Great News: 'Amazing' £16m Brazil star confirms Prem transfer. BR wants him. LFC-bound?

With the arrival of Javier Manquillo and Alberto Moreno, Liverpool's full-back positions are no longer an urgent transfer priority, but with Glen Johnson recently hinting at a January exit, Reds boss Brendan Rodgers reportedly has his eye on Dani Alves as a potential replacement, and the Brazil star has emphatically confirmed that he's heading for the Premier League.

In September, multiple reports claimed that:

* Brendan Rodgers wants to sign £16m-rated Barcelona star Dani Alves on a 'short-term deal' next season.

* Manchester United also want the Brazilian, recently hailed by Barca right back Martin Montoya as the 'best full-back in the world'.

Soon after, Barca confirmed Alves' exit, with the following statement:

"We are delighted that Dani is here, and with the performance he has provided for the club. Both sides have reached an agreement though that his contract will end in 2015"

When asked about his future last night, 'amazing' Alves told reporters:

“Next year I'm moving to England. I'm going to play at the home of football. This will be my last season at Barcelona.”

Liverpool have been linked with Alves many times in the past, and Rafa Benitez tried to sign the Brazilian back in 2008. In a 2012 interview with Sports Illustrated, Benitez explained:

"Daniel Alves was our first option on the right side. The problem that we had was that I had to decide to bring Alves as a winger when he was an offensive full-back"

The irony here is that if Liverpool had signed Alves back in 2008, then Johnson - the player Alves may possibly replace - may never have been signed in the first place.

So, Alves is definitely coming to England, which means Liverpool will almost certainly have a chance to compete for his signature. Is the Brazilian a significant *defensive* upgrade on Johnson, though? And will he even consider Anfield as a possible destination?

Right now, Liverpool doesn't look like an attractive destination. The club's form is pretty dire, but there's a long way to go, and if the Reds can pull things out of the fire, then things could look very different next summer.

  1. Not too sure on this one. If it was 2008 I would have driven him here myself, 6 years down the line and he's no longer the top FB he once was. Having said that he's a definite upgrade on Johnson but I think there's potential in Manquillo and with Flanagan back fit is there really room for him? Especially when you consider the wages etc... My gut instinct says no deal.

  2. Yeah, not the player he was. Not worth bringing him to the Prem at his age (not for us, anyway). Sometimes I think people don't realise how good he was under Pep. Had such a superb understanding with Messi in particular.

Even now, I think Barca will miss him when he leaves. Can't see who they'd replace him with.

  3. I would love to see Alves at Liverpool as mentor for Flanno and Manquillo.
With the exception of Bergkemp, I can't think of a player with a better first touch than Dani Alves. Always been a big fan. Granted he's not what he was but he still oozes class

when did i ask for your advice?

  6. For a decent fee, definitely yes- he would show our youngsters exactly how an attacking full back should operate, and mean that Johnson can definitely go for a smaller, but not too dissimilar fee to another club like QPR- positive move under those circumstances..

  7. How much are you willing to bet that you're right?
With me, right now. Name your price.

  13. just what we need another righback when we already have three and wisdom on loan .....we need a goalie a Dm and another striker ideally one with pace before we waste money on covered positions

  14. You are manipulating the rules of the website to persistently subject everyone to ridiculous, unsubstantiated, repetitive statements. I often think you do it on purpose just for the reaction from people, hoping Jaimie will back you up because of his strict comments policy.
You may not say offensive things that would be deleted but you only have to look at the reaction you get to almost every post to know that you're irritating people and I really can't understand what motivates you

  15. Of course we're all entited to moan and we've got some reason to moan too. The problem is with some of the more extreme doom and gloom sack everyone type of comments.

  16. "Better then Markovic". You don't have to be that good to be better then our waste of money and latest flop signing.

  17. I think you should have gone to specsavers...

  18. Talk of sacking BR is ludicrous at this stage. The good man will be judged at the end of the season. God forbid we are in trouble at Christmas as make no mistake mr Henry will act in the best interest for their investment and the club. I hope it comes together soon. The cohesion and quick accurate passing is completely missing, we are misfiring but I strongly believe that we will fire on all cylinders very soon. A lot of new players who aren't on the same page yet is clearly showing. Hope Studge is back soon. Good luck lads. YNWA

  19. Alves would be a great only as a starter in big games for 2 years whilst a mentor for Flanno and Manquillo who we have already invested in! I would forget Wisdom. What I have seen so far I don't know if he will crack our lineup unless they given him a shot at CB........

    ReplyDelete
  20. Totally agree mate. Wisdom will never be the kind of fullback Rodgers wants. His only crack is at centre half but I'm not sure if we'll see him back at Liverpool

    ReplyDelete
  21. Ohhhhhh wowwwww! I can't believe I forgot about that! Thanks Greg, your insight has truly enlightened the subject once again! Did I once say that BR should play him against WBA? Your sniping is getting boring Greg, so far you've come up with "wah wah Markovic is one year older than you said" and "wah wah Ibe is on loan, so dont talk about him or his possible future opportunities". Why don't you just try and contribute, put in some decent comments that would encourage either positive or negative commentary on a player, the team or the sport and promote conversation between fans of the game. Not everyone is here to post something for a troll to snipe at, that has only one purpose, which is to stifle the amount of supporters of our great club that actually want to talk about the way the season is going with other, like minded Redmen. Comments like yours are a detriment to our fanbase and create an environment where it isn't safe to comment, analyse or even worse, share opinion, lest they have a slightly different view to the resident bridge-dwelling, toll-demanding, billygoat-munching troll. Be mature, and who knows, this site may one day be a place where true fans of our amazing club can just chat as if amongst friends, growing our community and creating a fanbase that people want to belong to. 22. So much anger. Before i go on, your description of Markovic was 'not good'. That was all. From then on, your comment becomes difficult to read, but I'll give it a go in the interest of good banter. Salvio is one of these players I've not been impressed with, but thats but my opinion. I also wasn't impressed with Sturridge before we got him, or Henderson even after we got him, but they have proved me very wrong. I was stating that for that kind of money, we'd be better off going for the likes of Reus, or one of the other frequently mentioned superstars. Would we necessarily get them if we tried? I don't know, I'm not BR or one of his associates. Just saying I'd like one of those as opposed to Salvio, whom I don't beleive would be worth anything north of about 15m. Totally agree with you on the Portugese pricing, I dont know how they get away with it, but as long as the big boys keep paying, they'll keep charging. I stand by my opinion on him being a slight upgrade on Fabio, from what I've seen (which is only a handful of games) I'm pretty confident in my assertion. I would love to know where this 'slaying' occurs though, ad if I offended, I do apologise. I was more having a go at the logic behind swapping a player who we signed for 20m and has not been performing, therefore negatively affecting their value in the market, being offered as a straight swap for someone who is valued by their club (not necessarily the rest of the world) at £34m. It just doesnt make sense to me, but I may be misreading it. And finally, please stop asking me to research or insisting that I don't know what I'm talking about, because all I'm saying is opinion. I dont think Salvio is an upgrade on our attacking midfielders, but if you do, thats cool man. Peace, YNWA

  30. Dude chill out, I wasn't attacking you, just suggesting that you put more thought into your posts. If you back up your statements rather than just poke at players, people actually consider it and it might encourage conversation. I totally respect that you probably have been reading the comments here longer than me, that's cool, I'm just trying to help push the conversation to educated and rounded conversation. I realise it probably looks like I'm attacking your posts but honestly they just stood out to me. I'll avoid doing so and I apologise for any offense, we're all on the same team here. And yeah, Peace. YNWA

  31. Ok the message was brief i like it like that often it gets a point across often people know the why and how which is why i dont bother to back up my point.
The posters on here are generally knowledgeable and a few of us like a shot at humour too, and often dont need long winded stories thats ok though now we start fresh.
