty baloteli showed balls and desire in my book that's what it was...
...I'm sure you right, unless balo gets tactics to suit him and his game(i supose like spurs with studge) we'll never know about him...he did distinctly look like during the season he'd changed as a man and started really running harrassing the opposition and showing willingness...

..but i really like the idea of ings...young, hungry, mobile, will literally run through walls and is gifted too, ie can score in the premiership...

    ReplyDelete
  32. He posted a pic of a guy and a goat getting down... shocking yes, definitely share worthy I suppose... but here?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Dude relax. I know that balo is class, and that ings is nowhere near that level, but for us, ings is an upgrade because he clearly works way harder and is better suited to our game. Everyone keeps bringing up ings' miss like its the defining moment of his career, lest ye forget the plethora of gimmes that balo dropped over the course of last season. Ings had a misskick, balo had a season full of them

    ReplyDelete
  34. Totally :) im a fairly optimistic person, in fact im actually excited and looking forward to game 1

thanks i respect your opinion to DinMan..... not saying Ings is rubbish just imo ings and milner are two players we didn't really need (compounded by maybe the 6 million we have to give burnley if this goes to tribunal).... that said ings does show more hunger than all of our strikers (bar sturridge) and i hope he proves me wrong.... still keeping my fingers crossed for next season.... i am going to cross examine our pre season like a FBI interrogator..... and leaving all judgement till ending of october

    ReplyDelete
  36. voice of reason3:00 am, July 07, 2015

balo did miss some opportunities but he was in the position to score them something borini/lambert have failed to do most of the times they have been brought on.... can't compare Balo too those crooks (to be fair that might be too strong for Lambert who only wanted to reunite with his childhood club this like the milner transfer again imo was an unnecessary deal).... but your right Ings looks like he'll jump through fire if it calls for it.... that undieing passion is what i want noo need from all of the players that don on this famous red... so he does get props from me but not exceeding balo skills props

    ReplyDelete
  37. voice of reason3:11 am, July 07, 2015

true but to be fair he has always been a bit part player for city and england.... hence why i am a bit underwhelmed by the signing.... but hey i am all for getting proven wrong if it means LFC will rise to the top once again....

  41. Yeah but as an option off the bench, someone you know will come on in any position and go hammer and tongs at the opposition, thats a valuable squad member

    ReplyDelete
  42. voice of reason3:50 am, July 07, 2015

at the alleged (know i spelt that wrong sleepy) he is not going to be a sub.... meaning he will play at the cost of Can or coutinho depending on the formation and tactics underatken by BR as Firminho should be a nailed on starter

    ReplyDelete
  43. 1 goal vs 11 goals ?

    ReplyDelete
  44. an individual who was the first black man to start for italy...

Surely that has NOTHING to do with this argument?

    ReplyDelete
  45. Whats up with this Borini dude ,
Latest news that he has blocked a move to Italy after LFC and Lazio had agreed a deal !
Last year blocked a move to Sunderland of QPR and so LFC lost out on 10m.
Then his agent complains that he is being treated badly by LFC for not playing him enough ?

    ReplyDelete
  46. What has happened to LFC scouting team ?
Since the sale of Suarez ,LFC has not been able to find a top striker !

    ReplyDelete
  47. Whoa I missed alot, ok to sum up:
I dont think that Ings is a better player than Balotelli, I think that Ings is a better player for liverpool than Balotelli based on his style of play. I remain a big fan of Balo's and have no doubt that if we played to his strengths, he would bang them in. We dont, so from what I've seen of Ings, he is a better player for us.
If we play in a 4231, I think that, given our current midfield options, Milner starts with Hendo in the centre with Coutinho, Firmino, Ibe, Marko, Lallana or whoever in the attacking 3 spots. Not a popular opinion but I see can getting every 3rd-4th start and sub appearances in between. The kid is 21, he's not meant to be a nailed on starter and putting him in that role may not be the best. He isnt as godly as many would beleive, although I do think that with BALANCED playing time, he could be colossal for us.
I think Sinclair and Yesil should go another season on loan, they are both really promising but I dont think they are quite there yet. I've seen a bit of sinclair, but very little of Yesil to be fair.

    ReplyDelete
  48. He knew he wasnt wanted last season too just wants to do nothing run down his contract and get a decent signing on fee elsewhere.
As i have been saying all along lazy and greedy.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Is that Jillinthekop?

    ReplyDelete
  50. No it's him not you or Not You

    ReplyDelete
  51. The liverpool scouting team has been absolutely atrocious for years now. I wouldn't be surprised if they just sit in the house and scout players YouTube. Lol

    ReplyDelete
  52. Sinclairis oon per with ings to be honest, if you watch the game againstpPortugal there's nothingddifferent between him and Sterlin.

WWilling to make runs, will need like 12chances to score 1goal

    ReplyDelete
  53. There seems to be a huge group of fans who seem to think that ings has only played one game in his life...

    ReplyDelete
  54. Name 3 potential targets...

    ReplyDelete
  55. would be an epic signing. Dont know why Madrid are selling.

    Illramendi / Milner
    Can Henderson

    beasty triangle

    ReplyDelete
  56. Surely that is what scouts are their for ?

    ReplyDelete
  57. haha guess we value things differently.... a great accomplishment like that means nothing to u

    ReplyDelete
  58. and where is burnley?

    ReplyDelete
  59. unlike ings emre can light it up in the U21's..... Emre Can is a great midfielder and its unfair to blame him for the slip ups when he was playing out of position..... milner in no way imo should be starting ahead of Emre but sigh idk what BR will do but not holding my breath.... my ings arguement also stems from the fact that ings would most likely be 3rd or 4th choice striker.... if so why incur all cost or even get him when he is not a nailed on 1st choice or 2nd choice? why not just promote the youth given how much millions LFC spend in youth development.... i look at it from an economical point of view

    ReplyDelete
  60. yes, and you'll find that there are no potential strikers available of the 'stature' we require

    ReplyDelete
  61. are you sure you NOT a lfc scout ,the way you talk ?

    ReplyDelete
  62. I look at talent ,NOT colour !

    ReplyDelete
  63. He is right. Bacca, Vietto, Adriano, Mandzukic, have all been snapped up. Only Lacazette or Aubameyang seems to fit the bill.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I don't want to get too technical here but I think the middle is that bit between the two outside bits

    ReplyDelete
  65. voice of reason1:49 am, July 08, 2015

it was a huge accomplishment that any black person (like myself) would be proud of especially given the levels of racism individuals (like myself) are subject to in europe..... u can make out and twist my statement however u like it really doesn't matter to me

    ReplyDelete
  66. He's a f***ing idiot. With each move he blocks, he only allows more time to get older and older, closer and closer to retirement while he wastes his career on the bench or in the reserves.
