Next Transfer? Liverpool legend makes dramatic transfer claim about 'incredible' £35m attacker

For Liverpool fans who don't have their heads in the sand, it's been clear for months that Raheem Sterling is trying to engineer a way out of Anfield, and according to Reds legend Phil Thompson, the £35m-rated attacker's exit at the end of the season is all but guaranteed.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Thommo insisted that Sterling is 'not strong enough' to be LFC's 'main striker', and claimed that he will leave the club this summer:

“I think it will be very difficult for him [Sterling] to stay at Liverpool now. He’s shown all the signs that he’s ready and prepared to leave the club".

I want Liverpool to sell Sterling to the highest bidder this summer, so I genuinely hope Thommo is right about this.

Generally, young, inexperienced players shouldn't be put under intense pressure to carry the club on their backs, but that all went out the window when Sterling started believing his own gross overhype and rejected a £100k-a-week contract.

When a player intimates that he's worth £100k+ a week, it's incumbent on him to prove his value to the team, but in Sterling's case, that hasn't happened.

If the allegedly 'incredible' Sterling had stepped-up over the last few months and fired Liverpool into the Champions League, then he'd have a case for a larger salary, but he has spectacularly failed to do that.

Instead, he's gone AWOL, and his pitiful return of one goal in the last fourteen games is ample proof of that.

Sterling can talk-the-talk, but he can't walk-the-walk, and it's galling to think that he will probably continue to demand a grossly disproportionate salary despite playing an integral in Liverpool's wretched failure of a season.

It's a double-edged sword, though. If Liverpool sell Sterling for, say, £35m, and Rodgers stays at the club, will he spend that cash wisely?

History suggests the answer to that question is a resounding, skull-thudding NO, and after the abject waste of transfer funds over the last three years, FSG must surely be wary of handing Rodgers another huge chunk of cash.

That said, things have to change some time...right? Perhaps Rodgers will get it right this summer, and buy the players Liverpool need to make it back into the Champions League.

I certainly hope that's the case, but there's very little in Rodgers' LFC history to suggest that he's suddenly going to master the transfer market.

  1. Good piece, Big J.

Re: Sterling, I'm firmly in the, "don't let the door hit you on the way out...oh, it did? sorry, I had no idea that by me kicking it would have increased the momentum and velocity to the point where you didn't have enough time to egress safely" camp.

In other words, sling your hook 'Heem.

Good player, bad attitude, only avenue oopen to us is to cash in, imho.

  2. Well, he's taking Ibe with him on the way out. That's what happens when you give punk kids a little praise.

  3. AGREE. 100%. infact he destroyed our season as we would have got top 4 had he not made those comments. i hate sterling and he cant be forgiven for this. his creative output not good enough. we should sell for £40M to be honest because we can get far better and commited players.

    Alexander Lacazette - ST - 24 - £35M - Marquee
    Son Heung Min - LW - 22 - £15M
    Pedro Rodriguez - RW - £25M - Marquee
    Andrea Pirlo - DM - 35 - FREE - experience
    Aleks Kolarov - LB - 29 - FREE - experience
    Kevin Prince Boateng - CM - 28 - FREE - Experience
    Yevhen Konoplyanka - LW - 26 - FREE - Experience
    Kieran Trippier - RB - 24 - £5M - needed for right back

rodgers said we need 3 bonafied starters, so lets spend £35M to outbid other clubs for Lacazette and get Pedro and Son Heung Min and then get all theses other champions and winners for free??

  4. Good closing paragraphs, JK.

I worry that with Rodgers reporting to FSG it's kind of like the blind leading the blind.

Unproven, inexperienced manager spouting cliches and "death by football" philosophies to an inexperienced and unproven management structure? (Unproven in the world of "soccer".)

Bit worrying, but hey, we have no choice but to root for them and hope for the best.

SSHHH! the scouting teams at tottenham, chelsea and man U will be reading these comments and sign them all up while FSG scratch their heads and sign Leroy Fer and Bobby Zamora.

The best thing we can do is sign Pirlo asap. Could possibly attract more players.

  7. We need to buy first, and then sell him. If we must sell him..

    ReplyDelete
  8. I don't care what happens with him either way. If we sell, we should get a decent sum, if he stays we get to keep a bright young talent.

  9. Rodgers should have come down on Sterling like a ton of bricks - HE IS TOO WEAK TO LEAD LFC - Time and time again - *I thought my players were outstanding today "" utter crap

  12. looool the club are insane. well end up buying Shane Long and Mahrez and rubbish overatted english players like Ings. for me, the only truly proven english players are Rooney, Terry, Lampard, Gerrard, Scholes who all have a CL medal.... why did we bother signing Markovic, Lambert, Balotelli, Lallana, Lovren who have cost £84M and have contributed absolutely zero. Lallana has been shockingly poor. i already knew Markovic would be a flop and was not worth the £20m we paid, his stats at Benfica meant nothing 5 goals, look at Depay same price, world cup performer and 5 times Markovic goals.

  15. Not Pirlo mate a great player but 35 crossing to a faster more physical league for the first time no thanks.

  16. Sterling needs to go in my opinion as he seems to have got a bit to big for his boots. Balotelli, Borini, Lambert, Johnson, Allen, Aspas, Lucus, Enrique to name but a few are also in my opinion surplus to requirements. We should try and sign the likes of a GK maybe Begovic or Leno, CB Fabian Schar or Virgil Can Dijk would be a good addition at a reasonable price, we need a ball winner the likes of Naingollen (maybe a bit pricey) N'Zonzi, Witsel are all mobile and can get stuck in, Granit Xhaka and Youri Tielemans look the part as well and are only going to get better, we need a couple of wingers in my opinion to Yarmolenko, Konoplaynka, Heung-Min Son, Timo Werner, Kevin Volland, Patrick Hermann are all with our reach, then priority number one is a striker the obvious choice would be Higuian then Lacazette, Aubameyang, Rondon and Martinez are clear upgrades on what we have up front. Obviously Champions League will have a factor on who we sign and Rodgers lack of transfer tact will play a part but if (I hope) Klopp is appointed Germany is a league he knows and understands well and his reputation and LFC's especially in Germany could be the key to taking the club forward and Klopp has that ability.

  17. Great summary JK. Sterling may be technically gifted but that means nothing if it doesn't lead to positive contributions for the team. We've seen players like him in the past (Aaron Lennon), with lots of promise but equally big holes in their games. Sterling has shown little initiative to develop his game or push to contribute more positively to the squad (unlike Coutinho who's striking and passing has improved dramatically). If we can cash in for a finished product now is the time.

  21. we need the experience. we already have midfielders in Emre Can and Henderson but how will they become accomplished players without experience in the dressing room? we need experience, because when the going gets tough the young ones havent got the experience to pull you through. Gerrard has come up with the goals in the past 2 games and we need experience desperately. if not Pirlo, Milner for FREE, but i doubt Milner can lift the club like Pirlo will. Pirlo will stimulate people around hims performance, and with good players like Pirlo, Pedro, Kolarov, Konoplyanka, Lacazette and Son we can still win the Europa League and build from that the season after

    ReplyDelete
  22. Aaron Lennon, I think you just made the perfect comparison. Good shout.

  23. If we cannot convince a 20 year old to sign at £100k a week then what are players we will approach in the new season going to think of LFC?

Sterling is still young and was expected to run the show up top when he is not even a striker but do not worry, we have players like Ings and Milner who might consider us. Happy days ahead!

    ReplyDelete
  24. by truly proven english players i mean of this generation, not the likes of Gary Linekar etc.

Sterling is so overatted. the amount of 1v1s (against lugodgrets away, man united) and open goals (newcastle at home twice with his poor left, and again against QPR) he is nowhere near that 'GUY' and if he wanted to be a support player, which he is, i will be happy for him. but when hes just so greedy and dont pass but yet dont score or nothing it angers me so much. he not as good as he thinks and if LFC become a turtle to Sterling, not even Suarez, Sterling.... ill stop supporting.

were much bigger a club than that spoilt brat and we should sell straight away. weve got Ibe, Ojo, Kent, Canos and Wilson waiting in the wings

I wouldn't be so drastic, but I agree in the sense that he has far too much to learn before he can start holding the club to ransom... I have always been of the opinion that he is too selfish, has poor judgement/decision making skills, and apart from being fast, he lacks any real technical ability to put him in the 100k a week bracket.... But, he is only 20 yrs old, and is obviously being manipulated and isn't savvy enough to see the reality of his situation..... Too assume( on my part) that he believes his ambitions are greater than the clubs, and all his team mates is insulting... If he even thinks he could do what Gareth Bale has done and walk into a club like Real, or even Chelsea, he is in for a massive shock.... If he is too dull to realise he is in the best place for his development then by all means, go and sit on some one elses bench..... However.... I hope that isn't the case, and all this hads been blown well out of proportion by media morons who love nothing better than to stick the knife in at every possible opportunity....

    ReplyDelete
  31. At the wages he will be coming at? Plus he will not have the likes of Silva, Aguero, Toure and Company in the team.

Players like Milner will definitely not get us into the CL and he is not going to settle for less than what he is getting now and most likely will want higher wages.

Sterling is far from the finished article, so he will leave and then we will need to find a player as good cough cough 'Markovic' at £20m etc.

Milner will just be another case of hemorrhaging the wage bill.

Really, your going to chuck Ibe under the bus now just because some ar5e made it public knowledge that he is trying to negotiate with the club... You would have us all believe that Sterling and now Ibe are the only players to try and negotiate a better deal.....

    ReplyDelete
  39. And if we had Cristiano, Messi, and Muller we would have destroyed the league.

But they won't come here and neither will Mourinho, so to use Mourinho as an example is simply incorrect.

  52. I agree with the Lennon comparison. Yes Raheem has scored some stunning goals but his ability to scuff away the easiest of shots is every bit as stunning...and the more regular case.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I didn't claim you said he'd come here.

You made a comparison where you stated if we had a "manager like Mourinho" we'd be more successful, which is a direct response to Glen's point about the LFC strategy not working.

If you're not making the comparison to the hypothetical situation, what's the point in your response?

    ReplyDelete
  62. The signs were there from the very start of the season that we would not finish top 4.

We have been saying for how many years 'number 19' and unfortunately with Rodgers in charge it is not going to happen so why persist?

    ReplyDelete
  63. Haha! I agree mate he needs to learn to put the ball in the back of the net before he starts making stupid wage demands.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I will persist because I am a in love with this football club, even if Roy bloody Hodgson comes back, how can't you understand that?

Out of curiosity, when last season started, what did you say regarding where we will finish? And what did you say at Christmass time?

    ReplyDelete
  65. How I wish.....

    ReplyDelete
  66. But my point remains that if we had (past tense) a manager like Mourinho in charge then FSG would have been bragging about trophies already.

Why do I need to explain the point again?

    ReplyDelete
  67. Juts out of curiosity, who are these certain people? I have a feeling we haven't seen them for quite some time, which is a good thing...

    ReplyDelete
  68. I expected us to finish top 4 at least. At Christmas time I continuously said that our chances of top 4 were gone.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Last season, not current.

    ReplyDelete
  70. In Sterling's defence what we were asking him to do was to carry the te am which he did for brief periods in the season is just not fair. That's not allowing a player to develop, that's piling on the pressure. Like I've said before, our poor transfer dealings have indirectly contributed to this and if the influx of mediocrity continues talented rookies will.bargain for more than they deserve. Say Sterling stays, he'll still bear the responsibility of the creative burden. Ibe will follow, he knows that the club need him, he knows his worth (top 4 are interested) and as a Londoner his heart will be to go to London one day, how son no one knows.
The other point is that both fans & club have given every incentive to leave. BR with his public running commentary on contract dealings threw Sterling under the bus, and the bbc interview was inevitable. The tribalistic behaviour of lfc pundits to fans are bullying tactics. In short the club & its representatives could have been more professional In dealing with this situation.

    ReplyDelete
  71. The truth is the highest bid for RS will not be as high as trumped in the press. He hasn't the mentality of a consistent goal scorer. If he goes to a huge club he will be at most a squad player with the speed and strength to play a shift at wing when the marquee player needs a rest. He hasn't the footwork necessary to be considered clever. He hasn't the accuracy to be considered lethal. He hits the ground at the hint of contact. I truly believe top four managers see this and his stock isn't as high here as many think.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I definitely did not expect us to win the league start of 13/14 and was hoping we would.

I did agree with you back then that we would finish above UTD.

They have been utterly rubbish this season without any Euro hastle either. Just shows you how mediocre we have been and they will spend big again next season and I will not change my view that Rodgers has to go.

    ReplyDelete
  73. square pegs, round holes, Jamai-canada

    ReplyDelete
  74. You see? You start well, and it all comes back to we being mediocre and Rodgers out.. Not one single conversation without it.. Damn, mate..

    ReplyDelete
  75. Did BR not say we will end 2nd after the MC game ?

    ReplyDelete
  76. If DS remained healthy and scored 20+ as last season we would have been top 4 easily. He was as prolific as ever the few times he played. His glass legs aren't BR's fault. If 'if and buts were candy and nuts...'

    ReplyDelete
  77. And now rumours of Ibe rejecting a contract and where is the vitrol towards him?

IMO the likes of Sterling and Ibe are waiting to hear from FSG who our next manager will be.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Nothing to fear , Ings to the rescue !

    ReplyDelete
  79. BR has said many things.

    ReplyDelete
  80. EPL winners here we come!

    ReplyDelete
  81. He also had Suarez playing next to him. Brendan cannot stop bragging about Suarez leaving, remember?

    ReplyDelete
  82. Clearly you missed the prolific as ever part.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Funny this football world. Ibe rumours of rejecting a contract and not one word of him being a greedy money grabber.

    ReplyDelete
  84. So I guess that means my point remains that if we had (past tense) Ronaldo, Messi, and Muller, we would have destroyed the league.

    Glad we cleared that up.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Because most of us realize rumors are just that, and do not want to jump on the kid for little to no reason.

  86. Rohan Anderson4:53 pm, May 13, 2015

He normally puts in a good shift for Italy.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I rest my case

    ReplyDelete
  88. And it is also funny how Rodgers has shut his mouth about Sterling since the player went public. Not even LFC took action against Sterling for an interview that was not even arranged with the club.

Sterling is a kid ain't he? Only a year older than Sterling.

    Pot kettle black

    ReplyDelete
  89. I don't recall being critical of Sterling either. Waiting for the rest of the story to emerge before making a fool of myself.

    ReplyDelete
  90. 1. I don't think Rodgers really needed to say anything more after the interview since Sterling dug himself a hole he most likely can't get out of.

    2. That doesn't absolve Rodgers' incessant hyperbole prior to the interview. It was pretty annoying.

    3. How do we know that LFC didn't take action? Just because it's not in the press doesn't mean it didn't happen.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I blame the internet... or is that the same thing?

    ReplyDelete
  92. When Sturridge has played he has looked rather average. Many factors like the injuries but nowhere near what we saw from him last season.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Reply went to moderation.

I don't recall being critical of Sterling either.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I am not referring to players. I am referring to a manger capable of winning trophies.

    ReplyDelete
  95. And I am not referring to managers. I am referring to players capable of winning trophies.

    ReplyDelete
  96. My main concern has always been this:

What will happen with the money?

Suarez brought us in 75 million. 75. Million. We bought Lovren, Lallana, Markovic, and Moreno (roughly that much). Out of those players, almost all of them had been deemed atrocious at at least one point of the season, if not as of this moment.

So what will, say 30m get us? 40m? A Lovren and a Markovic again?

The problem relies within the way of how we use it. To be honest, I don't see the 30, 40 or even 50 (If we get extremely lucky) million being spent properly anyways. So we lose a potential star, who, like you yourself said Jaime, could just be 2004 Gerrard all over again, but turn up to stay here for the next 10 years and win us many trophies.

Why take a risk that severe? No, you can't call this a risk. Mostly because there will be no chance of a reward at the end. Only more mediocre highly inflated players coming in.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Was he ever 100%? I recall the first match he returned as a sub. On 12 minutes...goal.

    ReplyDelete
  98. "Scuff away," superb!

    ReplyDelete
  99. RS will not go for 40m. If a big club want him it will be as a squad player. His footwork is not clever. His shooting is inaccurate. He hits the turf at a hint of contact. He would be, at most, a sub for when someone like Sanchez needs a rest. He brings speed and strength and not much else. No smaller club will buy him as a premier striker because he has demonstrated he can't carry a team.

    ReplyDelete
  100. If you listen to the interview, Sterling didn't say anything out of line. He just did the interview. I'm not sure if that is a fineable offence. Nevertheless wouldn't it be in lfc's interest to meet such a public display of defiance head on to send a message. After all, BR has made everything else public about the contract dealings.

    ReplyDelete
  101. I know they say the truth will always out but let's be honest we are a long way off knowing the full detail of the Sterling saga and the fact is although he's not of a standard to waltz straight into Real et al he can certainly (in the right position and with the right support) be a pretty blooming good player.

Whatever the full SP is, it's all rather regrettable (imo) and the further worry is that with help from the gutter press we are about to repeat the whole sorry mess with Ibe.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Don't know wether is Brendan but sterling must have contributed., even cara witnessed it some time ago

    ReplyDelete
  103. The problem wasn't necessarily what Sterling said.

It was that he was talking about LFC in an interview that was supposedly not approved as LFC was supposedly not told it was even taking place.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Rooney and the like didn't come out of the womb with a champions league medal though did they!*
They all had to start somewhere and where better than LFC.
    *Gerrard was born a legend.

    ReplyDelete
  105. I agree with what you've said but I don't think lfc punished him for it. If they did, likelihood is they would have made it public to send a message.

    ReplyDelete
  106. But to suggest that Brendan is any different to most premier league managers is misleading.
How many managers post game comments include berating individual performances, none. How many in actual fact, praise their own team regardless of performance and attribute any blame to the opponent - all of them.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Sterling is no longer playing for us.,Just like f-Torres final days here. Anything close to 20M i will take it in a heartbeat!

    ReplyDelete
  108. I'm pretty sure he did reply to that along of the lines of it being a guess based on when FSG sacked KK. There were about 380 odd posts in between question and answer though so easily missed.
I think that's correct anyway, unless the two posts were unrelated - my brain was a bit frazzled by the end of that thread.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Apart from being in favour of BR staying on merit, I do wonder if Klopp did come in, could we be in for a bit of a disappointment - he may well get his foot through more doors only to be handicapped by lack of financial support from FSG.
Ultimately with transfers we don't really know who has played what part and to what extent and the perception that Klopp is bound to do better may not be correct.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Nobody knows the true extent of this saga but if Raheem leave the club at this point of his career it would be a big blow for Liverpool come of the back of Gerrard leaving the club. I say a big blow because Sterling would of being a great assist to Liverpool over the next couple of seasons. He has had a mixed season post world cup but it's understandable with the condition the club is in at the moment. I see Liverpool as a club sending out mixed messages in saying they want to compete, then buying players who are not as good as the player we have sold. Player like sterling Coutinho and Henderson wont get better unless the play with better players and that should be the clubs focus.

  111. It's about the money maybe, or lack of; to get moaniho we would have to pay moaniho wages, so even less to spend on players and moaniho doesn't like working to a budget. ;-)

  112. We will miss Sterling if he goes. Of course life and Liverpool will go on but I am certain we would regret him leaving and the money will not be adequate compensation for losing the player I think he will go on to be. OK?

  113. That's why they don't select him any more then?

  114. One player IMO put them above us - De Gea.

  115. They may have or you may be right that they didn't.

But there's really no way of knowing either way. Which is why i took exception to Logan's point.

  116. How many managers are there like Mourinho I can't think of any

    ReplyDelete
  117. As Logan has stated many times, he was an ardent supporter of Rodgers when we finished 2nd last year and now that we are in 5th he wants him gone.

  119. The season is not over yet anything could happen don't you read your bible

  120. A question/hypothetical situation out of left field:

Let's say FSG do decide to get rid of Rodgers.

Are we more likely to get a better manager finishing 5th (clinching Europa) or finishing 8th (missing Europa)?

    I'll be honest... I'm stumped.

  121. Certainly none as "special". Jose said so himself.

  122. Rodgers haven't got a clue. Seriously he's a very weak manager, van haal fined his players for being a minute late "minute late" for lunch and Sterling goes unpunished for what someone like fergie if /when he's what he is, (David Beckham era ) sterling may not play match until season finished

  123. This is the 21st Century what right would they have to tell him off or control what he does outside work?

    ReplyDelete
  124. Klopp seems to be the only realistic option and probably most think he's an upgrade on BR, my concern is nothing would change due to FSG applying the same transfer policy and finance levels.
If that was to be the case then Klopp coming in would just be change for the sake of it.
