Next Transfer? LFC pushing to sign 'exceptional' £10m attacker in the next 2 weeks

Liverpool are once again being linked with a move for 'exceptional' Norwich City winger Nathan Redmond, and the key to the deal is allegedly Oussama Assaidi's imminent move to Al Ahli.

In November, multiple reports claimed that:

* Liverpool plan to make a £10m January offer for Redmond.

* LFC scouts have assessed Redmond's suitability for a move to Anfield.

* Rodgers and his fabled transfer committee 'believe' that Redmond, 20, is capable of making a similar impact to Raheem Sterling.

Today, the Daily Mail reports that Liverpool are set to 'reignite interest' in Redmond, and Rodgers sees the 20-year old as an ideal replacement for Assaidi.

£10m for a 20-year old currently plying his trade in the Championship? If Redmond had prodigious creative stats then I could understand it, but there's nothing remarkable about his goals/assists record:

* 2012-13: 2 goals/7 assists in 42 apps.
* 2013-14: 1 goal/6 assists in 39 apps.
* 2014-15: 2 goal/6 assists in 16 apps (so far)
* TOTALS: 5 goals/19 assists in 105 apps
* Goal every 21 apps.
* Goal/assist every 4.4 apps.

Is this worth £10m? Not for me. Redmond is probably an upgrade on Assaidi (which isn't hard!), but he's not really an improvement on any of the players already at Anfield.

I also don't see the logic in spending £10m on yet another British young player when the Reds already have Ibe, Teixeira, and a whole host of others on the books.

In May, Redmond scored a hat-trick for the England U21 team, but after the game, manager Gareth Southgate admitted that consistently scoring goals remains a problem for the 'devastating' youngster. He told reporters:

"The one area of his game he [Redmond] is looking to add is goals, and I think we are able to give him the freedom to play in more advanced areas. Tonight, his finishing matched the rest of his game".

In my view, FSG should institute an immediate moratorium on buying overpriced British players. Liverpool's squad is stacked with Brits right now, and their inconsistent form is one of the main reasons the club is stuck in 8th place in the league table.

If Liverpool can get Redmond for around £5m, it'll represent decent business, but anything more than that is too much (IMO). As much as many will be against it, bringing Ibe back from Derby makes more sense than spending £10m on Redmond.

  2. well you aren't going to get him for £5m, so move on, nothing to see here.

  3. Why would we neem replace someone who wasnt even at the club

  4. it worries me that even the rumours about transfers are so boring.

  5. replace assaidi? how do you replace someone wasn't even here

  6. The Rodgering continues, then.

Apparently Sterling would only commit to LFC once he received assurances from Ian Ayre that the club aren't planning to sack Brendan.

  7. This would be a terrible piece of business for several reasons (in no particular order...
    1. We're replacing someone who wasn't even at the club?
    2. Paying 10M for a current Championship level player?
    3. Mediocre stats.
    4. We already own a player who is producing better at the same level in Ibe. He's a regular for Derby (who is joint top the league), similar stats, a year younger, has higher upside, and is frankly just more talented physically. If we want to "replace" Assaidi, just bring back Ibe.

On a side note, this got me thinking on our loan deals. We have a TON of non-youth players on loan that have no realistic chance back in the squad. This is a result of our poor transfer business, but on the bright side, we can easily get around 20M spare cash to spend if we sell all of them plus our lower end sales from our squad.
    5M Assaidi
    5M Aspas
    5M Coates
    3M Alberto
    3M Ilori

The quotes might seem high, but keep in mind the Assaidi deal is already done. If we can get 5M for him, we should be able to get similar amounts for the others.

Bring back Ibe and Wisdom, add in Origi, and we already own some very good "replacements." Our squad numbers would be there; we just need to start building up quality in our starting XI as our younger players grow.

  8. Lol, who's Redmond or whoerr pls???

    ReplyDelete
  9. No way we'll be spending 10 mil on Redmond when we're already well stocked with better players than him in that position

    ReplyDelete
  10. Not for me completely overrated. I'd spend the money on different striker.

  12. Pure gossip...doesn't even pass the first level of a sanity check.

  13. I just hope this will remain a rumor. We have a lot of young players better than Redmond so why waste more money on top of what we've flushed already. It is quite depressing with some of the players we have been linked with. It's only a rumor at this point but still depressing knowing the transfer could very well happen.

  14. Can't say much about Assaidi apart from... he had a trick up his sleeve, could bob and weave but ultimately flattered to deceive... Didn't know my comment would go this way.

  15. Indeed, if Liverpool need a player like this then Ibe has similar stats for a team playing at the same level. It does seem like another middle of the road signing that may or may not be good for the club in the long run. He's certainly not going to be brought in to help the club push for a CL spot, at best he'd just be another member of the squad and would take a few months to really settle in and adjust to the system.

The only thing I'd say is that it's not entirely a bad idea for Liverpool to be stacked with young talent. I don't really agree with the notion that having too many young players around will be bad for the club. It will be bad for the players who don't make it, but from a club perspective it's great because the best players will rise to the top and earn their spot. Having young player fail to come good might seem like a blight on youth development but the reality is that very few players will ever be good enough to make it. Liverpool need to stack the odds, unfortunately that comes at the cost of the players themselves and Suso is a prime example of this.

I think what bothers most fans is that we're not strongly linked with true top quality players. If we were signing players like Sanchez, Higuain, Cavani etc then no one would give two hoots if we also signed Redmond. We'd probably say good luck to him, welcome to the club. Chelsea have been doing this for years and I doubt their fans see it as a problem. It's only when these are the ONLY signings that fans get depressed.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Spot on! I don't think anyone is truly annoyed by the fact that we're linked with so many young stars. It's the lack of any other rumors and the fear that buying young players will hinder our ability to improve the squad in the "now" that people are really worried about.

  17. Someone need to scratch BR's a**, it's itching. He has got 6mn for Aassaidi, now hopping to blow it for another bench strengthener. Please, bring back Ibe, don't sell Suso & please get a quality starter - we have 6/7 punctures in starting lineup to seal...

    ReplyDelete
  18. Fans will be excited about this one! Just like Borini!

    ReplyDelete
  19. I don't think BR can see what the fans see, this is why most of his transfer are failure.

    ReplyDelete
  20. That would give us two support strikers in him and Balotelli and still no goal scorer.

    ReplyDelete
  21. No, Jaimie, picking up Redmond for 5 million is not good business. What do you care more about? Having good players, or being financially clever for the mere sake of it?

Bringing in a supposed overrated, inconsistent Englishman is never good business, no matter how much you pay for him, because at the end of the day, he won't deliver on the field. This attitude you convey to us rather reflects one of a small-club fan.

  22. Let's hope that your latest comments have the same desired effect this weekend as did for Markovic last weekend. If Mario scores a hat-trick expect to hear from me.....asking for next weeks lottery numbers :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. I take that all back lol
Just read that apparently Sunderland have paid £14 million, when reported yesterday Toronto would be asking for £3 million.....doubt 9 other clubs that stupid in premiership
Makes Mario look an absolute bargain :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. We have plenty of talent in this position it is a list clogging transfer and closes the pathway for the likes of Ibe and Wilson the club needs some big names and should be using the academy for a certain amount of depth.
To me that makes financial sense we dont need more over rated English talent or Borinis or Albertos time for this club to think big.

  25. OMG I despair!!!
On the plus side no doubt the transfer committee will stuff this one up as well....thankfully

  27. I'm sure the way this works is Jounos down pub having sweep stakes. One picks a name out of a hat another a club from another hat then they run with it to see which story has the most legs....utter tosh!!

  28. Off topic, but the autoplay video advert is incredibly annoying on android devices - not caught by adblock and difficult to mute

  29. Fair enough on the Lallana thing, but Balo for 16m, considering what he has been worth and the current market, was a steal. Obviously not one that paid off but we paid well under the odds for what was a world class, first choice international, young, powerful striker.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Lallana was money well spent.

    ReplyDelete
  31. do you see more defensive work in a balotelli-sturridge duo? because i don't. The difference is, balotelli can only play decent when combined with another striker that fits him. Higuain could do a great job with sturridge, but is also highly effective when playing on his own.

Higuain is just a prime example, there are many good strikers who would help us improve our goal scoring. Good strikers are able to play in different formations, Balo can't.

    ReplyDelete
  32. i don't recall any fan on this forum questioning the price tag of Balotelli.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Well, here's the report, for what it's worth http://metro.co.uk/2015/01/13/raheem-sterling-closing-in-on-new-liverpool-deal-after-being-reassured-about-brendan-rodgers-future-5020589/?

  34. It was, but at the time, we were all a bit taken aback that 25m was actually spent on him. I was always a fan and keen on him coming to Liverpool, but even I said that it should be 15-20m and probably closer to the 15m mark. Like you said though, now we can see that he'll hopefully justify that pricetag.

    ReplyDelete
  35. No Redmond for me either at that price

    ReplyDelete
  36. No way no way if we are not blind

    ReplyDelete
  37. In my opinion it is about how does player x fit in the y team, and what he brings to it, not how much he costs. At the moment I believed much more in BR's pressing game and his footballing philosophy in general so Lallana with an engine up his arse, stamina, speed, ball control(both feet), versatility etc was money well spent even at 30. Because him playing well(with players we already had) meant we are inches away from CL spot. Those inches being one of the three- a GK, a DM, fit DS. All three mean title race we wouldn't lose.

    ReplyDelete
  38. The odd thing is that I thought JK was against spending even relatively small sums money on future prospects at the expense of the here and now.

Personally I can see arguments both ways and feel there needs to be a balance.

  39. We're relying on them

    ReplyDelete
  40. ....to mess it up

    ReplyDelete
  41. We already have a few up and comers...

    ReplyDelete
  42. Well me makes 1 (although I did say any money spent on him would be too much...)

    ReplyDelete
  43. Let's hope they "up and come" then ....soon ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  44. For Southampton, yes.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I thought he would be the most talked about signing of the year....... and I was right for all the wrong reasons!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I disagreed then and I disagree now that 16 million is good value for Balotelli. Let's take a step back and look at what Balotelli really was and is. At 18, he was talented, much sought after striker at one of the top clubs in Italy (even Europe at the time). City bought him for 25 million and at 24, when we signed him, his value had already dropped. That's not normal. Players who are 24 are at the beginning of their prime which is usually between 24 and 28. Had he developed his talent the pricetag he had at 20 would have doubled by 2014. It didn't. The only reason his value dropped was because Milan wanted to get rid. Not because he is no longer talented but because he has a terrible attitude and he does not fit in at any club or anywhere. He averaged a goal every two games. The guys we lost to Barca and injury averaged one every game nearly. Balotelli is just a player who looked good when he was a kid and never made it. He is a name. A false promise. But what he is not, and that is the most important bit, is a good football player. And in that respect, 16 million is far too much for such an average player with such average statistics.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Maybe that's why we laid some better grass at Anfield? Always need a smooth birth.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Totally agree, that's why I don't fancy Higuain

    ReplyDelete
  49. I totally agree with you there

    ReplyDelete
  50. We should keep Alberto and Ilori in my opinion, at least until they have been given a chance in our first team. Ilori could turn into i good ball playing center back, and Alberto is a nice technical player who could pull the strings in the middle one day given the right nurturing

The other 3 though need to be shifted, well 2 now that Assaidi has left!

    ReplyDelete
  51. It might be said all too much but Markovic has the potential to be one of the best...Ibe has potential to be a quality play but we haven't seen him at a top level yet

    ReplyDelete
  52. Can is an anything...he's so versatile that i don't think even he knows his best positions

    ReplyDelete
  53. But doesnt he have to play well first? I've seen glimpses but hardly the consistent class performances I would expect. I agree though that Lallana may come good but I cant help but point at his replacement at Soton who took about 2 minutes to "get used to life in the Premiership"

    ReplyDelete
  54. At a club that thought it would be success not to get relegated, and Liverpool?

    ReplyDelete
  55. I am hoping this is not true at all, N Redmond(20) is worth £5-£6M and no more. If B Rodgers wants to bring in top class quick winger with mobility, pace, speed and trickery who will keep full backs on their toes and stretch teams game in game out at Anfield and Away from Home.

B Rodgers need to offer swansea £5-£9M for Jefferson Montero(24)

I have been going about this player for last three seasons, he is awesome winger and he is relentless, he anielates full backs one vs one.

Or B Rodgers should offer Crystal Palace £5-£8M for Y Bolaise(25) who is similar with more skills.

    ReplyDelete
  56. At all of the players mentioned: Only Llori(21) the club should try to keep on books for few more seasons as he could become top class centre back if he beefs up and baulks up a little bit.

Alberto(21) and Aspas(27) need to be shipped out in the summer .

B Rodgers should bring in J Montero(25) Of Swansea for £6-£8M to replace O Assaidi(25), I have been going on about Montero(24) for last three seasons and a half since i see him in a Villareal shirt anielate Marcelo(26) Of Real Madrid.

And then when he went on loan to Real Betis, he was anielating D Alves(31) Of Barcelona and Marcelo(26) everytime he came against them. He has got both players sent off against him for persistant fouling as he is relentless and he ruined Chambers(19) when Swansea played Arsenal at Home.

He is an exciting winger with all the key attributes to be world class in next two seasons, if he can bring goals to his game he will be world class.

B Rodgers should bring J Montero(25) Of Swansea to club this transfer window for £6-£8M

    ReplyDelete
  57. The thing is B Rodgers should have brought Schneiderlin(25) to club for £20M ahead of Lovren(25) and kept Agger(30) at the club.

And brought in a top class GK in the summer

Can(20), Markovic(20) will come good over next few years.

Its the over spending on Players what has been shocking:

    F Borini(23) £10.5M when he is worth £5-£7M if overspent: £2-£5.5M

    L Alberto(21) £6.8M when he was worth £3-£5M
    Overspent: £3-£3.8M

    I Aspas(27) £7.7M when he was worth £4-£5M
    Overspent: £2.7-£3.7M

    J Allen(24) £15M when he was worth £7-£9M
    Overspent: £6-8M

    A Lallana(26) £25M when he was worth £15-£18M
    Overspent: £7-£10M

    D Lovren(25) £20M when he was worth £13-£15M
    Overspent: £5-7M

    L Markovic(20) £20m when he was worth £10-£12M
    Overspent: £8-£10M

  58. I don't need to watch them, I attended most of them. Gerrard is my favourite player of all time. He was and always has been a massive part of any success during his tenure. Last season the majority of our squad/group/team were poor. SAS + Gerrard CARRIED them. The same player are equally poor, but no SAS to save us .. even Gerrard can't cope with our DISGRACEFUL defending. The thought of Henderson as our captain, makes me CRINGE. Buck needs to go, YESTERDAY!

    ReplyDelete
  59. If Ibe is progressing well on loan and getting some confidence, let him keep going. No need to add to the pressure of expectation when the season is pretty much a write-off. Given the circumstances, I'd let the current summer additions (who seem to be improving) continue, let them have the whole season to either prove themselves worthy or not, and then judge as who can stay and who should be moved on. Then build for next season with some tweaking. Ibe can come into that brimming with confidence (assuming things continue to go well for him at Derby).

  60. please... 1 keeper from Arabian money.. NETO / RYAN / OCHOA

    ReplyDelete
  61. No we dont. What we have is an excuse of a keeper, just so that referees can start the matches because we have 11 players on the pitch

    ReplyDelete
  62. STefan Jovetic has long been linked with us since Kenny's days and we didnt move for him. I doubt we would do so now, now that he would cost us more.

  63. He is quite an upgrade for sure on Borini, Lambert. Thats a fact.

  64. Skrtel has been the best defender at liverpool (cummulatively) for 4 seasons now. No sense and justified explanation for doubting him. Show me another defender who has been ever-present and impactful like Martin
