Game Over: Liverpool star flying out for transfer talks within 48-hours

The End is Nigh! 'Outstanding' Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson recently admitted that he's currently holding 'talks' with overseas clubs about a move abroad this summer, and new reports suggest that he is actively taking steps to find a new club for next season.

When asked today about his future on Monday, Johnson told The Guardian:

"There are talks. It would be great for the kids to go abroad but I am not thinking about yet as we have two months left here and I’ll think about it after that. We will have to wait and see.”

According to The Mirror today:

* Johnson is flying to Italy to hold talks with Roma.
* He is expected in the country 'within the next 48 hours'.

Johnson was linked with Roma in November, and at the time, the Daily Mail claimed:

* Roma are 'confident' of signing Johnson.
* The Serie A club believe Johnson has 'more to offer' than Ashley Cole.
* Roma are 'happy' to pay Johnson's £120k-a week (£6.2m per year) wages.

If this is true, then Johnson's trip to Italy makes perfect sense. He's basically following the money, and if Liverpool won't pay him £120k-a-week, then he'll sign for whatever club is willing to meet his demands. That's his right, of course, but it's clear that Johnson has an inflated sense of his own worth.

Liverpool legend John Aldridge insists that a transfer is 'probably best for all parties', in his column for the Liverpool Echo this week, he mused:

"Johnson is one of Liverpool’s highest earners and...that is a problem. Liverpool won’t want to keep paying him [£120k-a-week/£6m-a-year], and Johnson won’t want to take a pay cut, especially knowing his game time could be limited".

As always, the key question is this: if Johnson leaves, will it make any significant difference to Liverpool's forward progress? The answer (IMO) is resoundingly NO, so the club should do everything it can facilitate a move away this summer.

  1. For once I agree with you. He has been poor and at times a distinct liability. If he put the effort in he would be worth keeping but he is looking to edge out for money. We don't need that kind of mercenary at the club. I will wish him well and adieu. ..

  2. Roma really haven't learned have they ? Great news, won't be missed. 3 years since he was worthy of a 1st team place and he was NEVER a real defender

  3. Couldn't agree more am struggling to remember last time he had a good game for us

  4. He is not a first choice for Liverpool and is being asked to take a 50% pay cut. i don;t blame him if he can do better elsewhere, It is probably time for him to go but he has been a Liverpool player and deserves to go without recriminations YNWA

  5. Bud with all due respect you can't honestly be comparing Dani Alves to Glen Johnson. Johnson isn't fit to wipe Alves arse. Dani Alves has been one of the true great fullbacks of our generation. Glen Johnson, well, hasn't...

  6. It's not often we disagree Stu but I can't wait to see the back of Johnson and quite frankly think he should pay us half his wages back as he has been nothing short of a hindrance for at least the last 3 years. His nonchalant, lackadaisical performances have caused me many a stressful evening and cost our beloved club plenty points over the years.
Bye Glen, don't let the door hit you on the arse on the way out and let us never mention his name again

  7. Jaimie we disagree on many things but I think one thing we agree on is Aliens. Everytime you post game over I see the Hicks scene that you have posted in the past. All this was, to me, more important than Johnson's future.

  10. Alves and Johnson have one thing in common at this point of time i dont want either of them at Liverpool.

  11. Yes I realise that, but Alves' time is coming to a close- he would obviously be an upgrade, but his defensive abilities never were that good, which didn't matter at Barca that much but matters a lot to us. We should have bought him when Rafa wanted him but didn't, and now he's past his sell by date for me, even going forward he has dropped a rung or two which is why they are willing to sell...

  12. If the story is true then a great football team are offering him a ton of money to go and play professional football in Rome. You don't have to be some kind of soulless mercenary to take up something like that, you just have to be a normal human being. It would also mean that he has a fairly accurate sense of his own worth because it's what he would actually get paid. I'd suggest that the person who has an inaccurate view of the situation is you.

  13. Sorry, but it's clear you have limited knowledge about economics. You are worth what the market is willing to pay for you. If he is holding out for 120K, and that's what Roma are willing to pay for him, then his sense of own worth is not inflated at all.

  14. Good news is that Flanagan is back in training and hopefully we see him making thunderous tackles again this season. Can still picture the bone crunching tackle he made on Soldado last season, did not know what hit him and fact is we need some Scousers in the starting eleven!

As for Johnson, I still cannot understand why Rodgers has been so keen to keep him? Luckily FSG have not bowed down to his demands so good on them.

Also read quite a good article on Anfield Index. It is called

"2 Sides to Brendan: Has He Done Enough?"

Just copy and paste the heading and it should take you to the link on google etc.

  17. Yes I have some bad memories of the way he has played at times but he did not decide his transfer fee his wages or when he played and I doubt he deliberately played badly.

I won't mourn his leaving but I won't call him mercenary etc either ;-)

  18. I'm still in a shock as i can't see why Roma are after him.what is he actually good at? Johnson has been a defensive disaster for the past five years or so..to be honest, i expected teams from league two / one to take him off us

  19. Yea you're probably right. Still a big Dani Alves fan though

  20. I've never inferred he was a mercenary, just rubbish
