'We need a...': BR confirms one of LFC's transfer priorities & reveals plan to sign a new goalkeeper

It's an open secret that Liverpool desperately need a new top-quality goalkeeper, and Brendan Rodgers has now emphatically confirmed (for the first time) that the club is actively scouring the transfer market for a new number-one.

When asked this weekend about Liverpool's January transfer business, he told reporters:

“We need a goalkeeper - it’s just depending on how long Brad Jones is going to be out injured.

"We are obviously down and have got two young inexperienced keepers behind Simon, who is only just back in the team, so we need to assess that.”

Tim Howard recently claimed that there's 'no way back' for Mignolet, and that definitely seems to be the case. He may keep the odd clean sheet every now and again, but it seems that very people have much faith in the Belgian these days. LFC legend Mark Lawrenson certainly doesn't, and he reiterated this again today, when he told the Liverpool Echo:

"I don’t have faith in Simon Mignolet. I have never once seen Mignolet race out of his goal and clear a few people out. As a centre-back, I can tell you that’s what you want from your goalkeeper. If a striker is taken out by Mignolet, he will think twice about going back in for a challenge".

In my view, it's not a question of if but when. Mignolet should've been replaced last summer, but Rodgers failed to act, and Liverpool consequently suffered. The manager surely won't make the same mistake again, especially now that he himself is expendable.

Liverpool are currently linked with a whole host of goalkeepers, but who is the best option?

  1. I don't want to by an older GK just to have this conversation again, I am a huge fan of Mattia Perin, and have mentioned him numerous times since the start of the season... The likelihood of LFC going in for him, slim to non in my opinion.... Neto has a verbal with Juve, Barca have their ban, so ter stegen is highly unlikely... I also like Ron-Zeiler, Kevin Trapp and Anthony Lopes of Lyon.... But I have a bad feeling we'll end up with Romero if anyone, which is going to be a disater...

  2. Personally I *don't* like Perin, I think he'd struggle to adapt, he's young and inexperienced, and though he's a talented stopper I'd say it's like for like with Mignolet.

I'm wondering whether Samir Handanovic of Inter might be the target. He's 30, very experienced, seen and done pretty much the lot in football, and I'd rate him -- I guess most of us would -- in the top 5 or 10 keepers in the world.

This might help explain the persistence of the "Lucas to Inter" rumours. Some Italian sites reported interest from us in Handanovic last month, and of course we've been in for him in the past... Inter are struggling presently, they've spent a lot of money in the last couple of windows, and have an Argentine international as backup to Handanovic, so they have a guy in place to take over and may need to trim their wage bill. It'd be a great signing for us...

  3. Rodgers biggest mistake was getting rid of Reina he should of said to Mignolet to watch and study Reina that then would of made Reina play better as he would of had some serious competition and knew he would of been dropped if he had a crap game.... I would not sign Cech as he will need replacing in a years time... basically this screw up is totally at Dumbass Rodgers door....

  4. ps, ur dead right craig, reina is the best, rodgers made a boo boo.

  5. These days and age money talks. I'd say we should go all out for P Cech from Chelsea. If we tabled enough £££ for Cech then the players head will turn and he will eventually try to force a move. Every player have a price we just need to try harder

    ReplyDelete
  6. Why not go for Bernd Leno of Leverkusen

    ReplyDelete
  7. Rodgers has been banging on for a couple of years about wanting a "leader" in defence. All that time he had Skrtel, so I think that answers the question. Skrtel doesn't seem to be a vocal leader at the back and he's prone to panic, just like everyone else, when the team starts to come under pressure. I think there is more to it than just being willing to stick your head in front of someone else's boot. Copping a gash on the head is admirable but it doesn't make you a leader.

I'm not entirely sure about all the negative comments on Henderson. Perhaps I don't watch him with that same critical eye, I haven't seen anything from him that concerns me. Plus it's about much more than what we see on the pitch as fans. We don't hear what the players say to each other or see what goes on in the dressing room or the training field. The captain has to lead on and off the pitch, he has to set the example in all kinds of different ways. Henderson, by most accounts, is the model player behind the scenes and that's probably why he'll get the nod. We can say that this is Rodgers playing "favourites" but that seems a childish assessment. In a purely practical sense the manager wants the captain to be the guy who shows by example what he wants from everyone in the team. Naturally enough Rodgers will choose a player who agrees with his philosophies and who fits his system and his methods. So it's not just that Rodgers likes Henderson, it's that he likes Henderson BECAUSE Henderson embodies the attitude that he thinks works for his system, and therefore he's the best choice as captain.

  8. Benteke is as injury prone as Sturridge

    ReplyDelete
  9. They let Mata leave for United

  10. Reina was poor under Rodgers, he made 8 or 9 mistakes in Rodgers first season

  11. All i'm saying is that lets not jump the gun labeling the kid from a throwaway soundbite. his actions could simply come from the result of him being unsettled and wanting a move. When Gerrard got left out of the Madrid game and then did the interview about Liverpool not offering him a contract I never heard anyone saying he has got an attitude problem.

If people are really concerned with players coming to the club with an attitude problem then maybe Rodgers and the transfer committee should of did more research on Lovern before signing him.

this was taken from the arsenal form in July 14 talking about a possible move for Lovern

"I am not a fan of his. Great skill set but his mind lapses are well known
in Croatia and its his mental weakness that is stopping him from
becoming an elite defender. I had a chance to play against him
and know quite a few of his close friends and his attitude isn't that
great either. Didn't have the chance to watch as many of his games this
season but there is a reason why France press and fans weren't that into
him. Maybe he matured due to the fact he got married and became a father
but I wouldn't be that excited if we brought him in.

He had a brilliant season for Dinamo before he was sold to Lyon, has a
high ceiling but as I said, he simply drifts out of some important games
and tends to make some unbelievable mistakes. Maybe he managed to cut
them out of his game but Im not convinced he has."

  12. Rodger is an dumass in transfer and choosing players.

    ReplyDelete
  13. No more Italians they just do not seem to work out.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Lucas or Skrtel is still better than Henderson.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Just stop with ridiculous Mignolet bashing. Cech is better but will not come and the other names linked are not better than Simon. Mignolet is also an hard worker guy with strong mentality, He diserve better support from the Liverpool supporters. Keep money to buy a decent 6 and a striker !

    ReplyDelete
  16. It will all depend on who is available, the club is not in a strong position to go shopping for world class keepers. If Liverpool sign a younger keeper he might not settle in straight away so won't solve any problems in the short term. Cech would be the pick of the older experience keepers but I can't see him leaving now. Valdes was an interesting option but he's not really going to be competitive for another couple of months so I think it's not a great loss.

I feel it will be someone of genuine quality or we won't bother at all. Any inbound player has to be either an instant upgrade or a younger guy with massive potential capable of growing past Mignolet. So some of the more average names on that list ... I'd rather not bother.

  17. Based on your definition. even Liverpool have stretched certain aspects of the Liverpool Way,

For example "fair play" has given way to "professional play" with the unfortunate increase in simulation, time wasting, asking refs to book players, crowding and haranguing the ref & his assistants etc.

Football doesn't exist in a bubble, it evolves the same way society does, or in this case, devolves.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Sakho and Markovic were full internationals, and on the radar of major European clubs long before Rodgers signed them. Hardly nobodies.

    ReplyDelete
  19. When football started becoming big business Liverpool under Moores and Parry continued to function like a corner shop.

Together with bad personnel choices in the 90s - an entire team being replaced with inferior players - we fell behind and have been trying to claw our way back ever since.

We made some inroads before HIcks and Gillett showed their true colours. Now, FSG is trying to put us on a more business oriented footing.

Ayre does well in the commercial side but less so in player negotiations. The transfer committee has also yet to demonstrate significant value to the club.

We'll get there but it will take time.

  20. Yeah, all of Rafa's signings are the best! Some of you people are so obsessed with Rafa that you seem sick.

    ReplyDelete
  21. It's because what's the Mata?
Mata is as good as a done player now & Chelsea got their £ while they could.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Why is Cech even an option? What they smoking at this site?

    ReplyDelete
  23. It seems that playing Gerrard in Lucas' position will be the cause of both of them leaving, which is a shame because Lucas is looking back to his best again. I'm firmly in the keep Rodgers camp, but I don't understand why he keeps trying to bang square pegs in round holes...

    ReplyDelete
  24. He probably isn't an option, but he is too good to be a reserve goalkeeper and we desperately need a keeper.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Also it is not just BR who had spoke about being captain, Gerrard has also spoken a number of times about Hendo being captain

    ReplyDelete
  26. The only dumb add is you.

Reina spent the best part of 3 years telling the world how much he wanted to play for barc and when he thought his chance came he couldn't leave fast enough.

When barc changed there mind he went on loan to Napoli and he wasn't what you call amazing, in fact he made quite a few mistakes.

He then had the chance to stay and fight for his place, sign for Napoli but for less wages or go to Bayern to keep the bench warm but stay on the same money.. He chose the money.

That should tell you all you need to know about Reina

    ReplyDelete
  27. And this is why people say Liverpool fans are dumb -_-
I would have posted a long comment about how bad skrtel is but leg me just summarise as to why he shouldnt be captain:

    - Average at best
    - the cause of leaking in so many goals for the 3rd season in a row
    - broke the record of most own goals in a Premier League season
    - cannot defend, makes average strikers seem world class
    - no leadership, cannot organise the defence

in fact im surprised why he hasnt been dropped yet after last seasons horror show. Skrtel should thank Suarez and Sturridge otherwise he would have been sold for free to a championship club.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Too early for captaincy

    ReplyDelete
  29. Kolo rarely plays, the captain should be at least featuring in almost every game, i would have to say Henderson.

    ReplyDelete
  30. It'd be Lucas for me, but I don't see it being anyone from the Benitez era, as FSG/Rogers are trying to get rid to bring the wage bill down. Sktrl and Lucas will be the two highest earners once Gerrard and Johnson leave in summer; for that reason, I don't see them being at the club after this summer.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Personally I wouldn't rule out Skirtel Sakho or Loveten

    ReplyDelete
  32. Jaimie, you excluded Ter Stegen who would have been my vote. But I voted for Perin anyhow.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Totally agreed. Ter Stegen or Perin for me.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Thing I like about Perin is his bloodthirsty aggression in his area. Lawrenson would appreciate the way he own his space and cleans out attackers. He's like an angry Rottweiler, with agility to boot. Waxing lyrical a bit here, but that's what happens when you read Dylan Thomas in the morning.

Inexperienced, yes, but I'd wager he has the skill to make something great of his career.

It's all probably moot, anyway. Bet we end up with a 'bargain' Romero or Neto.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hendo is a clown, this season he has been like a headless chicken, he has no authority over the other players and will be a disaster. Out of all our player at the moment Skertel should deffo get it.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I also go for Lucas.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Phil, you are right, it would be a real shame and I'm not convinced yet by a number of the replacements alough Can has looked OK from a defensive point of view in recent weeks.

    ReplyDelete
  38. BR wondering how long Jones will be out injured- why? He shouldn't be our no1 or 2 It shows just how lacking we have been since Reina went. No chance of Cech go German imo Leno or ter Stegen

    ReplyDelete
  39. There is no way Toure will be made captain.
    1. He has never been a regular starter under Rodgers.
    2. He makes too errors that lead to goals...we are glad to see him appear in defence when everybody else is playing terribly, beacuse he can at least win headers!
    3. Rodgers has no confidence in him and even tried to sell him to a Turkish team in the summer.
    4. I am not aware of his contract having been renewed so therefore he is a free agent in the summer.

    ReplyDelete
  40. We already have a centre half with pace. His name is Tiago Ilori. We shipped him out on loan to France at the beginning of the season. When Ilori was at Sporting Lisbon, at the age of 19 in speed trials he was faster than both Christiano Ronaldo and Nani at that age. That's damn quick. He also has the height, but he needed the games. He got injured early in pre-season so we didn't get to see much of him. Hopefully he can come back next season and stake a place in the team. He's good on the ball too. If Lovren can find his confidence and Brendan Rodgers either gets a good defensive midfielder or plays Emre Can in that role, then we will start to have the makings of a very good defensive spine in my humble opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Did you see Perin's sending off against Roma? Yes, he leapt from his line like an angry Rottweiler, but the forward took a little touch away from him, and suddenly Perin's aggression didn't look quite so clever as he couldn't stop himself from fouling the player. Penalty and sending off. Maybe better to go gentle into that, uh, good tackle...

All keepers make mistakes but there's something about Perin that concerns me. Not least the price tag. He's agile and aggressive, but not commanding. He's young and energetic, but I wonder if he might be a nervy presence, like Mignolet has been. I'd rather see a calm, physical, intimidating individual back there.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Yes we need to think about a goalkeeper because Jones is injured....that's why...

    ReplyDelete
  43. By the way only noticed yesterday that Lacazette is 19 in 20 this season. That's not bad at all.

    ReplyDelete
  44. It's a bit of catch 22 with Sturridge isn't it? If he comes back and he doesn't score a lot of goals, he will be no use to us. If he comes back and he does, Hodgson will call him up for England again...

    ReplyDelete
  45. You think 20 million for Benteke is reasonable?

    ReplyDelete
  46. I say Balo to Lyon plus 4 million for Lacazette :-)

    ReplyDelete
  47. We don't get Ochoa because Ochoa is not the type of goalkeeper we need, he is the type of goalkeeper we've got. Actually, scratch that, we most likely will get Ochoa because he is not the goalkeeper we need.

    ReplyDelete
  48. What's a Mata you, gotta no respect...

    ReplyDelete
  49. That's paper talk. Cech was ahead of Schwarzer anyway so that doesn't change anything.

    ReplyDelete
  50. The point is not, should Reina have left. The point is, he left and we replaced him with someone who wasn't better. So at least if you're going to get rid of a goalkeeper because of attitude, performance, whatever, make sure the 9 million you spend gets you a better one.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Personally I loved every minute Aquilani played. All three of them.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I was quite happy when we signed Migs. He had played well during his time at Sunderland and showed great potential.

He won't be the first player who has failed to forfill his potential and he certainly won't be the last.

Look at Utd.. It took them years and a number of goalkeepers to replace Schmeichel, you could argue that it took us nearly 10 years to find a true replacement for Grobbelaar.

Even the best managers struggle finding a top goalkeeper.

    ReplyDelete
  53. i wish we'd sign Fraser Forster but we signed Mignolet instead :(

    ReplyDelete
  54. Good points. I didn't see the Roma blooper but it illustrates your point well. I suppose what's exciting for the fans might be a little too exciting for the defence, yes. I'd also prefer a calm and intimidating presence there. How old is Oliver Khan again? Not that he was calm...

    ReplyDelete
  55. I personally would love us to sign Reina back but it will never happen.

out of the choices there isn't much out there so Cech for me! And his contract runs out in the summer so Chelsea and Jose will have no choice but to let him leave!

    ReplyDelete
  56. A certain John Terry is out of contract too in the summer. Ok he 32 but he has had a blinding season. Forget the troubles, he is a leader. Could he come in the summer and do a job for 2-3 years?

    ReplyDelete
  57. It'll come with experience... Price might be a tad rich for a sugarfree daddies though...I like a GK who has enough confidence/arrogance to command his goal, and especially in one so young and so damned promising... This kid is the real deal, which means we'll not even look, because we aren't ballsy enough...Rather save a few milllion and have this conversation again in the summer.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Typical, he played a blinder against Liverpool one, and Brendan was enamered..... Hasn't exactly taken the league by storm since though...
Time has come to show some back bone, and back somebody real...

    ReplyDelete
  59. Reina made his bed.... He was as much a liability as ming while at Napoli aswell, so not exactly any kind of example for another struggling GK..

    ReplyDelete
  60. He's 34, and heading to MLS (or Mid East for a payday and sun).
