Last season, Spanish newspaper Marca claimed that Liverpool were preparing a 'formal offer' for Porto goal-machine Jackson Martinez, a bid contingent - at that time - on the transfer of Luis Suarez. Since that time, Suarez has left Anfield, and despite the arrival of Mario Balotelli, there's still major room for improvement at the top end of the field. Well, it appears that Martinez is trying engineer a move away, which could be great news for the Reds.
According to reports in Portugal today:
* £40m-rated Martinez wants out of Porto after growing 'tired' of the Portuguese league.
* The Colombian striker wants to leave during the January transfer window.
LFC have been linked with Martinez many times over last year, and prior to joining Porto, the Colombian striker confirmed Liverpool's interest. He told Nuevo Estadio:
"I am not in any advanced negotiations with Liverpool but I know they are personally interested"
When asked earlier this year about his future, Martinez told El Tiempp:
“That opportunity [to leave] may be given. It would be nice to play for another big team like Porto. I like the England, Italy, Spain and Germany leagues. I have no preference.”
Since arriving at the Estádio do Dragão, Martinez - described by Porto boss Julen Lopetegui as a 'miracle' striker - has racked up some formidable creative stats:
* 69 goals/5 assist in 101 appearances.
* Once scored in 10 successive games for Porto.
* At one point, scored 18 goals in 17 games.
* Broke Falcao's record by scoring 11 goals in 12 matches for Porto.
Liverpool could've signed Martinez in 2011 for a hell of a lot less than €40m. The Reds were constantly linked with the Colombian striker prior to his move, but as usual, the club just didn't act, and he ended up at Porto for a ridiculously low fee of €11m (!)
Liverpool have reportedly agreed a €50m deal for Real Madrid star Karim Benzema, but if the club is going to spend that level of cash on a single player, I'd prefer Martinez (or the ideal: Higuain).
That said, can Martinez and Daniel Sturridge operate effectively in the same team? Both are most effective playing as central strikers, and may be too similar in terms of playing style/runs etc to work together.
It's probably all moot anyway, as Martinez seems to favour a move to Arsenal. In January, he revealed that he 'won't hesitate' to accept a move to Arsenal, adding:
"I cheered for Arsenal when I was a kid – I love their style of play. It’s flowing and open with a lot of first touch passes. It would be suitable for a player like me"
Still, money talks, and if the Reds go in with the right offer, anything is possible.

Which Mexican striker wants to leave in the January transfer window?
ReplyDeleteNot too sure about him. He is ok I guess, we already have 5 strikers...we will need to ship out few first.
ReplyDeleteFAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He's not even Mexican
ReplyDelete...because what one exclamation point can't do, forty can.
ReplyDeleteColombian who came from Mexican league?
ReplyDeleteIn the article it says "the Mexican striker". It also says he "wants out of Benfica".
ReplyDeleteAll paper talk .owners won't continue to bankroll Rogers ,if the current squad are all his buys then let's see what he can do. The managers record in market is appalling and recent buys don't change that.is markovic any better than assaidi. All players have levels where they can perform to their best ability.either Rogers or this so called committee can't identify them that's the problem. One question we keep on being told of player development.last time we made a profit on a player except for Torres Alonso masscherano and Suarez. A hell of a lot of money has been spent on average players who other clubs dont rate as lfc have given them more than they are worth and are reluctant ,the list is endless .the club policy seems to be sell to whoever for whatever ,loan or not just to get them out of door.then repeat with another crop of players, I could go on all night.
ReplyDeleteI'm literally terrified right now.
ReplyDeleteThe last time a Kaiser got this excited, it didn't end well.
Martinez would be a welcome addition, but not for the money Porto would want.
ReplyDeleteI reckon De Laurentiis would be quite willing to do business for Higuaín, given Napoli's Champions League exit and the lack of ambition shown in the summer. He'd probably fancy having a decent transfer kitty for when he gets rid of Rafa.
I know, I was just confirming that if my memory serves right, Martinez (Colombian) came to Europe from a Mexican League.
ReplyDeleteDon't exaggerate! It was closer to like 17 exclamation points.
ReplyDeleteJaimie is quoting the paper there I believe... he states it correctly later.
ReplyDeleteBalotelli will do much better if he was not asked to play upfront on his own. Still cannot understand how Rodgers thinks one upfront is going to do anything for us when it has done absolutely bugger all every time. this season.
ReplyDeleteIf Rodgers does not change formation and tactics then WBA are going to have a field day. End of.
martinez never palyed for benfica and is not mexican
ReplyDeleteI would do it age dont matter drogba scored 31 goals at the age of 30
ReplyDeletevan persie is still scoring goals at the age of 31
so we should sign him he looks to go forward and thats good
sturridge is too injury prone and origi will prosper next year by having less pressure on him
...................................................sturridge.........martinez
..................................................................sterling
..........................................lallana...............................henderson
..............................................................schniderlin
looks a good attack
higuain is another balotelli
ReplyDeletelazy and slow
yes tommorow is a 3:00 game on satuarday my favorite i hate playing agmes at 5:30 or on sundays
ReplyDeletemonday night football is the worst though i hope we never play Monday night football again this season
Rafa only has a two year contract with Napoli which ends at the end of this season and have had a very bad start to their season too. If Rafa does not make CL footie then he will be sent packing.
ReplyDeleteWhen will you ever learn he's not called schniderlin?
ReplyDelete.......................................................balotelli
ReplyDeletelallana.............................................sterling......................markovic
...............................................gerrard..........henderson
moreno...................................lovren.............skrtel.............manquillo
......................................................mignolet
bench: sturridge,lambert,coutinho,lucas,enrique,toure,jones
the same side we played vs everton consistency is key we keep chopping and changing and thats the problem let the players get used to each other and the new system
thats why last season we done well rodgers had no choice but to play same team and this is what he should do again
do you like the attack ?
ReplyDeletei think chelseas main man is matic and i think morgan schneiderlin can be our matic
martinez can be our diego costa
Play Coutinho instead of Markovic with the diamond and I think we can cause some problems.
ReplyDeleteThis formation 4-2-3-1 has done sweet blue f****** all for us this season and needs to scrapped straight away.
ReplyDeletediamond will only work if we have two top strikers
ReplyDeleteright now with stuzza still recovering and balo yet to get running we have 0
when we play diamond without allen teams just destroy gerrard
never play diamond without allen
I think Lallana can do the job of Allen. I know people say that Sterling has not been played as a striker but why not try it. It is not as if other systems are doing anything.
ReplyDeletelike i told sidlfc we have no alternative
ReplyDeletewe cant play diamond without joe
if you think it is 433
4231 and 433 are pretty much the same
mourinho played that formation last season and almost won the league
the chief culprit is simon mignolet as gary nevile said he should ahve stood up then jagielka would not score we would have 3 points different mood
i have seen lallana try defending he is awful he gets brushed aside way too easilyand his tracking back is johnson style
ReplyDeleteplus he currently is our most threatening attacker
and that should be his main concern
Mourinho had a world class defence and great cover for the defence so he could afford to do it. When we do it, we just concede.
ReplyDeleteLallana and coutinho can play alongside Henderson in the diamond. Coutinho played alongside Henderson in the diamond last season on occasion and it worked.
ReplyDeleteSimon Mignolet is a scapegoat. Our defence is sh!te and our midfield provides f*** all.
The only way we will start winning is by scoring goals and fact of the matter is that 4-2-3-1 is doing nothing for our attack. absolutely nothing ynless you want to prove me wrong.
coutinho played in the diamond once in the allen position
ReplyDeleteit was vs city it worked first half but then pellegrini sussed us out and we could ahve conceded 5 in 35 mins luckily we got away with 2
you cant leave gerrard by himself in a cdm position
maybe someone like morgan schniederlin could do the job but not gerrard
the gerrard allen partnership is beautiful though and we need allen so much
also rodgers is running out of time
ReplyDeletewe dont want to be like newcastle keeping alan pardew on the basis of one season of over achievement
right now is the time to stop theese experiments
the last three managers:
roy hodgson- never won anything in the top 7 divisions apart from inter he only managed small teams
kenny daglish- came back after 10 years out
brendan rodgers- a young manger from swansea who never won anything
how about a massive name like jupp heyckens ?
i can understand fsg policy of signing young players but you dont need a young manager its not like they lose any value and most mangers are there for three years at most
because we need practiceat it
ReplyDeletechelsea conceded 3 vs sunderland at the early part of last season
Diamond, two ahead of Gerrard or whatever you want. Coutinho played alongside henderspon more than once last season and it worked.
ReplyDelete4-2-3-1 is not working. It is a matter of fact.
I'm back to see if my posts are still being screened let's see shall we.
ReplyDeleteI wont to know why everyone here unlike on other forums are not giving Markovic pelters?
He refuses in the Prem and CL to attack players, he misses open goals doesn't create space or assists...yet I see that again some are encouraging his selection.
Based on what I ask?
How on Earth can Jordan Ibe be loaned to Derby while Markovic is being selected ?
I keep coming back to the same thing I see time and time again with Liverpool Managers from Rafa to Dalglish.
That is they insist on playing players they BOUGHT over the players that have shown FORM.
Why is SUSO not being given a chance?
Answer..Because Brendan didn't buy him and he spent a lot of money on players who he MUST justify.
This is where Mourinho, Guardiola are in a class of their own.
They DON'T CARE if the player is of there creation or not and will play the best for the TEAM. NOT to justify there own poor purchases.
No one expected all of the summer signings to be world beaters but a better than 50% return would be expected.
Brendan has to show pragmatism he must show common sense.
We must also accept that Brendan is learning as he goes as well as he's never Managed a team at this level.
He's never been in the Champions League, he's young too and will make mistakes.
What I think would really HELP him right now is a Mentor.
Someone whose Managed Liverpool at the highest Level and has his respect.
Someone whose familiar with LFC.
It's obvious Brendan has to learn fast but I think he could do with some help.
You are in the same mindset as Rodgers at the moment. The same mindset that has proved thaty one upfront is not going to win us matches especially with an INEPT defence.
ReplyDeleteGo 4-2-3-1 vs WBA and we will be taken to the cleaners. Watch this space.
one up front?
ReplyDeleteliverpool have 4 strikers
sturridge,balotelli,lambert,borini
stuzza is injured almbert is balotellis english twin while borini is sunderland quality not lfc
if rodgers had falcao or van persie he would paly two up front but due to lack of personal its not possible
Yeah. I think he played for Tigres (from memory).
ReplyDeleteYep, the suggestions on the Calcio grapevine are that unless Napoli totally bomb this season, Rafa will see out his contract and then go.
ReplyDeletei ahve criticized markovic but no way can we put a judgement on a player after 3 pl games , as henderson proved not all players hit the ground running he deserves time especially with his age
ReplyDeleteibe needs to develop with game time if sturridge did not get injured even markovic would not play rodgers could not guarantee ibe time
and he needs it more with markovic as he has only played in rookie level all his life while markovic has experience in cl, plus ibe did not take his chance in the pre season freindly vs roma that game he was moses
ibe will come back a better player
suso is not good enough hats why not one team came in for him
from spain he is too slow to ever play for rodgers as well
rodgesr will get sacked soon 100% and jupp heyckens will get the job
He's not that quick but he's not lazy either.
ReplyDeleteIt'd be interesting to see how Icardi develops. Could be a good option if he continues to progress and the sideshow that follows him subsides.
It is not about who we have as strikers. It is about the system we are currently playing.
ReplyDeleteBalotelli up on his own CLEARLY is not working so why the f*** would you want to PERSIST with Balotelli upfront on his own?
If we are not going to score goals then our defence will loose us the matches.
Solution = score goals and unfortunately 4-2-3-1 is not going to provide goals. Prove me wrong.
I don't see how bringing in a 69 year old retired manager who's never managed in England will be a sound long-term replacement to Rodgers.
ReplyDeletepace with a bit of zip is what we need
ReplyDeleteim sick of slow strikers like balotelli, crouch, carroll
suarez was an exception he had too much zip
Higuaín isn't slow. He isn't quick either but he isn't a great deal slower than Suarez. Suarez probably bets him on acceleration.
ReplyDeleteI'd prefer a quick striker. When given the choice between speed and no speed, there isn't really a choice, but which quality pacy striker could we sign in January?
we played one game with two up front
ReplyDeletevs west ham
and our midfield was destroyed the worst performance from liverpool since that loss to blackburn under roy at anfield
why because we had no strikers that worry west ham so they advanced further and with the extra man we lost in midfield and higher line they
murdered liverpool
if we had sturridge and allen different strory
we drew with everton we would have lsot if we played two up front
what is a long term replacement ?
ReplyDeletedo chelsea , man city,real madrid ,
think about long term replacements
we need a man for two season then again and again like chelsea do and dont give me excuse chelsea are better we spend almost as much as them
luciano vietto
ReplyDeletedubbed the new augero plays for villereal now
with state of spanish football can see us getting him for 20m
I really do like Rodgers but think he has been possessed by some evil. He just does not want to see that his complete change in style of play this season is not going to benefit us in any shape or form.
ReplyDeleteHe has spent a load of cash this season and surely there should have been some guarantees of another title challenge. As we know, FSG are ruthless so hopefully Rodgers wakes up and smells the coffee otherwise he may not be managing LFC next season.
You've named two sides that went on unprecedented spending sprees to establish themselves and another side which has broken the transfer record 4 times since 2000.
ReplyDeleteDo you not see how our situation might be a bit different?
We would not have lost if we played two upfront vs Everton. We drew beacuse we were sitting back defending a one goal lead. The match could have been over in the first half.
ReplyDeleteIt's absolutely fair that questions are asked, but I think people are just getting carried away in the short term.
ReplyDeleteAt the very least I want to see until Rodgers has his new signings and key players fit and up to speed before we judge.
No doubt that Rodgers hasn't done an impressive job so far this season.
no your basing your opinion on the fact of some
ReplyDeletefake thing s like we should
"one striker up front dont work"
"we should never play two holding mids"
"raheem sterling is a striker"
"we should always play diamond"
when infact it would make no difference
as liverpool embark on a transitional period after their biggest ever transfer window
i want rodgers sacked because he never won anything not because i think i know better then him which me and you dont
so why did man utd sign van gaal a 63 year old?
ReplyDeleteDo not get me wrong, I am not and have not once called for his head but if he cannot see that what he is doing at the moment is damaging our season the FSG are not going to hold back. It is the plain and simple truth.
ReplyDeleteyou cant make assumptions like that
ReplyDeleteas everton would then have more possesion and maybe more goal scoring oppertunaties with the extra man
You still cannot prove how 4-2-3-1 has done any good for us this season. Prove it or keep on making excuses.
ReplyDeleteYou mean Man United who have spent about £200m in the past three transfer windows?
ReplyDeleteSee above.
I understand where you are coming from, I'm talking more about the premature "Rodgers out" brigade.
ReplyDeletehave you ever though of giving the players time to learn the system
ReplyDeleteplus alot of the time this season we are playing 433 not 4321 or we playing 451
are you watching a different team by any chance?
please daglish spent 100m in a window
ReplyDeleterodgers 120m
we spend money but not responsibly
because no good player wants to join us because of our manager
not a coincidence maoyes could only sign fellani then van gaal sign di maria
Moyes also signed Mata.
ReplyDeleteDalglish bought Suarez.
Rodgers bought Sturridge.
Dalglish never spent £100m in a window. He did it in 2 windows, funded largely by the sale of the club's best player.
Rodgers did the same.
United lost a load of old cloggers and are paying about £20m to have Falcao for one year. Between Falcao, Di Maria, Rooney and RVP, they're spending about £1.2m a week on wages. 4 players. If you took our 10 best paid players, it would probably be similar.
It's very different.
I agree that we don't spend money responsibly.
