Transfer Shocker: LFC want to sign 'outstanding' £43m Man Utd star in cut-price deal

Over the summer, Liverpool reportedly pursued a deal for Colombian superstar Radamel Falco, who, sadly, ended up joining Manchester United. Brendan Rodgers signed Mario Balotelli instead, but with the Italian striker failing to deliver the goods, the Reds are reportedly considering another improbable move for the Manchester United striker.

Prior to the Man Utd deal, French radio station RMC claimed that:

* FSG approved a season-long loan deal worth £12m (€15m).

* The contract would include an automatic £40m (€50m) purchase clause.

Well, according to The Sunday Times over the weekend:

* Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City are all 'keeping tabs' on Falcao.

* Man United have an option to buy Falcao for £43m at the end of the season, but the Reds are reportedly hoping that he'll be available for a much smaller fee.

In a recent interview with the Daily Star, ex-Red Jason McAteer bemoaned Liverpool's failure to sign Falcao, and insisted that the club should've 'done everything possible' to sign him. He explained:

"I'd have gone out and broken the bank to buy him. I'd have gambled on him to get us back in the Champions League and used the £25m you get for that on funding the deal."

Fit and on-form, Falcao is undoubtedly one of the world's best strikers, but spending €50m on a player with cruciate ligament injury in his recent past would've been, in my view, irresponsible transfer spending.

Signing Falcao outright would've been a huge gamble, but at a cost of £16m. Balotelli is arguable a bigger gamble, and if he leaves at the end of the season, he'll end up being less cost-effective than Falcao.

Falcao - hailed this month by Juan Mata as 'outstanding - is clearly better for for Liverpool's system than Balotelli - the Colombian is a workhorse, and is always on the move, whereas Balotelli is a little static at times, and doesn't really get in behind defenders.

The prevailing view seems to be that Falcao is underperforming for Manchester United, but with 6 goals/assists in 13 league games (goal/assist every 2.1 games), that's clearly nonsense. The Colombian is outperforming Balotelli, Borini, and Lambert, so if he's a failure, what does that make those three LFC players?

Last week, Falcao's agent cast doubt on the striker's Old Trafford future, when he told reporters:

"We don’t know what will happen. What we do know is that he will play for one of the very best clubs in the world next season, whether that is Manchester United or not. I am 100 per cent sure of that"

Should Liverpool pursue Falcao in the summer?

  1. There is no point in this rumour if he is worth having United will snap him up if he is not then we would be crazy to waste a penny on him simple.

  2. This was an ideal situation for him and Monaco: get to play for a well recognised club in a top league and be afforded time to prove his fitness and re-establish himself as a quality striker. United were happy to pay for his wages and whatever absurd loan fee was asked. Really it was a remarkable deal. Who on earth pays over 10 million pounds for just one season of a player who isn't even fit to start? It's easy to see in hindsight that he is a better option than Mario but even still he's not exactly setting the pitch on fire with his goal scoring. Liverpool would have been sensible to pursue him but I don't think any of us were particularly upset when he didn't come. It was always a bit of a 50/50 deal in terms of value for money.

He'll have plenty of admirers in the summer. Now that he's fit he's showing what he's capable of. He's working hard and soon enough he'll get some of his touch back, start converting the chances. By the time the season finishes he'll be in good form and ready to sell to the highest bidder. But 40 million plus for a guy who will be 29 in a couple of weeks? No chance. Maybe there are some clubs out there willing to throw around stupid money to sign him but if he goes for more than 30 million then it's a bit of a joke. Van Persie went for 22.5 million when he'd just had his best ever season for Arsenal. If the actual fee ends up a shade over 20 million then maybe Liverpool would go for him but otherwise I'd be happy enough if they just left him alone.

  3. Although you couldn't really argue with the fact that that Falcao would be better suited to us than Balotelli and would likely have a greater impact, fincancially Balotelli was still the more sensible signing and i dont agree that Balotelli was the less cost-efective option. We dont know how much we would get for Balotelli, but we will get some fee as he is our player, whereas spending that money for Falcao to just return to Monaco to sell on would not have benefitted us financially, Not to mention the outrageously high waged Falcao would have been paid.

  4. Should have bought Bony . to late now ,
Rather break the bank for Alexandra Lacazette

  5. Indeed. Balotelli is also 24 and if he does actually start to come good as a player maybe Liverpool will hang on to him. That could mean a solid 6 years or more of service to the club. Alternatively he can be sold for 10-15 million and it won't be a massive loss. If Falcao came next season and simply didn't work then it would be all the money down the toilet, he's just doesn't have that many years left in him. Mario at least has the potential to still change and improve and learn. Liverpool now have the luxury of giving him time to adapt while not having spent an obscene amount of money on him.

  9. he may have better stats than our strikers, but whats his wages? i read somewhere thats its 260k a week and for that amount of money i think the fans are right to expect more... Also the rumours about his knee being dodgy dont seem to want to go away and you got the feeling with falcao that he is one game away from another serious injury! Like has been said many times rather break the bank for someone like lacazette, dyabala or pietto (the villareal striker not sure how to spell his name) but falcao for us? no thanks

  13. Gosh, go for it! He seems perfect for LFC; pace, guile and looks hard working. Not 50 mill though.... maybe 25-35 tops, plus a free "I got out of ManU" t-shirt.

  14. He's a good player but the cost of bringing him to Anfield when you consider his age and injury history is too much IMO

  16. I am allergic to handsome millionaires approaching the end of youth with bleached teeth, alice bands, and plastic knees. Maybe it's because I was raised Catholic. I don't know. Lacazette or bust!

  18. I can't say I blame LFC for not signing Falcao.

With FFP questioning, it wouldn't be a prudent financial move.

  19. I'd be inclined to say it wasn't a penalty.

He was laying on the ground and the ball just so happen to hit his hand. He didn't seem to be trying to alter the path of the ball.

I didn't feel aggrieved that it wasn't called. I guess that's the way I look at it.

  20. Your opinion M8 ........ I personally think from past remarks JM has made , not only those before the game , JM is genuine in his respect for Stevie .
As I said it just shows Chelski fans up for what they are !

  21. As Jaimie said 'Nothing has been achieved yet ' BUT there are steps in the right direction . Let's just wait and see where we are at the end of the season when BR will be judged and how much of the money was well spent . I guess a big part of things at the moment is the Gerrard factor and the motivation for him to go out on a high ......... WE GO AGAIN !

  24. I still like berahino guys i think him and sturridge would be electric together wait untill summer get him for ten mill and wages will be quiet llow compared to falcao or lacazett,s wages sturidge has been around for a long time even though he is relatively young in football ing terrms, so he could leed the way for a really young raw tallent like berahino

  25. Glen entirely agree with you Bony was there for the taking even before Swansea....once again down to Rodgers and the dreaded transfer committee. This guy waste money on average players.
