Replace Gerrard? 'Exceptional' £77m-star hailed by Owen/Carra 'will' leave and sign for 'one of six clubs'. LFC?

Last month, Steven Gerrard confirmed that he is leaving Liverpool at the end of the season, which means that Brendan Rodgers (should he stay in the job) now has the gargantuan task of finding someone to fill the void. Ex-Red Michael Owen recently urged the Reds to sign Juventus star Paul Pogba to replace Gerrard, and it appears that the ex-Manchester United midfielder will definitely be available this summer.

When asked this week about Pogba's future, Mino Raiola told reporters:

"Pogba could go to one of six teams. When the right moment arrives this summer we will take it but...if he goes, he will break Ronaldo's transfer record."

Could Liverpool be one of the six clubs? Pogba was linked with Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester United over the summer, but at the time, the 21-year old made it clear he had no interest in returning to the Premier League:

"I am very happy to play for Juve. The future does not concern me, I live in the present. I am not thinking of the contract and my goal is to continue to do well in the field."

Discussing Gerrard in a recent interview, Owen told BT Sport:

"The ideal replacement [for Gerrard] is someone like Paul Pogba at Juventus. He's an exceptional talent who can drive on in that central midfield role"

Reds legend Jamie Carragher is also a fan of Pogba, and in a recent column, he enthused:

"Pogba looks ideally suited to the Premier League. He would be expensive, but I would love to see another midfield powerhouse in our league"

Manchester United are reportedly set to make a £77m bid for Pogba this summer, which is an utterly ridiculous price, and almost certainly rules Liverpool out of any potential deal.

That said, the reality is that Liverpool are going to have to splash the cash to bring in a player who's capable of having a Gerrard-like impact on the team. The Reds can't get away with trying to do it on the cheap, and at the age of 21, Pogba has 10+ years at the top to come.

As such, £7.7m a year (over 10 years) can be justified (somewhat) for a player who has the potential to become one of the world's best midfielders, though it's still an obscene price, and I doubt Pogba will actually go for that kind of money.

It would be sweet to steal Pogba from Manchester United, though it would also be hilarious to see United pay through the nose (to the tune of £77m) to re-sign a player they sold for £800k :-)

  1. How can they justify 77 million pounds hes not worth that never.

  2. Pogba could go to one of six teams, Chelsea, City, Real Madrid, Barca, Bayern and PSG... Fantasy football is the only way we'll get him.

  3. Shift big Emre into middle of park, he could develop into a yaya toure type player. Strong tackler, surging forward from midfield and has a powerful shot. Also priority has to be to add another proven goalscorer.

  4. Pogba is a fantasy football signing. Fantastic footballer I hope he goes to Spain. Whoever gets him have a star player.

  5. What is funny is this article. Thinking Liverpool could even be one of the 6. YOU SIGN LAMBERT not Pogba :) United, Real Madrid, PSG, City, Chelsea and Bayern would be the 6 clubs that could do this deal. He'd cost €100M but would be worth it.

  6. Haha Liverpool live in the past. You couldn't afford him. £77m + wages of £10m a season! Reds Muppets keep dreaming!!!!
    Pogba will go to Real

  7. Watching those highlights of Ibe again he looks some player, him and Sterling cutting in from wide positions something to look forward to, just need another finisher to go along with Studge. Future looks good if we hold on to these lads.

  9. Gianelli Imbula from Ol. Marseille. Hell of a player. You will see... I hope we are after him come summer. Add Lacazette to that and we are sorted in central midfield and attack. Ps. Check Imbula's statts at squawka, his pass ratio, forward passes, number of mistakes...

  11. Lets be honest Gerrard no longer being in the team is no big loss and with the exception of last season hasnt been since we finished second under Rafa. Lallana will step up next season as should Lovren freeing Emre Can up to monster up the midfield.

  12. BR won't sign any mega star, he isn't that self confident. Also, I think, he isn't comfortable to handle French players, who are technically outstanding, but a bit emotional. Didn't go for Lecazzette, or Remi or Schinderlin or Lloris.

Pogba won't come to LFC, neither MU. I don't think Wenger 'll spend 85mn (that's minimum, if Bale was worth that amount) for a player, while Chelsea has spent too much already, JM 'll not get much money. Only 1 left & I think Pogba 'll join MCity, the bst possible replacement for aging Yaya. Also, I am sure Pogba 'll love to return to the city he grew up & was sold unceremoniously.

Awesome player, the probable next multiple Ballon De Oorr winner, after CR & Messi ages out. He isn't a perfect replacement for SG ........ much, much better option. I believe, this bunch of French players 'll win at least a couple of major (WC, EURO) in next 10-12 years. Areola, Zouma, Varane, Digne, Sakho, Schinderlin, Imbulla, Pogba, Rabiot, Leccazzette, Thauvin, Griezzman, Coman, Boga... it's like the Germans of 70s & 80s

  13. He is not worth it a defensive/ central midfielder for that money what joke especially when they paid pennies for him.
Also he plays in Italy a crap league full of over rated players.

  14. You would spend 77 million on him then how stupid must United be sold him for 800k and paying double maybe triple what he is worth to get him back.
    The laughing stock of Europe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. Agree , Lovren needs to step up so Can ,can move up !!!

  16. Griezzman played a blinder yasterday

  17. Chelsea want Kevin De Bruyne back .

Clubs let young players go to quickly and do not give them enough time to settle in .

  18. Trust me, this boy is as good an attacker as anybody. He was available for 23mn, & we paid 26m for Lallana........

  19. Since when do Chelsea want De Bruyne back?

  21. I understood why Gerrard had to be played. It was probably the last derby for the season, and you can't just rob Gerrard of the chance to play his last derby while he *knows* it is his last. Derbies provide exception to rule in many different ways. Another way is that generally speaking, you'd chastise Liverpool for not winning a game against a struggling team, but in the context of a derby, that angle of thinking IMO should go out the window.

I really don't think we were that bad. Of course it wasn't our best, but the way I saw it, we dominated the run of play, and created a few great chances despite Everton parking the bus. We obviously faltered once Coutinho went off, but I think that's natural for any team when their creative outlet disappears. Even Chelsea can struggle creatively without Fabregas.

  22. The walls are closing in on Rodgers...

  23. We can forget Pogba. There is no chance we will able to afford such a transfer fee and then his wages plus there is no way he will move to a club without CL.

We would be better off giving Rossiter a chance to shine.

Still cannot get over the fact that we blew almost £120m which half was on 3 Southampton players and Balotelli...

Who is going to want to sign for us at the start of next season? We ain't going to have another £120m to spend anytime soon unless Sterling moves to Madrid for £50m plus and generate cash from other sales.

What a farce this season has been!

  24. Pogba will not be joining Liverpool. Bayern, Real, Barca, Chelsea, City and PSG.
That's your six and anyone who thinks he'll be at anfield doing anything other than playing for our opponents is in need of medical assistance.
Hahaha I can see him now, playing in the middle with Joe Xavi (shabby) Allen.

    ReplyDelete
  25. He is worth it, especially when he will be a mainstay in any midfield for a decade.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Indeed. Matic anyone?
Having the good sense to correct a mistake is far more important.
Can't believe we have the temerity to try and ridicule other clubs re Anderson and Pogba when we had Charlie Adam and now Joe Allen in our midfield.

  27. In fairness he does look a very good player (youtube) and that same powerful driving midfielder like Pogba but for far less money. Would like to see more of him live first but hopefully that's what are scouts are doing

  28. I said it for January and still believe that Lacazette should be our number 1 target. We shouldn't add too many players even though there are 5 possible targets on a free this summer Reid, Khedira, Milner, Konoplyanka and Ings.

Reid - I think we should let Illori come back and fight for his place instead.
Khedira - This is the 1 free player I say push the boat out for.
Milner - I think he'll stay at City.
Konoplyanka - Not really needed now, with Ibe coming in and Ojo to come soon.
Ings - I'm a bit undecided on this one. If Balotelli doesn't come good and we sell him, Lambert and Borini then maybe Ings could complete our quartet of Sturridge, Lacazette, Origi and Ings. Or do we let Jerome Sinclair and Sterling give us that 4th option.

Overall I think a keeper like Perin to challenge Mignolet then Kedira, Lacazette and Origi (4 players but only 3 new signings)

  29. On that assumption Hendo should have cost 77 million too you are are kidding arent you.

  30. Who gives a toss about Chelsea they play no part in this story.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Sorry Did put link but it has been deleted !!

  32. We had our chance to sing Lacazette at the start of the season. We had loads of cash and CL to offer too. Lacazette will not even consider us now. He can cherry pick any club he wants and LFC will not be anywhere near his thoughts at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I don't agree, the likes of Chelsea, City, United, Bayern, Madrid and Barca won't be looking at him, they look at more proven players like Benzema etc. Lacazette is just that step below at the moment and still a possibility for us......like Suarez was at Ajax. The only big spending club that might go for him is PSG as they like to snap up the top French league players

    ReplyDelete
  34. We won't spend big money on top talent . Pogba won't be coming to Livetpool so theirs not much point talking about it really

    ReplyDelete
  35. We will have to show him the door then

    ReplyDelete
  36. I don't see how it would be hilarious for Manu to re-sign him for any figure if they get a top top midfielder for the next ten years. I wont be laughing

    ReplyDelete
  37. Would love him to come but extremely unlikely

    ReplyDelete
  38. You are dreaming. Lacazette is one of the most prolific strikers in Europe this season and he is only going to improve. He will not be signing for Liverpool.

  39. B Rodgers should replace S Gerrard(34) with these two CM's for £70M:
    T Alcantara(23) Of Bayern Munich for £25-£35M and Koke(22) Of A Madrid for £30-£35
