Last summer, Liverpool were regularly linked with a move for Ajax star Toby Aldeweireld, who ultimately ended up at Atletico Madrid. Prior to the move, the 'excellent' Belgian defender confirmed his interest in a move to Anfield, and after a nightmare year in Spain, Alderweireld is (seemingly) for sale once again, and reports suggest that the Reds are interested in bringing him to Anfield.
According to reports in Spain:
* Atletico Madrid are willing to sell Aldwerweireld this summer, and will accept a fee of €9m.
* Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham are interesting in signing the Belgian international.
The story so far:
APR 2013: Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reported that Liverpool were monitoring Alderweireld, and claimed that the highly-rated central defender 'prefers' a move to Anfield.
APR 2013: Ajax director of football Marc Overmars confirmed that Liverpool scouts were 'often present' at the Amsterdam Arena, scouting various players, Alderweireld among them.
MAY 2013: Alderweireld told reporters: "Usually I do not want to play for an English club that’s in mid-table, but, unlike Newcastle, Liverpool meet my criteria"
MAY 2013: In an interview with Nusport, the defender noted: "I'm very selective in choosing my next club. I do not want to go to Manchester City because Kompany will play forever. Liverpool, however, has the potential to return to the top"
JAN 2014: Alderweireld revealed the depth of his unhappiness in Spain: “I miss Ajax, their style of play, my ex-teammates...At Atleti, I'm unhappy if I’m not playing. The team is doing well and I continue to fight for my place, but I don’t think it’s my fault.”
JUN 2014: Sky Sports Italy claimed that Liverpool were 'in talks' with Atletico Madrid over a possible €9m deal.
Alderweireld can operate anywhere across the backline, including central defence, and right back, so his versatility will obviously appeal to Rodgers. However, unless Liverpool sell Daniel Agger, and loan out one of either Coates or Ilori, I don't see the sense in bringing-in yet another central defender.
EIGHT central defenders in the squad (Skrtel, Sakho, Toure, Lovren, Agger, Coates, Ilori, and Alderweireld), is quite clearly unsustainable, and after struggling for game time at Madrid, I doubt Alderweireld will relish the prospect of more fierce competition at Anfield.
He's surely more likely to go to a club where he'll play a significant number of games, and that's unlikely to happen at Liverpool...unless, of course, Rodgers sees Alderweireld as a right-back replacement for Glen Johnson...?
It seems probable that Alberto Moreno will be first-choice left-back, and right back could be shared between Manquillo and Alderweireld. Sounds good to me.

We don't need any more full backs. Offload Johnson and we have 2 quality left backs in Moreno and Enrique and 2 right backs in Flanagan and Manquillo. YNWA
ReplyDeleteAlderweireld would be a good option. The price is right and I think he played excellent for Ajax. Its a shame he went to Madrid though. Hopefully he still has his natural instincts... At this point I'll support any move to get rid of Glen Johnson.
ReplyDeleteNot good enough to play for Liverpool and for that matter any top side. He is just as clueless while defending as Johnson and Cissokho. IMO, I think the defense is sorted for this year and we are probably trying to sign out with a top class striker and may be a midfielder in case Lucas leaves.
ReplyDeleteAlderweireld is a CB. We have far too many of those right now.
ReplyDeleteCouldn't agree more
ReplyDeleteWe dont need him - its time to sell defenders = not buy more BUT we do need a keeper and 2 strikers - assume Borini will go and do not like this idea of leaving it until last minute to loan Falcoa - DAFT PLAN -frought with danger - we could not even get Dempsey last minute but managed to secure Carroll - enough said. One good news = Man U could go into financial meltdown soon - they really cant afford the £125 million they need to spend = watch Glaciers sell another five per cent of their holdings in next 2 weeks - all the signs are there - in big big trouble
ReplyDeleteIF we manage to offload Agger, Toure, Johnson and Coates, with Ilori going out on loan then it could make sense, but that is a lot of upheaval for one window and a loss of some very experienced players from the dressing room.
ReplyDeletePS. relying on Manquillo as 1st or 2nd choice right-back would be suicide. The kid is terrible when rushing into tackles and will take a lot of coaching to sort out. Otherwise he'll be picking up reds and ending careers left, right and centre!!
He had his chance. Chose Madrid.
ReplyDeleteNext...
UTD are not in financial trouble right now. They have massive debt but can easily sustain the debt with their revenue.
ReplyDeleteWhere the problems are going to start is if they do make the CL in the next two season as their incredible sponsorship revenue might then start taking the beck seat.
They are already struggling to sign players so the pressure is starting to show. Should they not qualify for CL football this season then the cracks are going to widen. Fail to qualify for the CL the season after that and the ground gives way.
I think we should never consider any of the players that turned us down for "not being big anymore" last summer. And especially if they had such a shocking world cup as Alderweireld. One of the worst performers in an underperforming Belgium side.
ReplyDeleteI think you're absolutely right
ReplyDeleteAgreed
ReplyDeleteI doubt we'll see that many leave now the season has started. The squad is there now and I'd only expect one or two deadline day additions. Maybe kids like Robinson will get a move and one of Coates, Toure and Agger (probably him because he'd actually generate revenue) but that's about it.
ReplyDelete'We don't need any more fullbacks'.
ReplyDeleteWell, we haven't said that in a while...
Maybe everyone (Woodward in this case) is an Ian Ayre until you have UCL
ReplyDeletecome on 5-0
ReplyDeletetoday
sturridge 2 sterling 2 manquillo 1
agreed eric .....hes not even that good
ReplyDeletewe really dont need this guy hes vastly over rated .....
ReplyDeletehe has got all of rodgers top targets
ReplyDeleteapart from sanchez
i think 8/9 succession rate is fantastic
4-0 Sterling to get a brace.
ReplyDeleteNo need for Alderweild. Would be a waste of money better added to the pot for another striker.
ReplyDeleteWhy would we need him? I do not know who comes up with this rubbish anyways. Last season, Atleti only lost in the games Alderweireld played. Striker and GK only...
ReplyDelete5-0 man
ReplyDeletebony and romero
ReplyDeleteUCL most definitely is the ice breaker we needed in previous windows.
ReplyDeleteI read in the Echo that we are no longer interested in Bony. Let's see who they bring. Romero would be brilliant.
ReplyDeleteI didn't want to be greedy :) they gave us all their players after all...
ReplyDeleteto be fair though utd tried to sign some top players last season and woodward could not do it
ReplyDeletei think like jaimie constantly stresses manager is important david moyes like rodgers does not have an appeal about him
unless you manage real mardid and barca your manager is important
But if Utd had UCL I reckon they already would have signed Vidal and Hummels
ReplyDelete2 of their 3 best player(lallana and lovren) , hopefully we can sign the third schniderlin soon
ReplyDeletethe third one is not very good though
did anyone else realize we have signed all the southampton players who second name starts with L
ReplyDeletelallana,lambert and lovren?
Ah Rickie will play his part. For four million he's never gonna change the world but he'll chip in.
ReplyDeleteConfirmed #LFC team v @southamptonfc: Mignolet, Manquillo, Johnson, Skrtel, Lovren, Gerrard, Lucas, Henderson, Coutinho, Sterling, Sturridge
ReplyDeleteLucas? Mmmh.... Still should be good enough for this lot. Hope to see Can at some point.
ReplyDeletewhy no can?
ReplyDeleteWill be interesting to see what formation we go with.
ReplyDeleteWhy Lucas?? Even Allen would have been fine. Our midfield has no mobility with Lucas and Gerrard.
ReplyDeleteon the bench. sure we'll see him at some point
ReplyDeleteI am not keen on Gerrard and Lucas in the same midfield either. Has to be one or the other.
ReplyDeleteif lfc lose today it will be because lucas played
ReplyDeleteand rodgers should leave
I remember how much overrun we were in the first three games when Gerrard and Lucas play together. Why not play Can? I hope this does not cost us.
ReplyDeleteQuite right let's all start a campaign...........:-)
ReplyDeleterodgers should be sacked it would be clear the fans know more then him
ReplyDeleteif we lose
i want a petition to get lucas and johnson out of lfc
ReplyDeletelike england fans when cleverly got picked
I think those were United fans.
ReplyDeletei predicted 5-0 at the start
ReplyDeletebut with lucas in ............
also how come borini is not even on the bench?
i thought it was a blackpool fan
ReplyDeleteI agree 6-0 now
ReplyDeleteis morgan schniderlin playing?
ReplyDeletebecause he is what should be in our midfield instead of lucas leiva
Lucas hat trick and then waves the finger to Brendan
ReplyDeleteBorini still has an issue with the shoulder injury he picked up in preseason.
ReplyDeleteI guess Rodgers has picked the team that trained the best, but I'm a little concerned that Can doesn't get picked ahead of Lucas. He's been at the team long enough and he has the ability - if he's not ready to go then what's the problem? I really hope this isn't a signal for the upcoming season. Can should be starting games like this considering Lallana is injured.
ReplyDeleteI guess Manquillo is answering the question of why he was brought to the club. Kelly sold, Moreno not yet registered, Flanno and Enrique not fit ... Manquillo is the first name on the team sheet.
allen is 10 times better then lucas one of my favorite players
ReplyDeleterodgers though wants to give everyone a three point start
saw him training
ReplyDeleteHa ha. If Lucas scores a hat trick I will tattoo Leiva on my forehead.
ReplyDeleteDoes not mean he is fit.
ReplyDeleteHe is playing. Did not expect that.
ReplyDeleteSaints Team- Forster, Clyne, Fonte, Yoshida, Bertrand, Schneiderlin, Wanyama, S Davis, Ward-Prowse, Tadic, Pelle
Except manu
ReplyDeletei seriously can't see lucas, johnson ,skrtel, agger and to a lesser extent steven gerrard in the sane time any longer
ReplyDeletethey have been here for ages and apart from gerarrd none of them has produced anything in 5 seasons
Just think how you'll feel if he gets two with ten minutes to go
ReplyDeleteDid not say what type of hat trick. Knowing him it could be three OG's.
ReplyDeleteeven though we should win
ReplyDeletei want him to show what rodgesr is missing out on
Mate could you use capital letters every once in a while? Your comments give me a migraine.
ReplyDeleteAre the seasons on Maes shorter than ours then?
ReplyDeleteAgree. The confidence I have in Lucas has been rejuvenated thanks to the codeman. He has convinced me of his ability.
ReplyDeleteI AM SORRY ,ANY OTHER NEEDS YOU HAVE!
ReplyDeleteBetter use of puncuation.
ReplyDeleteMan city have fernandinho, chelsea matic
ReplyDeleteliverpool lucas ,
does not seem right!
Life's not fair but they can't all have Lucas
ReplyDeleteI am gonna do it like twistadee
ReplyDeleteplayers that should leave either this summer or by next:
johnson (29) free
agger (29) 5m
skrtel (29) 7m
lucas ( 27) free
gerrard (34) retirement
Manquillo has to now take advantage of the opportunity that has been given to him. If he gets stuck in then Johnson will find himself on the bench as soon as Moreno is deployed at LB.
ReplyDeleteThink it will be 4-1-2-1-2.
ReplyDeleteMignolet
Manquillo Skrtel Lovren Johnson
Gerrard
Lucas Henderson
Coutinho
Sterling Sturridge
I hope not. It's way better to release Henderson up the pitch with Lucas and Gerrard deeper. The Dortmund game gave a good showing of this, it's the only reasonable reason why I'd start Lucas tonight.
ReplyDeleteThat's probably the way its going to set up. Very surprised with the Lucas inclusion. Feels a bit like he's playing it safe with regards to Can. Wants to see if we can get a couple of goals in front with the old guard before he trusts him in a competitive game. Disappointed.
ReplyDeleteJust a rumour. Not even a new one
ReplyDeleteYou're surely not serious
ReplyDeleteReally? For 5 seasons none of them have performed? Lucas has been voted our player of the season in that time. Skrtel's done nothing? Top scoring defender in the league last season with 7 goals. That's more than some forwards in the league got.
ReplyDeleteAgree all of them bar Gerrard could do with moving on but some of your comments are crazy. Rodgers should be sacked you think? Manager of the year last season and off to a winning start here. If Lallana was fit do you think Lucas would have started? He won't start many games and I suspect this could still be a shop window period for him to try and find a buyer before the transfer window closes.
First day of the season is notoriously tricky. Man U lost, arsenal and spurs won their games in the dying minutes. We won which is the main thing
glen out we need a holdn tuf takln good passn holdn midfeilder who has grest poisisional sence an can takle so stevo can play furtha forward gero is no holdn midfeilder nor is allen lucus is no good pass his best so can but evn him his more like hendo he go up an dwn the feild we need a wayanamma type nother wide write pplayer an cf that shud be bony an ba
ReplyDeletekkali,ruies,firmino and vidal
deffo another kerper to
ReplyDeletekeeper is needed
ReplyDeleteboney is needed speicaley in a gmes like today
ReplyDeletecf a writesided foward def mid mybe extra atakn midfeilder is wanted bony ,rues vidal bakkali or firmino an a keeper thats who rodgers shud be siming to bring to lfc
ReplyDeleteWell said:
ReplyDeleteAfter watching today's game: Any Liverpool fan who doesn't think we need a Mobile quick tough tackling DM is having a bubble? As it was Ward- Prowse(19) getting in between the lines doing damage and causing us problems? Because S Gerrard(34) and L Leiva(27) have no legs, mobility or pace .
What would the likes of Mata, Silva, Cazorla, Ozil, Fabregas in the league do to us when they get in between the lines against us?
S Gerrard(34) and L Leiva(27) are too laboured and static, the reason Southampton kept Coutinho(22) so quiet was because Ward- Prowse(19) and Schneiderlin(24) were all over S Gerrard(34) and L Leiva(27) like a rash and they struggled to move away from them and most of the build up play from back was started from M Skrtel(29) or D Lovren(24).
The players who need to shown the door is summer still are as follows:
1: B Jones(32) GK
2: G Johnson(29) RB
3: S Coates(23) CB
4:K Toure(34) CB
5: L Leiva(27) DM
6: O Assaidi(25) RW / RWF
7: F Borini(23) FD
And there should be 4 players brought in still this summer:
2 Defensive players: GK DM
1: Romero(27) Of Sampdoria for £2-£4M GK
2: E Capoue(26) Of Tottenham for £6-£9M DM not A Song(26) Of Barcelona
A Song(26) is better offensively than defensively, we need a DM who's sole purpose is to protect the back four and nulify attacks and get things started.
2 Attacking players: RW / LW FD
3: Marquee Signing: M Reus(25) Of B Dortmund for £23-£28M
4: G Rossi(27) Of Fiorentina Or W Bony(25) Of Swansea for £14-£20M
Agree with most of these posts; Glad we won but it was déjà vu with Southy's midfield running roughshod over us. Lucas and SG at the same time is suicide. If Johnson, Lucas, Jones, Agger and Coates are still here in two weeks it will be a real shame.........
ReplyDeleteNo idea where this us being plucked from and there is no evidence nor indication that we would ned or want another centre back. Speculation?
ReplyDeletevery true he's too quick in tacles that makes fans quiet for seconds, but he will adapt,he used to play in physical leaque.
ReplyDeletebut i saw wanyama is a great hustler too
ReplyDeletelets be honest Gerrard wasnt at point for many occations,he looked out runned by soton mid,we must deployhendo as main distributor and bring marcovic quickly, since i know flanno, enrique, moreno, monguilo will be deployed on wings and Lovren, skrtel will master the back line, then sturidge is a bit sluggish and losts alot of balls easilly
ReplyDelete
