Arsenal hero blasts: Ref should've sent off 'brainless' star for 'stupid' LFC foul. Agree?

Liverpool star Mario Balotelli received some rough treatment yesterday at the hands of hacker extraordinaire Philippe Senderos, and according to Arsenal legend Alan Smith, the Swiss defender should've been sent off for brazenly kicking Balotelli during the first half of LFC's 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa.

After witnessing Senderos' blatant off-the-ball foul on Balotelli, Smith - who was co-commentating - barked:

"What a stupid kick out by Senderos. That is just brainless. Your team's a goal ahead, you're in charge, and Villa should've been down to ten men"

Viewing the incident, it's hard to argue with Smith's assessment:

The incident happened right in front of the referee, who surely must've seen (even in his peripheral vision) Balotelli go down, so why didn't he investigate when play came to a natural stop?

Senderos hassled Balotelli constantly, but that's the Premier League for you. It's arguably the most exciting league in the world, but it's it's still filled with limited hackers like Senderos, and Alan Hutton - who took out Sterling with a disgraceful assault tackle - who thrive on the (illegal) physicality of the game.

Hopefully, the FA will take retrospective action against Senderos, who is so hopelessly out of touch that he actually believes kicking people is 'part of the game'. After the match, he told reporters:

"It's things that happen on the pitch. We're running towards each other, against each other, but there's no harm in going like this."

This is damaging attitude to hold in this day and age, and Senderos needs to disciplined, or he'll continue to scythe people down and get away with it.

Kudos to Balotelli, though, for keeping his cool despite the constant provocation. In my view, he passed a small test against Villa; Senderos constantly tried to incite a reaction, and the Italian refused to take the bait, which bodes well for the future.

  1. Watching Manchester United vs QPR. Manu look very strong now with their new signings and just like I said Di Maria is playing amazing. Really sad seeing Manu playing well. Hopefully Liverpool don't drop points on Tuesday.

  2. This hassling was deliberate to get a reaction from Mario.
This is the new tactic being adopted against him due to his previous.
To his credit though Mario didn't react badly to this or the other incidents that took place.
If there is anything to be taken out of this it's Mario's reaction and from what I can see his growing maturity.
No doubt 4 years ago I suspect he would have knocked Sendoros out or chopped him in half with a tackle.

Sorry I know it's early days but saw nothing from Lallana & Markovic which will have Countinho and Sterling looking over there shoulders for starting spots.
I said it earlier that Lallana is overrated

  4. So gracious in defeat...Henderson should have walked after a vicious challenge on Cleverley.....I suspect you conveniently missed that one. Face it lads, without Suarez diving all over the place like last season you was never going to score yesterday. You have ZERO movement up front. And cut out the sentiment, its time for Gerrard to retire as he now offers very little. He's probably holding you guys back!

    ReplyDelete
  5. With the amount of Pool players diving it all ended up even in the end, you just weren't good enough.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Not sour grapes then?....you bin dippers do make me laugh. Senderos is just too hard for softee Balotelli......get over it!

    ReplyDelete
  7. He never said it was? He means that if Suarez was still an Lfc player and had committed the sort of foul Senderos had he would of had a full scale court case and a 7 game ban. The disgusting Eto'o also did something reminiscent of that the first time we played Chelsea last season. He got away sugar free.

    ReplyDelete
  8. That Softee" Balotelli could probably end your life. Anyway there is no place for immature deadbeats like yourself here. Bye son.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Liverpool should just stick to the 4-4-2 diamond. Dominate teams with that formation and they have a lot of movement upfront too.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Lol...Balotelli couldnt fight his way out of a wet paper bag...just ask
    Micah Richards lol

  11. No need to debate ANYTHING with a brain surgeon who thinks that was the sign of a hard player. My sister could have done a cowardly trip like that.
    Hard My ass.

  12. Sorry but that's been going on ever since the first ever game. And Liverpool players are not too bothered about bending the rules either.

There seem to be no mention of Henderson's horror tackle yesterday.

he might not have played yesterday but every time Liverpool defend a corner Skertel should be penalised with a penalty for his shirt-grabbing antics.

Then there the constant diving. It used to be Suarez now it Allen, although he wasn't playing yesterday the penalty he 'won' at Spurs was laughable.

Teams are simply not going to turn-up at Anfield and surrender any more, at least Villa won't. The simple truth is you were just not up to it. No movement, no idea and no penetration.

Stevie Gerrard has been a wonderful player and I would like to have 1% of his ability but he is struggling now and you need to find a new role for him in the side or use him sparingly.

You blew your chance last year, I'm afraid it's going to be a difficult season so take responsibility for your own short comings and don't try to blame the opposition.

  13. I remember similar debates from Swansea fans a couple of seasons ago after they had a couple of good games. Suddenly they were all experts on what was wrong with LFC just like this HETS joker.
The rest of the team scored 71 goals last season, my betting is that's not far from the entire output of a hell of a lot of teams, certainly Aston Villa

  14. Villa fan in peace. I actually agree Sendeross was just an idiot for doing that and deserved to be sent of. There was no need for him to do it which is why I worry about him as he always has a huge mistake in him. We were lucky to get away with it but to be fair a talentless team like ours going to Anfield against top quality players needs luck. As for Hutton he went in hard on Sterling and Sterling hardly touched the ball after that. Sterling will have to deal with that type of challenge and toughen up to it as he will get more and more of that treatment. On a down side the mancs won today hope you pip them to top four would hate to see that plastic team get it.

    ReplyDelete
  15. There has been no defending the LFC performance from a single fan that I've seen matey. In contrast there's pages of praise about how wonderful Villa fans and their manager thought they were. We know we were poor. You scored early from your only attempt on target and defended well.
teams didn't give up last year, they were blown away. We have only played like that once this year and blew Spurs away when we did. How much are you willing to put on Villa making the top 6?
    Don't get carried away.

Expect more of this later this season and judging by balotelli's lack of reaction we'll be fine.

    ReplyDelete
  21. we weren't good enough but who the hell dived ???

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yea people laugh when we talk about conspiracy against LFC but again........... another piece for the evidence collection

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'm not talking about the performance but about the video clip of Senderos and some of the comments above.

Villa did play well and perhaps should have added to the goal from their only shot on target but they did defend superbly just as Chelsea did last season.

Liverpool need to learn how to break teams down that play that way and more importantly don't expect teams to just surrender - that's why Villa have remained unbeaten at Anfield for four years.

How much would I put on Villa making top six? About a quid to be honest.

We know our limitations and are behind what Lambert is trying to achieve on a very limited budget. I'm certainly not getting carried away believe me. Al I know is that with 10 points in the bag we are a quarter of the way to what is needed for safety.

What we achieve after that will be a bonus.

We'd love a fraction of the money you have spent on players to bring in a few ourselves but it ain't going to happen any time soon.

  24. Another plastic scouse LMAO...I bet you dont even know what city Anfield is in. Your almost as bad as Manure fans. Take it like a man you super duper Mario perve lol

  25. i am a liverpool fan and I laugh at fans who cry at some conspiracy against our club. if you want to know bias try supporting a club in spain. real and barcelona can get away with so much that you cant help but feel sorry for the other clubs in the league. the only unfair edge i felt is when ferguson had the alleged reputation for intimidating match officials. dont think it is true but looking at some old man utd games you cant help but think that way. more recently the guy who in essence runs the league, scudamore, said that it hurts his "brand" when man united dont play well. rival fans have a case to allege bias there. tbh all football fans feel there is some conspiracy against their club every time some decisions go against them. all part and parcel of the game and the finger-pointing will not change. for example i read recently that liverpool are the media darlings which is why they get away without a mention when they (allegedly) dive. god almighty !!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I see the c!ck sucking of Man Utd has started again because they beat QPR. Remember Spurs did the same and then we tanked them. It is not about the fall but how you react from it. Remember 3-1 Hull, 1-1 WBA. We came back and we have to do it again.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Not sure about refs and all but I am sure Roy has some vendetta against us because of how things ended and our players always seem to get injured.

  28. How old are you mate...you sound like my 3 year old grandaughter...get a life. Diving all over the pitch, biting, racism....plastic scousers, be ashamed. Your club and fans (so called fans) are a disgrace to football!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Please do not make this personal. Aston Villa deserved their win yesterday and deserve all the plaudits but you are acting as if you won the quadruple. As for plastics, I can guarantee you that every single fan on this site loves LFC with passion. Why are we a disgrace to football? Give me evidence and not just an assertion.

  30. and did you hear that he plans on sending raheem along with the other young players to play in some under 21 competition for england? talk about extracting vengeance..damn it! now im buying into this conspiracy crap as well. but on the other side it is the correct thing to do rather than throw them into the senior team.

  31. I was making a joke but yeah he does seem to have something against us. Why would he play Studge when specifically told not to?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Then why are you on our forum? Go and spout bile on your own team's website, I guess that team never had anybody ever break a rule, total angels the lot of them.
Oh, and in case you haven't heard, Suarez plays for Barca now. Guess that makes them a disgrace.
People who stereotype others in the infantile way you have just displayed are the lowest of the low. I bet I can guess exactly which rag top you read every day purporting to be a newspaper.

  34. i honestly dont know how things work between clubs and countries with regards to player handling. i was just as irked as any other liverpool fan when i heard about studge's injury. but the way some fans (and i dont mean you) go about this makes it look like roy creeps around in a ninja costume in the dark trying to snap off our players' tendons with a pair of pliers. i sincerely doubt that is the case.

  35. Old enough to know that a debate entails challenging and providing alternative arguments to points raised by others, something that you have singularly failed to do.
All I see from your responses is name calling and a total lack of genuine debate... Not unlike the toddlers you mention.

  48. Really? We're a racist institution at Liverpool are we? Tell that to our multi-cultural squad.
Kenny Dalglish's involvement in that racial row you're speaking about played a big part in him losing his job.
Suarez plays for Barca now so in what other way are we mirroring all that is wrong with society?

    ReplyDelete
  49. getting into a semantic argument with mr heits would be like explaining the theory of relativity to an octopus

    ReplyDelete
  50. As a Villa fan I would like to disassociate myself from the comments of Mr Heits. Absolutely scandalous.

My initial post was to say that what Senderos did, although wrong, has been going on as long as the game itself.

I played at a reasonable level and any player, pro or not, knows that sort of stuff happens and Liverpool players engage in it too.

At the end of the day I think Liverpool's biggest mistake, or at least the manager's, was underestimating the opposition.

Good luck in the Champions League and I have little doubt that come the final Premier League shake-up Liverpool will be there or thereabouts.

    ReplyDelete
  53. thats a pretty fair assessment but i dont think there was any malice in the hendo tackle ...maybe a touch late but cleverly actually has a very good first touch which often catches players out

    ReplyDelete

  61. you guys go on about this as assault and defended chewy Suarez repeatedly biting on the pitch. Also it was nice revenge for the disgraceful dive last year that bought you a pen and cheated us out of victory on the day.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I think Smith has played the game (just a bit) and he thought it was wrong. But I expect you know best...

    ReplyDelete
  63. I've rated Fabian Delph for the past two years & seen him grow. His Chelsea goal & that cracking shot last year was a major turning point! LFC could do with his energy!

    ReplyDelete
  64. kicking out like that and biting are both unacceptable but I agree biting is far worse - hence the heavy punishment.

That doesn't make the kicking out acceptable and it probably will also be punished but rightly much more lightly

    ReplyDelete
  65. isnt that a burger

    ReplyDelete
  66. How empty is your life that this is how you have to get your kicks...

    ReplyDelete
  67. Urban Myth no 224
LFC fans defended Suarez for biting.
Absolutely EVERY fan has a gripe about a dive, an offside, a kick etc which cheated them last year. This thread is about a particular incident, which you defend by citing a FORMER player's conduct last season.
So now your saying it's alright for defenders to do this to your players without punishment? Suarez was banned for over 16 games.
How long should Senderos be banned for? OR should he get off without punishment because another player did something and was banned and censured heavily for it?
Typical misdirection. Try answering the issue at hand

    ReplyDelete
  68. I hope one day I can suddenly kick you in the balls and then tell you that's just part of life

    ReplyDelete
  69. So Suarez = Liverpool ? All 3 of your so- called bits of evidence involve a player who isn't even there anymore.
As for society, we weren't aware of any biting issues in our society, perhaps you can enlighten us?
And I doubt you are any kind of authority re racism in the UK.. I suspect others would be able to shed far more light on that subject, and few if any would cite Suarez as being anywhere near representative of the problem.
And since Evra himself stated that he didn't consider Suarez a racist, pray tell where did you get additional evidence to proclaim him as such?

    ReplyDelete
  70. Seems some fans are desperate for a win at any costs. they have to get their 40 points for safety somehow...
Decent Villa fans will condemn him. Most, maybe all of LFC fans would condemn an LFC player if he did what Senderos did, whatever the result.
That's the difference between us and them.
    Something to celebrate, methinks

    ReplyDelete
  71. Not that blatantly it isn't.

And just because it happens doesn't make it right.

And yes, I have played the game. it's a shameful part of football which did used to be actively taught. Some players try to compensate for lack of ability with it all the time. And they will increasingly be caught and punished

    ReplyDelete
  72. Boloteli hit Senderos with his arm as he runs past him. Senderos responded to the whack with a trip. That gif doesn't show the whole event . So shut it whinging pool fans and Arse fans who don't want a full Villa side to face next week.

    ReplyDelete
  73. First of all I want to thank you for showing there is at least one Villa fan with a bit of sense and decorum.
I'm also sure that come the end of the season, Villa will be comfortably mid table or above. All the best this season mate

    ReplyDelete
  74. Furthermore, the only one that came remotely close was Lallana and he didn't even appeal for a call. He just slipped on the turf, got up and ran back.

    ReplyDelete
  75. We all played football and that behavior even though it exists is always wrong; it does not matter who did it

    ReplyDelete
  76. So are red cards and lengthy suspensions.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I don't know about the rest of the LFC fans out there, but I was really happy with the way Balo handled all of this. The tactic was clear as day from the kickoff, and that was to get that useless has-been Senderos to constantly hassle Mario until he lashed out. In truth, that viejo was playing with fire because when Mario loses his cool, he doesnt bite players, he drops them. People saying Senderos is hard? Hard players dont need to commit cowardly fouls and run away, he did the same with elbows to the back when going up for headers and was always clipping the big guys heels. Anyone arguing that 'thats a valid tactic bla bla mourinho bla bla' clearly doesnt know what makes this sport the greatest in the world. The underhanded fouls, time wasting and trying to rev up an opponent by assaulting them is NOT a valid tactic, it completely goes against the ethos of the game and should be stamped out. Mourinho even had the guile to waste time on the weekend by keeping the ball away at a throw in. These people are children and shouldnt be allowed anywhere near an organised event without parental supervision, that goes for Phil ''if I'm not fast enough to get it, I'll make sure you dont either'' Senderos too.

    ReplyDelete
  78. No doubt this is part of the way English football is played and Balotelli won't be surprised. But it's a straight red incident, no question. If the ref sees that straight on then Senderos should be off and suspended for 3 games. The league should have some ability to review incidents like that, he's gotten away with one there.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Having said all that, we lost because we didn't play well enough. I wont admit to Villa being the better side, they just weren't as bad as we were.

    ReplyDelete
  80. No, you never had a tackle like that "at school". You were never that quick and you never had a defender the size of Senderos hack at your leg. Comparing your junior football experience to the PL is laughable.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Anyone ever notice that Heits and JK are never in the same room at the same time?

    ReplyDelete
  82. A properly "hard" defender doesn't need to use their elbows, pull on a shirt or stick their foot out to trip someone. These things often happen as a matter of course and no defender needs to apologise when an attack goes down after legitimate contact, but when the only intention of an act is to interfere because they're already beaten then yeah, you're right, it's a lame act and reflects only on how poor the defender is in the first place. I think we can find a balance in the English game where physical contact still occurs and strength is important but it's not just a series of cheap shots. What Senderos did was a cheap shot, plain and simple. You don't have to be a strong or physical defender to do something like that that, you just have to stick out a leg and kick someone.

I think it's obvious enough when people are just being thugs or idiots and it's very possible to draw a line in terms of what is deemed OK and what is not. If the PL was to introduce a high standard of behaviour and simply penalise players (or coaches) in the first instance then it wouldn't be a problem. There are always appeals and cases to to be made. In this instance Senderos could have been charged and, if it turned out the evidence wasn't conclusive then he might have gotten off. I don't see what the PL gains by not examining stuff like this.

    ReplyDelete
  83. and fortunately for us, it could have been red for him early on...

    ReplyDelete
  84. First of all Suarez did do all those things and got away with on many occasions and secondly if you care to view the video with an unbiased mind it was a trip and not a kick. When will scousers stop whingeing all the while!

  85. It's a mans game, we were crap, villa had a game plan. Best team won.
lallana and Markovic = £40mill down the drain.

That made me laugh so loud......

    ReplyDelete
  87. Actually women play football too and children : -) but to be serious it can still be a man's game without unnecessary dirty play.
Agree we were not good and that Villa had a game plan.
Were they the best team? Well I suppose they were best at executing their plan but it was, perhaps understandably, a limited approach to a game.
Bit early to write off Lallana - coming back after injury and Markovic - still settling in.
    But I feel your pain.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Remembering, as I do, Suarez's 'disgraceful' dive last year to salvage 2-2 for you one can only laugh. Even Rodgers didn't bleat about the love tap Senderdross, mind your perms and dry yours eyes and face facts, you got well done by the Villa!!!

    ReplyDelete
  89. What annoys me is Garth Crooks put the thug and cheat in his team of the weak...his comments are as out of touch as Senderos..

."Philippe Senderos makes my Team of the Week for the second time this season. His performance was one of the main reasons Villa made life so difficult for Liverpool.

He gave Mario Balotelli a couple of kicks just for good measure and caused problems for Liverpool in both boxes.

Welcome back to the Premier League Mario."

  90. *week* even :)

    ReplyDelete
  91. If Ballotelli had done it to Senderos it would have been headline news on Sky and all over the papers. But hardly a word about it. Not that I am surprised. I agree completely that the FA should ban Senderos for 3 games.

    ReplyDelete
  92. I would like to know under what rule you would have sent Senderos off for? Violent conduct? Preventing a goal scoring opportunity? It was a trip. Balotelli had the run on Senderos and so just in case a Liverpool player had the vision to see it, Senderos took him out. Happens all the time. Yellow card. If you would like me to explain offside to you all let me know ;)

    ReplyDelete
  93. SHIT ON THE KOP!! SCOUSE BASTARDS!!! UTV

    ReplyDelete
  94. i was quietly hoping that balo would get angry and do a two footed lunge on Senderos an injure him. yeah, im not a nice person... but defenders like Senderos has no place in the game.

and our performance... horrible. i think this will happen again and again this season if we fall behind in games.

we play wonderfully when opponents need to open their game and attack us. but if we go a goal down and teams park a buss chelsea like (from last season) against us. we got nothing on them. 90% domination on ball without any penetration.

what was sad was that we seemed reluctant to even shoot from outside of the box, trying to probe and probe with no imagination for 70 minutes.

    it was horrible.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Senderos is just like Kevin Muscat, the game moved on without them.
Sure an over physical guy will occasionally be praised for the hard nature of their play but the game is moving away from clattering tackles, elbows and kicks.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Nearly as disgraceful as biting someone for example or maybe spitting at the opposition fans I'd say at least what senderos and Hutton have done is actually part of football unlike the biters splitters and your cb that attempts to rape every striker at corners with his shirt pulling holdin etc. if the senders incident is the only focus you have rather than the 110 mil you've wasted in the summer you really are comfused

    ReplyDelete
  97. It was silly by Senderos I completely agree, however to say it's a sending off is crazy, I would say is a yellow at most. You see players tripping players in football, however he hasn't swung for him or booted him into the air, just tripped the guy. Intentional? Yes. But malicious? No way. If u send him off for that, you need to give red cards when players square up to each other and push each other away, reds for more dangerous fouls, penalties for shirt pulling, fouls for obstruction etc. Balotelli didn't help things by lying on the floor as if he had been 2 footed, I don't think that helped the cause for Liverpool getting anything from it.

With the roughness of Balotelli, you will need to get used to that. It happenes to any hot tempered players - Rooney, Roy Keane got it, Balotelli will too as in the past he snapped very easy. But once he controls that and players realise they can't get to him, it will slow down.

Liverpool will be top 4, it's natural for players to take to time to fit in. Look at Spurs for a perfect example. The advantage you have though, is a very good manager. Really like what Liver are trying to do and can like you more now u don't have Suarez diving all over the shop ;)

    Best of luck this season.
