Earlier this year, Italian newspaper Tutto Mercato claimed that Liverpool were in talks with Paraguayan club Cerro Porteño (CP) over the possibility of signing highly-rated starlet Sergio Diaz, who and it appears that the Reds are still intent on pressing ahead with the deal.
In January, Marca claimed that Liverpool put in a €10m offer for Diaz, and according to Italian newspaper Tutto Mercato today, the Reds are still monitoring Diaz, who recently represented Uruguay in South American Under 20 Championship.
Some info about Diaz:
* Debut at 15 for CP in the Paraguayan Primeira division.
* Scored 30 goals in one season for CP's U15 team.
* 8 goals in his debut season for CP.
* Scored 5 senior goals for CP before turning 16.
* Part of the same youth team as Juan Iturbe, another LFC target.
Diaz is often compared to Sergio Aguero, and in a recent radio interview, he explained:
"I am like Kun Agüero - I have the same characteristics, including speed and goals, and I scored 30 goals for for the U15 team"
Cerro Porteño U15 coach Diego Gavilan appears to agree with that assessment. After Diaz's promotion to the first team, he enthused:
"He [Diaz] is definitely like Agüero. He's strong, technical and his main objective is to find the goal. He scored 33 goals in less than six months, something that no young player has ever done here"
This all sounds very promising, but without European lineage, and appearances for the Paraguay national team, it's surely going to be incredibly difficult for Liverpool to secure a work-permit.
Additionally, €10m is a big fee for a 17-year old, and if Liverpool end up paying that, it will be the biggest transfer fee in Paraguayan history, which could conceivably put huge pressure on Diaz's shoulders.
If Diaz signs for Liverpool at the age of 17, then history suggests the following three-step process:
* Toil away in the Academy for 2-3 years.
* 4-5 loan spells at lower-league clubs.
* Leave LFC for a pittance and disappear into obscurity.
The better option is to go elsewhere and develop for a few years, and then join Liverpool between the ages of 20 and 24, an age range that seems to be particularly fruitful for young attacker players hoping to make the breakthrough7
It may all be moot though - according to the Porteno Chief Juan José Zapag, Diaz will 'stay at Cerro until he's 18 years old', and that is clearly the right thing to do.

It worries me when I hear Danny Murphy say Rodgers job is safe. Who? One top four finish in three years and a host of poor transfers. Why should his job Be safe? Because he got lucky when Dalglish brought in Suarez?
ReplyDeletewe need a player like Aguero. surely. if we can get Vietto he will be our 1st team Aguero and Sergio Diaz can learn from him in our academy and be new king to the throne. we should buy this kid if hes that good, usually when they that good from them countrys there gold.
ReplyDeletei'd really like us to purchase Christian Benteke for £30M. hes devasting. his PL record is fantastic. 48 goals/13 assists in 86 PL games for Villa is outstanding. hes a livewire and as scored against all the big teams in PL against Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man U, Man city, Spurs, Everton. and its all the time. not just now and again. Benteke is clearly unstoppable, especially in the big games against the top players and people dont like to face Villa because of him. his goal droughts can be put down to the team hes playing for. Suarez had many goal droughts at LFC but his ability, work rate and desire(similar attributes to Benteke) was never doubted. i honestly believe with Coutinho as a natural number 10, Benteke could be the striker to scared teams across a 38 game season to make us champions. hes a strong lad and his work rate make him so hard to play against. he sets off counters and is a real focal point. so much more to come from him as well, hes a top PL striker and only needs a title next to his name to cement that. with the purchase of 2 world class wingers, and 2 full backs, with a striker like Benteke we will coast to the title. we cant just buy one striker though, we should buy Vietto as well. 20 goals/13 assists fast, work rate and pressing, and always working the lines with movement, peferct for the LFC play. Coutinho with the right players around him will become the real world class player he is and could have a season as good as Ronaldinho
Sterling has to be sold this summer £40M, borini £10M
buy
Christian Benteke - £25M - ST - 24
Memphis Depay - £25M - LW - 21
Pedro Rodriguez - £25M - RW - 28 (MARQUEE)
Luciano Vietto - £13M - ST - 21
Geofrrey Kondogbia - £15M - DM - 22
Serge Aurier - £10M - RB - 24
total: £113M
if we have to raise money, im sorry but players like Allen and Lallana will have to be sold for World class players like Pedro and Kondogbia. they cost us £40M and have offered nothing but depth, and if the club are not going to splash the money for these players then the ones who have failed will have to be sold to make way.
-----------------------------------Mingolet
Aurier------------------Skrtel------------Sakho------------Moreno
-------------------Hendo---------------------Kondogbia
Pedro---------------------------Coutinho-------------------Depay
-----------------------------------Benteke
Problem is at the price they'd want for Benteke he'd have to be our main striker of the window and does he really suit our system?
ReplyDeleteA hard worker maybe but does he make the required runs in behind opposition defences, because that's what Coutinho needs to plays is little threaded through balls and I guess Hendo will be the man looking to punt those Gerrard-esque Hollywood jobs up field and Benteke would need to be on is bike looking for them in advance.
You sound like you've seen more of him than I have so maybe you'll tell me he does fit the bill. Great goal stats agreed but we don't need another Dodecahedron to try an accommodate into our...
Hot and spicy
ReplyDeleteThey have offered him a new deal but i needed to check everyones reaction priceless they all forgot about the plane message even.
Benteke is a prime example of proving that managers can change the way a player plays, and not only players, but even teams, like AVL right now.
ReplyDeleteAnd then it brings up the question; why can't Rodgers do that with a side that has better quality?
Bringing up yet another question: why is Rodgers staying next season?
So many questions, but in the end it always comes down to one thing. Rodgers out.
Benteke is as used injuries as Sturridge.why spend that much on someone to keep Sturridge company on physio table.makes no sense regardless of how good he is.
ReplyDeleteBenteke
ReplyDeleteFirst 21 games this season 3 goals
Last 9 games 12 goals .
Far to erratic to pay 30m
Hadn't realised that, crazy how much he'll likely sell for then, just hopefully not to us.
ReplyDeleteThought it was KK who signed Suarez, it was around when he started, was it a leaving present from Woy then?
ReplyDeleteUndoubtedly talented but injury prone & since day 1 of arriving at Villa made it very clear he wants to go to Arsenal.
ReplyDeleteHe'll fit right in at Arsenal then, specially if his injuries usually occur from around xmas onwards.
ReplyDeleteStill double the tally of our best scorer for the whole of this season, and he surpassed our leading scorer in only 30 games due to his injuries.
ReplyDeleteWould he be likely to get that amount of goals for us though, in the systems/style of play we favour or is he more a target man? Genuine enquiry, I really don't know too much about Benteke, accept he can finish annoyingly well.
ReplyDeletewhat about the work permit?
ReplyDeleteDon't know either but he sure looks worth a punt.
ReplyDeleteI have no worries for next season because we can sign a brand new Aguero who is only 17 year-old and he is gonna be PL highest goalscorer. Okay, now somebody please wake me up!
ReplyDeleteThen Why Daliglish didn't use Suarez and finish second?
ReplyDeleteUnbelievable
I'm hoping Origi is our punt that pays off next season.
ReplyDeleteSuppose it depends a lot on if we sell Balo and Lambert and how much we get if we can afford two punts.
How many goals did Lallana , Lambert and Borini score last year ?
ReplyDeleteand how many has Suarez scored this year .
Its all about consistency !
Stu! O brother where art thou...
ReplyDeleteAgreed Napoli are keen to retain him.
ReplyDeleteHowever it seems Rafa wants to be close to his family in Liverpool and hence will more than likely turn them down.
I believe Rafa is a sure bet for the City hot seat but is really hoping to receive a call from Anfield - which alas will NEVER come while FSG are in charge.
9,13,7 respectively 13/14 season, however there is a correlation to minutes played to goals, but I do agree it is about consistency.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very good point. Lallana and Lambert used to score and assist more and consistently at Southampton. Balotelli scored 30 goals for Milan in the last two seasons. Now they play under Rodgers and all of the sudden they're all crap?
ReplyDeleteLovren was outstanding for the Saints last year and under Rodgers he's been terrible. Is it the players or the manager?
Saurez was terrible last season too
ReplyDeleteOranges and apples!
ReplyDeleteI'll go with that! I've not slept since about a heck of a long time ago and I feel your representing me with your name tag being Seriously P'ssed , no fruit though, I'm thinking of heading over the road, farmhouse breakfast and a pint for a fiver.
ReplyDeleteSIAVASH SIAVESH wake up, you missed the open top bus tour.
ReplyDeleteWoah there ,I'm not that slammered! I retract going with your edited version, oranges and apples were tasty on their own ;-)
ReplyDeleteSell Sterling and go for the real Sergio Aguero?
ReplyDeleteu r a joke..Kenny brought Saurez and Carrol same time when we sold Torres...Brenden Rodgers had a one season when we had no presure, I meant no european Football, we could have won league if we had different manager who can take presure when its matter for e.g when we lost chelsea where we just need a draw instead of going for a win, then the manner of a draw against Palace....where the league decided..u see mourino park the bus against arsenal beacuse ge know draw is enoughf..All brende Transfare is a joke except Coutinho..Sorry mate i dont agree with u
ReplyDeleteWeve spent more than Arsenal and Man United in the last three years so how exactly is money a factor? The problem is that under Rodgers, of the 200+ million weve spent, only about ten percent of that was on players that even made a little bit of an impact.
ReplyDeleteIt's not about Dalglish its about Rodgers only "achievement" having nothing to do with his great skills or eye for talent. Last years title run was done with zeto contribution by any of the players brought in by Rodgers the summer before and hardly any contribution by anyone he brought in bar Mignolet and Allen
ReplyDeleteYou are taking this the wrong way. In no way am I trying to imply Liverpool sign Sherwood hahaha, but it's just to state a point. I don't know how he has equaled and surpassed that though. If last season is an argument, it's not a very good one. If anyone had an impact on the way Liverpool played it was Suarez.
ReplyDeleteI don't know why, but I feel as if most of the squad has died down and don't feel like playing much anymore. They don't have a reason, or an evident spark shown. This is partly the players's fault as well, but the manager should be the first to blame. He should act as the leader next to the captain, but in most of our games this season it's really clear about the team's intent to win.
Besides that; tactical issues, transfer woes, and nothing won.
I just realized, but think about it. What is one significant thing BR has done so far to move the club forward?
Let it sink, because the answer is simple.
Kenny admitted it was all sorted before he had any say. This site has shown the quote.
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't Kenny just done when Kenny was here. He said so himself.
ReplyDeleteNot true. United have spent around 70-80 million more in that period. Arsenal spent about ten million less than we did but had a better team at the beginning of it and recruited Ozil and Sanchez in that time. Ozil obviously costing around twenty million more than Rodgers most expensive signing. So yeah money IS a factor.
ReplyDeleteSorry how many goals did Sturridge score? Did Continuous not play?
ReplyDeleteI would be curious how he does and how he would play with more money. He gets dumped by clubs after saving them from getting relegated cause of a lack of goals and style. He made Stoke into a fortress. I don't personally want him at liverpool but a strong side with a good financial layout could benefit from hiring him.
ReplyDeleteNo striker. This is problem number 1. Maybe Sturridge should go to a warmer clime. If we had had a 20 goal striker this season just think where we would be. We have been manufacturing wins without a striker all season but all teams know we have no threat up front if Studge doesn't play.
ReplyDeleteHow many games did Sturridge play and Coutinho wasnt nearly as prolific as this year. But even we include them, thats four players of all the players hes bought.
ReplyDeleteNobody forced Rodgers to spend 26 million on two useless CB and 15 million on Alberto and Aspas.
ReplyDeleteIt shows were we are in the market, taking punts on relatively cheap players on low wages. Because as well as money spent we also have a much lower wage bill than those teams mentioned.course actually forming down this year as United and Arsenal's had risen.
ReplyDeleteHow many games did Suarez play? Does it matter when they are the two top scorer in the league and have shed loaf's of assists between them as well as Sturridge actually scoring more decisive goals over the campaign. Coutinho may not have been scoring as much but his all round play at times created space for those ahead of him. He was vital in many games.
ReplyDeleteI am not arguing our recruitment has not been bad but I think leaving those players out was either disingenuous or daft.
Ok. Daft it is 😄 the point was that it wasnt Rodgers team and that holds up.
ReplyDeleteNot sure what you're saying here but the players Rodgers has bought, largely did nothing to improve us. It was his choice to not do as Wenger did and therefore his responssibility.
ReplyDeleteWell that isn't true as Sturridge and Coutinho made us better instantly. Sakho is arguably our best defender. Lots haven't worked out and others we are not sure about yet but lots are of the lower end market and ao more risky and the more expensive ones are still not nearly as expensive as the expensive players in those other teams who haven't found it easy finding their feet themselves (Ozil and Di Maria).
ReplyDeleteWas it his choice to lose out on Willian, Costa and Sanchez? Is it his choice how much we offer in wages? I know it is fashionable to blame it all on Rodgers but it is far too simplistic.
Thats why I said largely. Plus Sturridge did have a fantastic goals to games ratio but thats no good if he only plays three months of a season. Sakho looked improved this season but being our best defender doesn't say much at the moment does it? He told us we missed out on Willian and Costa for lack of CL football. We had that this year and who does he sign? Lalana, Markovic and Balotelli. Sure Sánchez didn't want to come but then Balotelli is the best alternative he can come up with?
ReplyDeleteWe are talking about last season though and he played a good proportion of the games.
ReplyDeleteAs for Sakho he was good last season but people took time to be convinced. For some reason he got blamed when Mingled went through a terrible patch and others were making mistakes.
The rest I would largely agree but United showed that money talks when not in CL. Had the right offers been placed we could have gotten those players. Willian especially but the people or person doing the deal didn't get it sown up quickly like they should have. So there is incompetence from other members of the club as well.as an inability or reluctance to offer big wages. That's all I am saying. Rodgers clearly didn't want Mario and still doesn't. He was bought none the less. This indicates that his involvement isn't as strong as people think or that he himself has suggested.
Its not people who suggest it. It was Rodgers himself who said he was only willing to come to LFC if he had the final word on players when he joined us.
ReplyDeleteBecause he had one bad injury?
ReplyDeleteNothing to do with playing under a coach in Paul lambert who makes mourinho look like the most attacking coach in the world.
ReplyDeleteI think that is two quotes that you are mixing together mate. But like I say despite what others and he himslef says the actions and further quotes contradict that notion.
ReplyDeleteWell alot of older fans are old school and don't care much for social media which largely is dismissed anyway. It was a statement by disgruntled fans and I for one support them. I wish I did it.
ReplyDeleteMan United supporters made a dramatic statement and I'd say they have made a drastic improvement since that banner flew above old Trafford. Maybe it'll work the same way for us and the fsg can finally listen to what the fans actually have to say.
Liverpool Football Club should be employing winners not unproven untested managers from mid table teams . Liverpool Football Club should be winning trophies and striving to be the best. When did mediocrity be allowed to be continually associated with our great club.
ReplyDeleteHave u people forgotten what this club stands for.
First is First, Second is nowhere.
Oh did u know all those clubs u have mentioned have better players ,better players and have Won more trophies in the last ten years alone.
This same allowance is the reason we keep sinking away from relevance.
People like you have become so comfortable with mediocrity and call it "stability".
I don't have any social media accounts myself (unless you count the gmail I used to make this).
ReplyDeleteYou say Utd supporters made a dramatic statement, but it was completely opposite of the one they wanted to make. I'm not a huge BR fan myself right now, but the whole banner thing makes us look like pity seeking crybabies. There are tons of other ways they could've shown their discontent. But they chose the classless way possible short of assassinating him.
How was it the opposite,sir?
ReplyDeleteThey wanted their club to be performing better is that not what we want?
And what would have been a more classy way pray do tell?
When the scum did it they were below us in the standings. And had lost home and away to us. Well honestly the shoe is on the other foot this time. Now we're below them in the standings and u know the rest.
ReplyDeleteAfter that banner was flown over old Trafford well no matter how "classless " it was it did the trick.
Now they are talking about challenging for the title next season. Sometimes "classless" is what is needed to bring change.
25 years of hurt, it has to end!!!!!!!
It's not official I think his agent says he might sign but he hasn't as of yet.
ReplyDeleteMr Brendan muSt go
ReplyDeleteWell we've seen stranger goals given. Anyone remember that beach ball goal?
ReplyDeleteSo is liverpool under rodgers.
ReplyDeleteChange isn't needed, especially to Rafa. Bottomline fans are there to support the team through good and bad times. They don't decide who to hire and when to fire someone. I hope someone sits outside your job and tells people you need to be fired. Maybe them you might understand how awful of a thing it is.
ReplyDeleteIf the costumers are not satisfied then I better damn well be fired. Without fans football is nothing and if the fans aren't happy change is needed.what ever u say in the last 3 years rodgers has won nothing while benitez has 3 trophies and is on course to win the Europa league this season if all goes well. #Rafa in
ReplyDeleteDid you really thinking like that last year? Even before the chealsea games kicked off? I doubt it.........
ReplyDeleteWho's better in your opinion Kenny or Rodgers?
ReplyDeleteYou have a piss poor memory and need to learn patience.
ReplyDeleteU are defeatist who's forgotten that the point of playing football is to actually win things.
ReplyDeleteI have a good enough memory
To remember that FIRST IS FIRST, SECOND IS NOTHING.
piss off mate and go support the spuds with all your f^kn patience.
Thanks for proving my point. The spuds have shown ZERO PATIENCE. They have created a revolving door of managers and regressed because of it. But stay classy, not a defeatist just actually know facts and I am realistic. I know and understand the game is to win, thanks for pointing it out captain obvious
ReplyDeleteDalglish obviously. Although I still believe he was the wrong choice the second time around and putting Commoli next to him was an even worse decision
ReplyDeleteOr ud rather I had picked West or Stoke ham? I would rather get in benitez or any manager with an impressive cv and give him all the patience in the world.people like u and ur patience bull$hit is the reason we haven't been able to win the league in a quarter of a century or even been a force in Europe since the last years of rafa. I'd actually want to watch this team win the league before I die u pr!ck. Sponsors don't care about classy they care about winners. I'd like to be associated with winners so p!ss off.
ReplyDelete
