TMW Exclusive: LFC close to signing Argentina World Cup 'weapon'. Transfer talks ongoing

Who will be Liverpool's next goalkeeper? The Reds have reportedly agreed a £3m deal to sign Mexico star Guillermo Ochoa, but according to an exclusive in Italy today, Sampdoria'weapon' Sergio Romero is top of LFC's 'keeper wishlist.

According to an exclusive report today in Italian newspaper Tutto Mercato:

* Liverpool are getting 'closer' to sealing a deal for Romero.

* The Reds are in 'ongoing contact' with the Argentina star's agent, Mino Raiola.

* January transfer is a 'distinct possibility'.

This follows a report in November from the same source, which claimed that:

* Romero wants a move to the Premier League, and:
* He is Brendan Rodgers' first-choice target.

Liverpool were first linked with Romero over the summer, and at time, Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri claimed:

Romero's Stats (Last two clubs)

AZ Alkmaar: 111 goals conceded in 112 games (0.9 per game): 48 clean sheets.
Sampdoria: 76 goals conceded in 72 games (1.05 per game): 25 clean sheets.
TOTALS: 187 goals conceded in 184 games (1.05 per game): 73 clean sheets (40%)

Romero's stats are far superior to Mignolet, who averages 1.4 goals per game (over the last three seasons), and Ochoa, who concedes 1.6 goals per game at Ajaccio.

Despite Romero's status as Argentina's number one, though, he doesn't seem to be in demand, and is seemingly surplus to requirements at Sampdoria.

At the age of 27, the Argentine is entering his prime years, and as a mainstay for one of the world's top national teams, you'd think there'd be clubs queuing up to sign him.

In that regard, Romero is similar to Ochoa, another top-class international 'stopper who is also constantly ignored by top clubs.

Is this something to be concerned about? Hopefully not, but there must be something that stops the likes of Romero and Ochoa being attractive to the world's top teams.

Whatever the reason, Romero is clearly a more effective goalkeeper than Mignolet, and he's eminently affordable, which means the financial risk is minimal.

  1. Can he catch crosses?

  2. I don't think Romero is the answer. You'd always fancy him to fuck something up.

  3. I am slightly more enthusiastic about Romero than Ochoa. But as Mike says just below: it's all about dealing with crosses, corners and free kicks. Mignolet is a solid shot stopper but we suffer when balls come into the box.

  4. Why do we seem to be chasing keepers who cant get games at lesser clubs.

  5. Yeah thats cool man, not having a go at all, just trying to see your reasoning. Personally I dont use the 'net spend' as an all absolving excuse for him, I just think that he's probably been our best manager for a long while in terms of the transfer market. Remember though, that those 4 later years were without much by way of funds, and it was around the time that the other clubs were flush with cash and willing to spend it, not to mention the garbage that was surrounding the club.
Side Note #1: He did buy Josemi though, that's unforgivable.

  6. One valid question, does Romero or Ochoa speak English? What language are they are going to use to commend the defenders in front of them?

We already have Alberto Moreno and Manquillo which I doubt understand everything that's going on the filed (nevertheless BR said he "speaks" Spanish and wants to manage in Spain one day - hopefully this day comes soon). With all the mess in the club, getting a Spanish speaking/Non-English Speaking goalkeeper will be something that will make more headlines.

I honestly think we need to just buy two top players
atop goalkeeper and a top striker

    .............................................Sterling
    ...................................Coutinho............Lallana
    Markovic/Moreno.........Lucas................Gerrard/Can...........Henderson
    .............................Lovren/Sakho.......Skrtel.........Toure/Johnson
    .................................................Mignolet/Jones

This looks our best bet till we can buy a striker ,

Sterlings pace , skill, acceleration, movement create problems that lambert and balotelli dont this in turn makes our play more fluid we created chances vs man utd now bouremouth

Only way of getting Coutinho and Lallana both on the same pitch , like how utd fit Rooney and Mata

only problem might be cbs there are gaps because theese cbs dont ahve pace like jones ,smalling, rojo

  9. We can't defend with 4 defenders and with 3 will be real fiasco. Nevermind when was the last time BR did in-game tactical change that turned a game around and won us points? Can't remember one...

  10. As a stopgap option this makes good sense. We're not going to land a top keeper in January, that much is certain, so the next option is a relatively cheap, experienced one. Of the three names turning in the rumour mill at the moment, Cech is, for me, the best option, but also possibly the least likely. That said, Chelsea seem to have no problem selling their stars, Mata comes to mind.

  11. We need a new keeper so we are going to be linked with everyone whether they are available or not or whether they are good or not or whether they are even a goalkeeper or still playing football or not.

  12. Your demands are getting more and more reasonable. Soon you're settle for a nice cup of tea and a couple of digestives ;-)

  14. After watching new comedy double act Simon and Brad take it in turns to perform slapstick routines to rival the great Buster Keaton in the Liverpool goal, my nan (nickname 'purple crone') says she will take on the role for the price of one packet of biscuits, per week.

  15. I was going to say the same thing. The risk at actually scoring three goals for a change is that we start believing that things are looking better. We weren't that good at all last night and on the backfoot for the final 30 minutes. Jones fumbled Gosling's shot which I'm pretty sure Mignolet would have had. But besides that Sakho was ball watching again before the ball even got to Gosling and it was a championship side we were playing. At 3-1 we should have pressed for a fourth not sit back and defend our lead. I liked the lineup though. At least it looks like Rodgers is trying something different to force a change.

  16. The way I see it, we need someone on loan for the remainder of the season. I would check with Fulham for Stekelenburg. I'm pretty sure he'd like to cut his loan move to Monaco short because he's not playing there. He's a solid keeper, can handle high balls into his box and a good shot stopper with experience. He'd calm down our defense. We can always look for a long term solution in the summer. Personally I'd go for Torres (yes I said it) and Stekelenburg on loan and spend on Schneiderlin. If we play last nights formation we could line up: Stekelenburg; Touré Skrtel Lovren; Schneiderlin; Markovic Gerrard Henderson Lallana; Sterling Torres. We could swap Henderson or Gerrard for Coutinho but I choose Henderson because he can burst into the box through the middlle.

  17. agreed, this team would look much better.

  18. If we are going for somebody on the cheap what about Mcarthy at QPR, he produced one of the best goalkeeping performances I've ever seen a couple of years ago against and I think we could get him for a decent price. The two already mentioned are not good enough for us.

  19. We're not made of money you know
    .
I expect Brendan to leave a note for his successor saying "there's no money left"

What about the Ajax goalkeeper who cant save penalties but played in the semi final ?
Ajax are a passing team so he should be good enough in his distrubution

or cant we loan Stegern from Barcaloena to help him develop

  22. Cech or Lloris.

  23. What was our formation last night, couldn-t watch it?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Three at the back, Hendo and Marko as wing-backs, Lucas and Gerrard in the middle, Lallana and Coutinho floating around Sterling who was probably nine-and-a-half.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Cheers.. We played well, am I right?

    ReplyDelete
  26. I couldn't watch it either.

    ReplyDelete
  27. yes against a championship team not a champions league team!

    ReplyDelete
  28. If I am not wrong, McCarthy is a second choice GK for QPR?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Currently, Borini is better than Torres and cheaper (wages) too.

    ReplyDelete
  30. So playing well doesnt matter?

    ReplyDelete
  31. AH, loved those chocolate digestives during my stay at UK.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Not for me, especially not against Championship side. I would like to see if we can replicate it against Arsenal.

    ReplyDelete
  33. So hairstyle is really the key for success....

    ReplyDelete
  34. It's called the Reverse Samson

    ReplyDelete
  35. It is Lallana too, we are on fire...

    ReplyDelete
  36. Pass from Markovic for first goal was excellent - playing 3 at the back looks cheek clenching at times- against a perm team the result would've been different- they missed 3 good chances. Going forward we looked great but that pesky defending again

    ReplyDelete
  37. Saw the highlights, too many clear cut chances for them... Lazar is showing whz he was bought...

    ReplyDelete
  38. Boas confirmed he held talks with Liverpool?!?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Looks like he's had his fringe cut but dammit Lazar get the shavers out

    ReplyDelete
  40. That wasnt held for approval?!?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Well we would need an additional striker for the squad anyway. Balotelli and Borini as our only option is a bit thin or do you feel comfortable relying on Sturrigde to play a lot this season?

    ReplyDelete
  42. It was. It was subsequently approved.

    ReplyDelete
  43. You fight the good fight :)

  44. Winner .v. Loser

Rafa has just won the Italian Super Cup (Gonzo Superb), trophy number 12, how many has Buck won again?

Bring him back, he is a WINNER, he WILL sort out the defence, he will make us compete, he will get the best out of Steven Gerrard (who is continuously derided by MANY idiots on here)

  45. Trophy number 12 ...
