'LFC has contacted me': €11m Spain star confirms surprise LFC 'offer'. Next signing?

How many central defenders do Liverpool need? With SIX senior centre-backs currently on the books, the position is clearly well-covered, but it seems that Liverpool are actively trying to sign yet another centre-half.

When asked about his future last night, Borussia Moenchengladbach defender Alvaro Dominguez told reporters:

"Yes, it's true. Galatasaray and Liverpool have contacted me but I will stay with Borussia.

"I am here and I am happy. I have what I need. I have spoken to the club and they told me that I am an important player."

This follows Dominguez's comments last week, when he hinted that a move may be on the cards:

"There are still a few days until the transfer deadline, so I do not know what will happen"

Gladbach director of football Max Eberl has also confirmed that an un-named club has put in an offer for Dominguez:

"We have received an offer, but a sale would not be an issue for us. We place a great emphasis on long-term squad planning and don't suddenly panic a few days before the end of the transfer deadline"

Some info about 25-year old Dominguez, who cost Gladbach €11m in 2012:

* Spent two years at Real Madrid as a youth player.
* 26 appearances for various Spain youth teams.
* 2 apps for the Spain national team.
* Current contract expires in 2017.
* 4 years at Atletico Madrid.
* Two-time winner of the Europa League with Atletico
* Averages 40 games a season.

To be honest, at this stage, Liverpool only really have three viable options at centre-back: Skrtel, Lovren, and Sakho, with the latter clearly not trusted by Rodgers. £15m-rated Agger and Coates are on the verge of leaving the club, so signing another central defender seems to make sense.

Having said that, what about Tiago Ilori? If Rodgers wants another centre-back, why doesn't he use the Portuguese defender, who signed for £7m last summer?

What is the point of buying Ilori if he is never going to be utilised? If Manquillo and Moreno - who are both the same age (give or take a year) - can play in the first team, why can't Ilori?

  1. I think Liverpool would have contacted his representatives before signing Lovren.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Perhaps we sounded him out when the Lovren deal was stalling. I doubt very much we will buy another Cb. Not for a few windows I think. Toure is going nowhere yet so we have four this season and will have four next with Ilori coming back and Toure leaving, five if we count Wisdom.

  3. If they want another CB, fine. But as long as they buy a DM first

    ReplyDelete
  4. We need a central midfielder that box to box. Sure everyone will agree with that . couthino cant last all game Allen is Bad Gerrard getting old and cant go back after going forward .

    ReplyDelete
  5. rogers will probably play Gerrard at cb and dm at he same time .....rogers has spent about 70m so far on the defense in his tenure and its got more holes than a swiss cheese

    ReplyDelete
  6. isnt he the tremendous prospect with great speed who cant defend

    ReplyDelete
  7. If not lets get the M K Dons kid

    ReplyDelete
  8. Liverpool have needed an imposing dm who can protect the back 4 for several seasons ...masherano was ideal

    ReplyDelete
  9. for me rogers needs to have the courage of his own conviction and play the defenders he has bought or explain why he paid so much for them

    ReplyDelete
  10. This doesn't really make any sense. Maybe he means that Liverpool had contacted him at some point during the window. There is another story going around that Eder Balanta is a target, so he's not the only CB getting some press. I think the press are getting a bit desperate for stories as the window is going to close soon. Liverpool indeed have a worthy squad of CBs and brining in another would be completely pointless.

I think the suggestion that Rodgers clearly doesn't trust Sakho is overkill. Sakho will play plenty of games this year and will be first choice if someone is injured. Skrtel probably deserves to keep his place for now but that's just the nature of having a number of top class players in the squad. Skrtel and Sakho will battle for a spot next to Lovren and there will come a time when Sakho gets a consistent run of games. If Rodgers didn't trust him we wouldn't even be in the squad.

  11. It has to be more than that, he has to be able to pass the ball and set up the play. Mascherano was moved to CB at Barca because he's never had the skills to play the role needed in a team like that. When he played the role at Liverpool after Alonso left he wasn't great and we suffered as a team. He tackled well but don't you remember watching him pass the ball? It just didn't work. The way we play you can't just slot in some thug who'll make tackles and break up attacks, he has to be able to play.

    ReplyDelete
  12. in 4 3 3 when you include the full backs and not the Dm you have potentially 7 attacking players the system rogers plays means the fullbacks are effectively wing backs that means the deepest mid fielders prime responsibility is being able to cover tackle and spot danger, the team is lopside with creative players at some point you need players who can defend and win the ball back

    ReplyDelete
  13. First choice if someone is injured? lo!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Maybe the 4123 maybe the better option giving you that player that drops back to cover the back 4.

  15. There's a CB named Falcoa? Who does he play for?

    ReplyDelete
  16. I think Migs has played well to start the season.

Granted it's only two games, but he's not the reason why we struggled against Soton and he's not the reason why we couldn't score against Citeh.

If anything, he's kept us alive in both games with some nice stops (particularly against Soton)

    ReplyDelete
  17. It is difficult to add speed to a player who doesn't have it but it should be possible to improve a player's ability to defend.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Are you thinking of Bert Falcoa who plays for Hotten United?

    ReplyDelete
  19. sell lucas agger Borini 40mil Pogba is about 40-50 and he would be Gerrards long term replacement

    ReplyDelete
  20. He's not a bad defender for his age. He has a real weakness heading the ball though.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Never gonna happen. We probably sounded him out months ago

    ReplyDelete
  22. To me, Song seems to be a no brainer. He'd surely prefer us to spurs or west ham and we need a player of his type in the squad. This seems to be one of those signings that make perfect sense to everyone except the much maligned transfer committee. Saying that, I still think we've had a brilliant window

    ReplyDelete
  23. I also think we should make a cheeky bid for Petr Cech. Doubt they'd sell us Cech when they wouldn't sell us Bertrand but he'll be leaving Chelsea soon enough and will know Brendan well. Worth a punt

anyone else think we should go for van ginkel if he is for sale? apparently Milan are in for him. He seems to posses all the attributes that stevie was known for and chelsea can't play him. I think hell turn out to be a gem if we give him a chance at the club..

  30. Did he not rupture his cruciate ligament last year?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Spirit of the Shadows4:05 pm, August 28, 2014

yeah , but still a good all round player and he isn't getting ahead of fabregas or oscar any time soon

    ReplyDelete
  33. Eder Balanta now linked. Left footed Columbian PROSPECT.

If we are after a centre back, get a BETTER Columbian, Cristián Zapata from Milan, he was BRILLIANT in the world cup. Also, he is RIGHT SIDED, where we only have Skrtel, who has been poor so far this season.

Him + dosh for Borini? Or swap for dosh+Agger?

on another topic altogether, this has been playing on my mind. Brendan Rogers was quick to support Malki ma-lie recently over the Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan and even found time to criticise him. stating amongst many things:

"I worked with Iain Moody at Watford, one of the most authentic
people you could ever meet. My only conclusion is you have a business
guy operating the club who knows absolutely nothing about football. He
has obviously been a successful businessman – congratulations but
football is like no other business.

"When I see what Malky has had to put up with, to see him being questioned I find it remarkable. Especially when supporters there look up to him and respect him for what he's done."

Jamie do you feel that Brendan Rodgers should clarify his position in light of recent evidence. It seemed everyone was quick to pull out the pitch forks in demonstration against Tan and yet I'm yet to witness many retractions.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Theycallmemrburt4:38 pm, August 28, 2014

If we sign him I hope Skrtel goes...... in fact I just hope Skrtel goes even if we dont sign him.

    ReplyDelete
  36. no the falcoa who sang Amadeus

    ReplyDelete
  37. for a defender in the prem thats a glaring weakness

    ReplyDelete
  38. some players are just not wired with the discipline to defend a good defender must have no ego and his first instinct must be to snuff out danger

    ReplyDelete
  39. Did Rodgers know about the text scandal though? It would be like your friend mouthing off someone and you speaking to him hours later without him saying a word about what he did.

The Cardiff fans never knew about anything until now. When Mackay was sacked the Cardiff fans were up in arms and wanted Tan out. Sh!t happens and there are probably many other incidents such as these happening at other clubs which we do not know about.

I don't think it is about what was known then, I think it is about what has come to light. If a statement has been made in ignorance then that person should act to clarify his position in the light of new information. If everyone could just say what they want even though new evidence has been brought to light then incidents such as the Iraq war should be swept under the carpet.. because some people believed they had chemical weapons ( Its the only example I can think of im in a rush :D )

Im a Liverpool fan but Im a bigger fan of everyone getting justice. Rodgers and everyone who spoke out against Tan in this instance have crossed the bounds. If there was a man amongst them they would all apologise in unison....but then maybe a man doesnt exist amongst them. Any men who cannot admit their mistakes are feeble personalities who hide away and become poor role models for life which is ironic when these managers expect higher morale standards from their players.

    ReplyDelete
  65. But there are two sides to a story. Every action has a reactions. i doubt Tan is an angel himself. He went against every Cardiff fans will when he changed their colours. What would you do if FSG decided ah you know what, our home kit should be blue?

Wheb Rafa came out with his list of facts the whole football community turned on him because I got the feeling there was a sense of this 'upperty foreigner coming over here........' and so forth. Tan changed the strip because he owned the club saved them from going OUT OF BUSINESS and believed a change of colour would be more marketable. Yet the fans quickly turned on him over a colour when he had done soooooooooo much for them. If FSG after saving us from going bust would have wanted to change the colour of our strip then fair enough I personally have bigger fish to fry in life. I know some fans would go crazy but Its not me...... I'd get used to it. doesnt make me any less of a fan because we used to wear blue and white halved shirts...

    ReplyDelete
  69. I am just making a point that Tan does not give a crapper about what paying fans think.

    ReplyDelete
  70. You will find that many of those fans will still wear those shirts even if it has Suarez's name on it. He is still a fan favourite.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Theycallmemrburt7:02 pm, August 28, 2014

I agree. If I were Rodgers I would put my house on Lovren and Sakho and give them time to gel. Like both Vidic and Evra, Sakho has started his career in England shakily but a consistent run of games and a few confidence boosting perfomances elevate him in the same way it elevated them to many league titles. Im in the drop Skrtel brigade.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Speaking to Sky Sports News following the Champions League draw, Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre has revealed that Liverpoolare 'probably finished' in the transfer market and doubts they will bring in anyone else before Monday's deadline. However, he admits it would be wrong to rule anything out and says they will always continue to look.

    ReplyDelete
  73. So what if the club are cashing in? Like it or not, the cold reality is that football is a business, and businesses need money. All fans living in reality knew Suarez would leave the summer after he signed the new £200k/week contract with the higher buy-out clause. They bought the shirts anyway. It is not the club's fault those fans failed to see the writing on the wall, and it is not their responsibility to issue refunds for poor judgement.
    Just my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  74. In other words, he issued a non-statement. 'atta boy, Ian!

    ReplyDelete
  75. And chelsea always get a group of dearth :)

    ReplyDelete
  76. Fitting seeing as how they lack a soul and have no true fans.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Was good the way ludogrets qualified, will have to watch out for that defender/ goalkeeper :)

    ReplyDelete
  78. For god sake the guy was having a jokey text with his mate. I seriously doubt these things are really his views and I think it's a massive over reaction. He never meant those things to go public and I'm sure he's mortified and Moody has lost his job.

What's it got to do with Brendan? He gave his opinion on a matter months ago that most of us shared - Malky McKay got a raw deal at Cardiff. Does the fact he sent a couple of very unfortunate texts to a mate that were meant for his eyes only change that? A lot of people enjoy dark humour without agreeing with anything that's actually being said in it.
He hasn't been abducting children, do you want blood? Is Brendan meant to never speak to him again, denounce him in the media and curse the day he ever had the misfortune to meet one Malky McKay.

When there's things such as what's happening in Gaza and Ukraine at the minute, I find it staggering that people can get so het up over a couple of texts between mates

    ReplyDelete
  79. ha ha ridiculous rumour, only a fool like you jamie would waste time writing a story about it

    ReplyDelete
  80. Yes, sharing racist views between mates is all dandy and is just harmless dark humour... take the stick out of your arse. (sorry JK, it just had to be said)

    ReplyDelete
  81. Theycallmemrburt8:13 pm, August 28, 2014

every word has a thought attached to it. You are in no position to call it a "jokey" as you insinuate that each text had a disclaimer at the bottom! Just as I dont have the right to call him an out and out racist. The comments in the text displayed a definite prejudice that fortunately ends careers :) .All I'm saying is Tan got it right, Malky has the traits of a bigot and may never work in football again. Only Malky and big Ron will be able to tell you if these "jokeys" were actually worth it.

This is a Liverpool discussion board is it not? So im discussing things related to LFC. Gaza, Syria, Iraq, Ukraine, Bosnia, Slavery and the genocide of apprx 100million native Indians to repopulate America with Europeans can be discussed else where... and is.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Sharing racist views? They made some poor comments, which I don't condone, but they weren't organising a KKK rally were they?
Like I said, I don't condone what they did but the reaction to it is staggering and clearly you are one of said super-sensitive types judging by your outrage that I could suggest that 2 mates should be able to share a private joke, regardless of how poor taste it's in, without the lynch mobs forming.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Would Mr Tan have given money back to Cardiff fans in a similar situation ?

    ReplyDelete
  84. For what it is worth |i agree with you

    ReplyDelete
  85. How do you know what was said in the text messages ?

    ReplyDelete
  86. I'm afraid it's not worth much, as dogs - particularly boxers, which I assume you to be based on your picture - are an especially agreeable sort.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Theycallmemrburt8:28 pm, August 28, 2014

you are right to a degree there should be no scandal. Racism hasnt gone away it has simply been pushed underground. Once in a while high profile individuals get outed for something i personally know exists in the hearts on many people. Forfeit? you become a postman :D and join big Ron in trying to convince the world their was no malice intended.

regarding Rodgers and the many high profile (influential people) that had a go at Tan, let me put it like this, If i tell all your mates that your a thief because the situation suggests only you have stolen it but it in fact it turns out I was wrong and i had the item all along wouldn't you want me to amend my words? Even if you didn't I would because I think its the right thing to do.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I see you got your customary dig in over the Ilori affair. He is a signing for the future he is still very young and raw. CBs very very rarely breakthrough in big teams at such a young age. He still needs to grow into his frame and if he does this he will then be an asset for the first team.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Theycallmemrburt8:28 pm, August 28, 2014

    google it its available online

    ReplyDelete
  90. But you are discussing Malky McKay who has nothing to do with Liverpool so you moot your own point.
Whatever I'm entitled to think its an over-reaction and I do. I'm not saying they should get off scot free but end careers? Have you never made a mistake? If you made one would you expect never to be able to work in your chosen field again? Over a text message? Come on man, surely a hefty fine, an enforced sabbatical for a time and his reputation in tatters is enough. He'll need to start at the bottom again anyway. A lifetime ban is over the top IMO

    ReplyDelete
  91. Theycallmemrburt8:33 pm, August 28, 2014

Im discussing Brenan Rodgers opinions on Malky McKay/ Tan. When he spoke he spoke at a LFC press conference on record.

Im not saying ban him for life btw I just think it will be a PR disaster for anyone to employ him again and if they do we will know that that chairman has no problem with a "jokey" either.
