Done Deal: 'Unbelievable' midfield star signs £26m deal with Liverpool. Rodgers confirms in press conference

After months of protracted negotiations, Liverpool's 'unbelievable' captain-elect Jordan Henderson has joined Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge in signing a new contract, something that apparently remains beneath raging mercenary Raheem Sterling.

According to the official Liverpool FC website:

"Liverpool vice-captain Jordan Henderson [Cost: £20m] today signed a new, long-term contract with the club"

The alleged details of the deal:

* 5-year contract
* £100k-a-week (£26m over 5 years)

Brendan Rodgers' reaction:

"It's great news that he [Henderson] is going to spend the best part of his career development here at Liverpool. He is a big part of the plan going forward, so I'm delighted for the club and that he can continue with his development"

Hendo's reaction:

"There was no doubt where my future was going to be and it was just a matter of time for my agent and the club to sort it out. For me, it was purely based on concentrating on my football and then hopefully it would get sorted out."

£26m over five years is a ludicrous amount of money, and Henderson is not (IMO) worth that such a princely sum. However, I'd rather see that kind of money go to Henderson over Sterling, who doesn't deserve that kind of salary.

If the figures are correct, how can Liverpool now justify paying Sterling more than Henderson, who is:

* Older and more experienced that Sterling.
* Clearly more important to the team (21 goals/assists this season)
* The club's vice-captain, and probably future captain.
* Not a mercenary who holds the club to ransom.

It'll be a travesty if Liverpool pay Sterling more; it will probably cause discontent in the ranks, and if the Reds give in, it will show that Sterling really is bigger than the club, which is an intolerably nauseating prospect.

  1. But it doesn't justify with what Coutinho get comparing skill, technically, creatively and he's no game changer either and Skrtel deserve the captaincy more than him. Our midfield been overrun most of the time yet this mediocre player get 100k? Big club, Big wages but mediocre players

  2. Henderson in the league - goals 6 assists 8
Coutinho in the league - goals 4 assists 4

I'd say Henderson has changed more games this season judging on those stats, and although Couts is very technically gifted, I think you underestimate Hendo's importance to the side.

  3. How can you say he's not worth it... Compared to some, I'd say we just got a bargain.... Did anyone really doubt he would sign?...I know I never.... Look forward to more fruitful years ahead. Good man...

PS, I'm not appluading the signing itself, more that he sees LFC as the better option over potentially Chelsea and or City... He sees a future at LFC, even on less than the other 2 would have paid him.

  4. People always see flair as worth more... I've seen Hendo make some pretty special passes this season....

  5. I'm not to sure he's worth the 100k a week he's not a top draw player but he's a good worker with a good future, sterling on the other hand is looking for a way out, if he doesn't sign a new contract before the summer we need to get rid quick because he can buy out the rest of his contract and leave for absolutely nothing

  6. I think, it's a very good deal for LFC. Jordan is young & his best 4-6 years are coming. Besides, he is English (which itself in worth 35K/week extra!!).

Also, I don't think, unless he shows some miraculous improvement, I don't think, there 'll be many team to pay 150K/week for his service; which means; we 'll not have to suffer Sterling like black mail (I don't think, for 10-20K increase; he is going to leave the club he is likely to lead).

Pay slightly over the worth (to me it should have been over 85K in current context) - keep risk free for 4-5 years; not bad business.

  7. Happy for Henderson after hanging in their when Liverpool tried to offload him to Fulham

  8. It seems like good business to me too considering that Hendo is a committed, hard-working player entering what should be the best years of his career. He will be the club captain for the foreseeable future and his contract reflects this extra responsibility. what's Luke Shaw on at United? £120,000 per week? So yeah, it's good business.

  9. Yeah, Rodgers wanted to exchange him for Dempsey :-o

  10. Well, weeks ago Henderson ssaid that he put his contract talks on hold until the end of the season.

I think this pretty much confirms that Sterling is leaving.

  11. Which, as it turns out, could be one of the best things that ever happened to him, as it lit a fire under his ass.

  12. Honest question, have you ever played football at all?

  13. Exactly, what's not to like.

  14. Some people actually believed he wanted to get rid of him but it was just a cunning plan all along.

  15. This is good news and luckily, this was done without much trouble. 100 k is not bad considering Stevie and hopefully GJ are exiting. That would make Sturridge our highest paid player with 150 k I think but still not bad.

  17. Should the captain of such a huge club be payed more?

  18. Lucky him. Paul Pogba's new contract nets the Frenchman 70,000 pounds a week, according to news reports.

  19. Unbelievable midfield star? You've got to be joking,Henderson has only started being all right half of last season and this season, and he's Ok at best.Unfortunetly Liverpool don't have a worthy person to be captain so Henderson got the job.Henderson is only a bit player and will always be.LFC need quality midfielders, learning to be a footballer.Henderson is a marathon runner learning to be a footballer.

  21. He's being facetious

  22. It is now public knowledge that Sterling's agent has left his current company and is in the process of setting himself up in his own right.

Therefore he would miss out on his commission, if Sterling was to sign up now.

He's still a fool, his advice has made Sterling look like a tool and most Liverpool fans I know wouldn't lose any sleep if we sold him.

  23. I feel similarly about Lazar, give the guy running spikes because he's no footballer.

    ReplyDelete
  24. He's definitely worth that. He's one of our most important players. Granted it's an obscene amount of money, but just look at what players like Luke Shaw are on for god sake! I'm delighted we've got his contract sorted!

  25. Off the subject, If Mr BR is going to go into the transfer market AGAIN I recon a player who is going to be one of the best strikers is Rudy G of Blackburn ? Only seen him a couple of times but he seems to have everything to his game, He can head a ball really well can dribble and he can shoot and should go for a good price and would be better than a couple of his last signings.

  26. So glad he has shown LOYALTY - now I support his claim for captaincy

    ReplyDelete
  27. Yeah, our manager is a genius!

    ReplyDelete
  28. No question that he hasn't got the best out of our players this season.

  29. Gestede is 26 so not like he is a young player, watched him a play quite a few times for Cardiff and he is nothing special, small purple patch at the moment but going by past it wont continue.

  30. Totally correct, i tried to explain this to Mr Chin the other day but alas it seems i failed.

  31. I'm delighted with the news, a player who gives his all every game for the club. Henderson is improving year on year and some of his passing is superb.

Im sure Skrtle and Ibe will follow suit and sign soon, Sterling is still 50/50 in my option and it depends on what clubs come calling and the money they offer. Flanagan is another im not sure if he will sign, Flanno loves the club but i'm not sure he we get the reassurances about playing time he needs to commit. After having so long out he will be eager to play and wont want to be sat on the bench. Hope we send Manquillo back from his loan to help convince Jon to sign a new deal.

  32. I would wait and see on that 1 what Hendo does has nothing to do with Sterling.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think they should ask Sterling to justify why they should pay him more than Henderson, see what he comes up with?

  34. middle of the road british stodge.

  35. theres no official word on the amount Sterling has been offered. It's all media talk circulating and regurgitating.

  36. Ok here is my 2 pence worth. Lets image im Sterling. Im at liverpool last summer and we bought a Italian midfielder on a wage of 100k-140 k reportedly. Lambert on around 80k, both players can`t get a game and i`m asking to do their job.
We have Glen Johnson on about 120k who was in the top 3 worse players last season who has only played a few games this season.
Does this really say alot about the club wage structer and liverpool wasted 6 months not giving me another contract whenm im only on 35k a week and we came 2nd contributing significantly on us coming 2nd.
Then my manager is trying to bully me into signing making too much unnecessary comments about my contracts in my terms being unprofessional. Why don`t I have the right to wait till summer. Yes 100k is a good offer is it is basic pay however the first offer of 70k was taking the micky and my agent has told me certain teams are willing to pay me 140 k a week with champions league and more chances of winning trophies.
Liverpool can also sell me and make money if I go, its not as if im not a london Q.P.R lad. Either way everyone wins and I have paid and contributed to Liverpool football club at my time here.

    Give the guy a break

  37. Hendo has been very good this year, so deserves his new contract.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think a lot of people forget that Hendo has been on £65k per week since he signed 4 years ago. Sterling only went up to £35k last season.

Sterling's problem is that he's been a total tool in handing his reputation, and has allowed his agent to make him look bad instead of slapping him down or changing him. Now no matter what he does people will call him mercenary like Ashley Cole was despite being the best full back in the league at the time

Someone actually called him scum earlier. What exactly has he done to deserve that?

  39. this is all a smoke screen for when br give his first son joe allen £150,000 a week and claim tryless running being bounce of the ball, found his way to the pently area and suffer a nose bleed.over 90% pass rate going sideways and backwards . 1000% worth £150,000 . never let facts get in the way of a good story (mediocre rule under br and pie in the sky "no cups to support the fee".

  40. Allen is on 40k a week and has earned his money in my opinion
