Anfield-bound? Rodgers drops massive hint that Liverpool will sign 'terrific' 50-goal striker

On Monday, reports claimed that Liverpool had reached an agreement to sign 'fantastic' Burnley striker Danny Ings at the end of the season, and Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has now dropped another huge hint that a deal is in the works.

According to The Mirror:

* Ings 'will join Liverpool' at the end of the season.

* Ings has allegedly 'chosen' Liverpool over Man City, Man United, and Real Sociedad.

* The Reds will pay up to £5m for the striker.

In an interview with TalkSport on Thursday, Rodgers was asked the following question:

"Are you still in interested in Danny Ings?"

Rodgers hesitated for a good ten seconds before answering, and then offered the following response:

"He's a terrific young player, Danny. There's no doubt he's done really well for Burnley. For us, there will be a number of options and possibilities that we will look at"

Rodgers could've denied interest (as he has done many times over the past three years when asked about specific players), but he praised Ings instead, and this usually means that Liverpool are interested.

As such, fans should probably get used to the idea of Ings in a red shirt next season.

I've made clear my reservations over the deal clear several times, so there's no point repeating myself. Instead, I'll look at the potential positives:

- In terms of scoring/creating goals - a striker's primary role - Ings is clearly an upgrade on Lambortelli. Stats:

* Bournemouth: 8 goals/3 assists in 29 apps (Goal every 3.6 games | Goal/assist every 2.6 games).

* Burnley: 42 goals/14 assists in 128 apps (Goal every 2.9 games | Goal/assist every 2.1 games).

* TOTALS: 50 goals/17 assists in 157 apps (Goal every 3.1 games | Goal/assist every 2.3 games).

* This season: 10 goals/4 assists in 35 apps (Goal every 3.5 games | Goal/assist every 2.5 games.

- Under different circumstances (i.e. no expiring contract), Ings' value would be inflated by the spurious British player 'tax', and he'd probably cost £15m+. As such, financially, the deal is a comparative steal.

- Even if Ings fails at Anfield, the worst case scenario is that the club will make its money back.

- Ings has huge self-confidence, which may help him overcome the dreaded small club mentality that seems to hamper so many Liverpool signings. In an interview last season with the Lancashire Telegraph, he noted:

“It’s really good [to play alongside Zaha, Sterling and Morrison] but to be honest, I look at them and think: ‘I want to do better than you and push myself further than you and become a better player’. And that’s what I’ll strive for every day.”

Sounds good to me. Ings' goal record in the Premier League is not that great so far, but to be fair, he's playing in a relegation team with comparatively inferior players. With the likes of Coutinho, Hendo, and Ibe feeding him next season, there's every possibility that his goal record will improve.

As Steven Gerrard said yesterday, though, Liverpool 'need to bring players who can score 25-30 goals', and that has to be the main tranfser priority this summer.

  1. You sound positively positive about the whole thing Jamie, as am I, additional marquee striker still required though agreed.

  2. I feel that Origi is going to be an instant hit so having him Ings and sturridge means that we need one big ready made forward to come into the team.

  3. Alright lads, if you could sign 1 player from the top 7 leagues (Eng, Port, Spain, Italy, France, Holland, Ukraine or Russia) in Europe who would you pick? (Messi AND Ronaldo are out)

  4. For the money I don't mind, he can't do any worse than Lambert.

  5. So long as Brenda doesn,t decide to play him in a stupid position like he has done with some of his signings.

  6. I believe the lad will do well if given the opportunity in a Liverpool team which obviously has better players than Burnley's,but you never know with Rodgers, he might warm the bench or play h @ lwb

  7. I would rather go for Demba Ba.

  8. And the other leagues?

  9. He's another one we should've signed about 3 times over

  10. Also, you left out Germany

  11. I'll take Suarez, thanks.

  12. England = Sanchez/Hazard/Rooney
    Germany = Alonso/Gotze/Reus
    Italy = Tevez/Pogba
    Spain = Suarez/Neymar/Koke/Griezmann

    not too sure about other leagues. If you want me to select only then Sanchez, Gotze, Tevez, Suarez

  14. I was eating my tea while reading the article when I got to the bit where you said you were going to look at the positives of his transfer.

    I am pleased to say that I am well on the road to a full recovery now and can only thank the paramedics who were very understanding.

  15. Hope you are not naming this English over hyped kiddo together with the German attacker who by 25 has a WC, couple of CL & over 60 German Caps; not to mention 10 WC goals & a WC Golden ball............

    Sometimes delusion exceeds it limit to keep silent. Can you explain why Thomas Moeller 'll leave Bayern to play under a nobody Brit in a mid table English club without CL football?

  16. Rogers can't attract big name players. Unfortunately he will be found out and I believe sacked by Xmas. We will struggle to find 25 goal strikers without cl football. If lacazette is offered lvg and man u with cl over br with el at Liverpool then there's only one winner .

    We blew our chance to secure cl football and I believe we will probably struggle to get top 4 again.

  18. I see no real downside to the Ings deal if you look at it in isolation. As JK says, if the deal didn't work out you'd get your money back at the very least.

    I think the worry is where is fits in our overall transfer strategy. We know Origi is coming in. We know Sturridge is staying, though we can't rely on his fitness. Most of us still agree that another 'top' striker is needed. I worry that if Ings comes in it gives the board an excuse not to push for a top striker if it is proving difficult, especially if we're having trouble shifting Mario, Lambert or Borini.

  19. Here is the thing, whilst I agree about BR even if we had a top manager, any player who has scored 25 goals a season on a regular basis is going to attract all the big clubs in Europe as well as a big transfer fee.

    So putting BR to one side, I still do not think we could sign somebody of that calibre.

  20. Hmmm.... next time try reading the other comments first.

  21. Hmmm... De Gea (Only reason why Utd are around honestly...top GK, better attitude than Courtois), Garay, Carvajal, Vidal, Gotze (Germany?), Lacazette, Clasie, Adriano. Of course they aren't the "best" players from each league, but all would solve most if not all of our problems.

  22. just replying to question raised on who we could sign from europe ,no im not naming him ,i am imagining./dreaming in the luxury of signing a player with balls & passion ,like Muller . .Never goin to happen of course.last time i checked i was entitled to my opinion.

  25. If this story is, or turns out to be true, then it means the following:

    1. BR is likely to keep his job for now
    2. FSG will not trust BR with a big transfer kitty after blowing it last year
    3. BR will by "improving" the squad by bargain basement deals - anything but a top £30-£50m player
    4. Any signings BR makes will definitely by OUTSTANDING,,!!!

    We're in for another depressing season, only for BR to be culled around Xmas time..

    EXTREMELY BLEAK OUTLOOK...

  26. thats what i think may happen too ,Sturridge is goin to be hit & miss again,Sterling even if he stays will add damn all more than a handful of goals,& to rid ourselves of mario ,borini ,lambert may not be that easy.we have plenty of players,in the role of strikers ,unfortunately we dont have any like Suarez to accomplish that task,so a Proven striker is required.

  28. Charlie Austin or Harry Kane would be a better option provided they don't choke when they don't the Reds shirt like many others before them, point in case, Charlie Adams and Andy Carroll among others

    ReplyDelete
  29. England - Aguero
    Portugal - Jackson Martinez
    Spain - Suarez :)
    Italy - Vidal
    France - Matuidi
    Holland - Davy Klaasen

    Ukraine - Konoplyanka
    Germany - Neuer
    Russia - Valbuena

    ReplyDelete
  30. Portugal - Jackson Martinez
    Spain - Varane
    Italy - Pogba
    France - Cavani
    Germany - Neuer
    England - Dwight Gayle (and then I'd loan him out to Siberia)

  31. Nerves !will be a common word this season if we fail to rid ourselves of the players we call strikers who have not worked out,& bring in a proven Striker,of course Ings could work out to be a shrewd buy with Origi blazing a trail ,but its a big gamble .A a season to forget with Stevie departing as well leaves a sour taste in the mouth over the summer.

  32. If Austin is valued by QPR in the £20m bracket, and Kane in the £35m+ bracket, I do not see either of these two arriving at Anfield any time soon.

  33. Germany - Müller
    Spain - Pedro
    Italy - Chiellini or Vidal
    France - Matuidi
    Portugal - Martinez

    Russia - Axel Witsel

  35. I know it's only my opinion but I think that sums up the present picture and maybe also our collective fears, to a tee.
    If the Ibe deal is completed post haste and subsequently the Club really ramps the 'hyperbole' through the roof then that could end up being our marquee signing, that's probably more a credit to Ibe and his potential than not but it won't satisfy the masses.

    ReplyDelete
  36. We'll have to "canvas" opinion on who that should be

    But then you can't have it both ways, if my outlook comes true.

    As to having no basis in fact... where do I begin? In all 3 seasons BR has been in charge, he has had a significantly better 2nd half than the first - FACT.

    So if he has a 4th bad start to a season, I think the majority of fans, even those who are backing BR at the moment, have agreed that would be the time to call it quits.

    **** RED MIST NOW DISSIPATING ***

    ReplyDelete
  45. Well if we going after Ings, and have turned down the opportunity to bid for the likes of Depay, a natural conclusion could be that BR now has to sell before he can buy...

  57. There's every chance that Ings won't score more goals if / when he signs for us . Putting it in simple terms surely we'll have a my her better chance of reaching a top 4 spot if we bring in players that are better than what the top use in the same position ? Ings is young I know but I'll be extremely surprised if he ever becomes as good as Costa, Aguero , Rooney,van persy,bony, Kane, Benteke , Giroud, Sturridge when fit . To be fair I would be a manager that would stay clear of bringing in English players anyway apart from the young players that come through our youth ranks . I can't remember the last English / British player we've bought in that's actually been brilliant . Sturridge last season when playing along side Saurez and hendersons turned out good but not great. Chelsea have just won the league with 1 British player in the team . Man city have 1 in there first strongest 11 too . Arsenal have 1 maybe 2 if Wiltshire and Ramsey when there fit but mostly only 1 of them will be on the pitch . As you start going down the table you start to notice there are more British players in those teams . If the English players were better then England would do a lot better in the word cup/ European championships . the top 4 managers in the premiership are all very good managers and I can tell you now apart from perhaps Gareth Bale and maybe Sterling the top 4 teams won't be bringing in any British players into there first 11 and that's why I don't believe for 2 seconds that Man city, Man U went in for Danny Ings . I remember 1 time Alex Ferguson saying Charkey Adams corner kick taking alone was worth 10 mill and rumours were going round he was interested in buying Adsms. At that moment I said to myself Ferguson is not in the slightest interested in signing Adams and he's probably just said that for mind games and to perhaps inflate Adams asking price. Dslglish frll for it though because we ended up buying him. How well did he do for us again ???.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I remember another young English striker that also scored 9/10 goals in his first season in the premiership and we ended up paying £35 mill for him. How well did that turn out ? If you ask me I don't think buying Danny Ings is the answer to our scoring problem. out of the players we've been linked with I think that really would fit in and do very well is Aubameyang

    ReplyDelete
  59. Another Borini/Aspas/Lambert/etc etc etc.
    He hasn't chosen LFC over City/Utd/Chelsea/Arsenal etc. He's chosen LFC because no other Premier League club is interested and his only other option is Championship. Jeez, it wouldn't surprise me if Moyes was faking interest just to get LFC on the hook.

  64. If what you suggest happens, which is a strong possibility and with DS out until Oct you only hope the board etc all think 'well who is going to lead the line in our first game?'. The answer is that with all the fit strikers we have (inc Ings) not one is good enough.

    Good question, and honestly, I have no idea... I think it comes from regional dialect... I think up North Tea Time is said as a rule, down south Dinner...

    ReplyDelete
  66. The question to ask ourselves is not whether £5 million pounds is a reasonable amount to risk, but whether we'd still consider him if he still had three years left on his contract.

    ReplyDelete
  67. That's also my concern. If we already had a title-winning squad with no gaping holes then I'd have no problem with Ings.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Which still makes him a great player...

    ReplyDelete
  69. I reckon it's probably to do with a time of day when a long time ago tea - the wet stuff would have been served, maybe on its own, probably with some posh nibbles of some kind, maybe scones, but now it's when most have their main meal, and probably now with a can of white lightening instead but we've just stuck with tea.

    ReplyDelete
  70. A definite worry, maybe Ings will become good enough but to give him all that weight from the get go would really just show that collectively the Club has learnt bu**er all from this season.

  71. Konoplyanka, Pogba, Verratti/Matuidi, Varane, Martinez, Wijnauldum, and I'm not sure about the Russian league. Maybe a good right-back. Will probably change my mind later. Oh, and German. Uh - Muller, seeing as Robben is injured.
