On Saturday, The independent reported that QPR striker Loic Remy had passed his Liverpool medical, and was in the process of hammering out a proposed 4-year deal with the Reds. It's all change now, though, as it seems like the £11m transfer is actually on the verge of collapse.
According to the Liverpool Echo, LFC have scrapped the proposed £11m deal as a result of 'concerns' arising from Remy's medical.
Reporter Kaveh Solhekol shed some further light on the issue, when he told Sky Sports:
"Personal terms had been agreed - and..he would wear the iconic no. 7 shirt. A medical problem was highlighted and...once [LFC] got [a] second opinion, they decided not to proceed. I understand there is no chance of the deal being resurrected"
So, what is this 'problem'? Remy's injury history:
* 2008-9: Knee injury - 35 days out (missed 5 games
* 2012-13: Groin injury - 22 days out (missed 3 games)
* 2013-14: Calf injury - 60 days out (missed 16 games)
Unless there's some underlying knee issue, it's possible that Remy's ongoing calf injury may be the problem, though it seems harsh to pull the plug based on such a comparatively tame injury. It's more likely that Remy's heart defect - discovered in 2010 during his medical for Marseille - is the problem. At the time, Marseille club doctor Christophe Baudot explained:
“It's a mechanical problem. A small problem occurred regarding his MRIs. The news this morning is reassuring, but we took this decision because what matters most is the health of player.”
Baudot also revealed that the heart specialists who dealt with Remy 'could find no reason to prevent him practicing sport at a high level'.
After passing the 2012 medical, Remy told reporters:
'I am relieved to know the outcome. When you go through such moments, you don't feel calm. But I'd rather have it happen that way and really know today that I'm healthy.'
The Reds are surely aware of Remy's medical history, so if the heart issue is the problem, then it's hard to understand why LFC wasted time pursuing the deal in the first place...

O crap! This was a shocker! Wonder who the other targets are?
ReplyDeletehe must be clinically dead for us not to sign him as we have a history of signing injured players
ReplyDeleteI read on his wiki page about a possible heart defect found during the medical in August 2010 during his transfer from Nice to Marseilles. He was subsequently cleared and has played, apparently without incident, since. I wonder if it is a condition LFC couldn't live with or has gotten worse or is something new.
ReplyDeleteBack to Bony?
ReplyDeleteThat's a pity, I taught he would fit in perfectly. Wonder is that why he is so cheap
ReplyDeleteBe interesting to know on which aspect of the medical he failed. Wether it's down to a current injury or injury history, or related to general unfitness like weight or heart rate. Or maybe he showed up for the medical holding a ginsters and a coffin nail hanging out of his mouth?
ReplyDeleteIf it’s related to his heart, he’s failed it before, with no issues .. pay the INSURANCE? .. Bony?
ReplyDeleteBeing cheap is down to release clause.
ReplyDeleteYup lets hope Liverpool dont take any rash decisions now.
ReplyDeletei hope not. We need versatile players
ReplyDeleteJust hope we don't go back for Bony, over rated and over priced! Chance for Rogers to get a world class striker, only problem we doesn't seem to attract or convince them to play for him, hence keeps buying second rate players.
ReplyDeleteNot a fan of the player but he has some really great qualities and could have brought a lot to Liverpool...
ReplyDeleteBut seeing how the current medical staff seem really on point if they decide it's better to pull out i guess it's must be serious.
I dont want Liverpool to play with Borini as second striker. He is absolutely useless
ReplyDeleteBit of a bummer but obviously LFC do not want to take a risk when a player has failed his medical. Window far from over. Moving on.
ReplyDeleteJay Rodriguez!! here we come!
ReplyDeleteMassive blow IMO. This deal was a real steal and can't see any other viable options of the same quality available for a similar price so very, very disappointing. Coupled with the Lallana injury and my optimism for next season has taken quite a dip over the last few days. Let's hope BR has a quality backup plan... What they may be who knows!!!
ReplyDeleteSpeaking to Sky Sports News from Chicago, reporter Kaveh Solhekol said: "Personal terms had been agreed with Loic Remy - and it had also been agreed that he would wear the iconic no. 7 shirt that has been worn by Luis Suarez and Kenny Dalglish.
ReplyDelete"We were initially told that minor problems with the paperwork had delayed the deal for five days but it has transpired that a medical problem was highlighted and Liverpool asked for a second opinion.
"Once they got that second opinion, they decided not to proceed with the transfer.
"I understand there is no chance of the deal being resurrected. Liverpool will concentrate on other striker targets."
Why is everything tumbling in the past few days? India are getting ripped in cricket and now the remy deal collapses. What's next?
ReplyDeleteWe will sign another forward. Everything happens for a reason.
ReplyDeleteApparently Liverpool are more more thorough in doing medicals than most other clubs, possibly explaining why our whole player deal process takes a little longer.
ReplyDeleteCan't believe this. Was really looking forward seeing him in a Liverpool shirt. I hope the go all out for Reus now.
ReplyDeleteI was hoping he'd be back up and we'd sign a quality attacker to take the number 7. If we still don't get a really class forward as well as a back up striker then at least get a quality CM
ReplyDeletehow did we sign a aquaman and carroll and a host of other sick notes
ReplyDeleteLet's hope it's someone good and not a panic buy.
ReplyDeleteWell I've got a couple of possible answers for that. One is that we had different standards back when we signed Aquaman. Another is that medicals are designed to detect rather long-term, more serious issues such as heart defects.
ReplyDeleteI think it's because of that that we have amped up the medical process.
ReplyDeleteI actual enjoy our panic buys ...especially the overpriced ones for positions we have covered
ReplyDeletecall me thick but a footballer with dodgy knees etc is about as much use as a chocolate fire guard
ReplyDeletewhy not use the remy money on another Cb to go with lovren then we can play an entire team of centre backs
ReplyDeleteIt really all depends. If a footballer has really dodgy knees, then my instinct tells me that he'd fail the medical. But if you get signed with, for example, a large calf injury that you have no previous history with, the club would surely let you get away with that.
ReplyDeleteanother injured player just what the doctor ordered
ReplyDeleteNew medical staff.
ReplyDeleteNo it doesn't the universe is a chaotic place and stuff just happens. Hopefully we have other options though.
ReplyDeletewhat will happen is remy will pass the medical with another club and we will buy him next year for 30mill
ReplyDeleteJonny Evans!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteMkhitaryan, Diego Costa, Willian, Salah, Sanchez and now Remy...
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTAAsCNK7RA
well he certainly matches the criteria of quality
ReplyDeleteIgor Biscan!
ReplyDeleteOr a barber's shop on the steps to the guillotine. But I think it's probably true that there's been much tightening of procedures at Liverpool since Rodger's took over. And having a current injury doesn't necessarily stop a player from signing. It's based more on muskuloskeletal tests (strength) and general fitness such as weight, lung function, cardiac. The whole thing points to a deeper underlying issue than just a dodgy knee.
ReplyDeleteOr he'll drop dead on the field with a heart attack.
ReplyDeletesako is testament to the tests apparenty he broke the machines in the medical then was out six months after tieing his laces on the pitch...maybe there missing something like basic knowledge of human anatomy
ReplyDeletein that case we will probably pay 25mill
ReplyDeleteand the fact that hes apparently dead
ReplyDeletewell it looks like we will be entering the season with one recognized striker in sturridge who is prone to injury
ReplyDeleteAlexandre Pato..... needs a new challenge and with a Dunga back at the helm, could wet his appetite to get back in the international scene.
ReplyDeleteor
Roberto Firmino, he's young enough to covet into a striker and is adaptable. He carries the ball well and Dunga as the new manager is like a dangling carrot to Brazilian players on the fringes.
Falling all these let bit for Danny Welbeck
(we tend to pay good money for shit players, let get the sh!test there is).
May be after Biscan, Acqualini, Carroll & few others players with persistent injury/health records LFC has set the bar higher than usual. I don't mind that, it's better to be safe than sorry. Best wishes for Remy, I really wanted to see him in Red, wish this setback doesn't cost his career.
ReplyDeleteIt's time for BR to get a player worth of the No. 7 shirt & hopefully that's not Bony or Rodriguez. May be now we 'll see a serious pursuit of someone like Rues, De Maria, Shakiri or Benzema.
We have a new doctor (Zaf Iqbal), he's only okayed one sick note in Andy Carroll. He might have only okayed Andy Carroll because Kenny or Comolli were adamant we sign him.
ReplyDeleteOtherwise all the others were given the green light by the 'horse placenta' doctor (can remember his name).
how did borini and sako amongst others pass the test ....perhaps they should implement a kicking a ball aspect to the medical to weed out the crap who on the whole look like they cant kick a ball
ReplyDeleteThe old club doctor was called Peter Brukner.
ReplyDeleteMust thought he was Jesus... trying to cure the sick
I'm disappointed this has fallen through but I can't imagine it's a decision that's been taken lightly by the club. We'd have all been furious if he was chronically injured and we then found out the club were aware of a potential injury problem from before we signed him
ReplyDeleteballotelli for me
ReplyDeleteHear hear
ReplyDeleteHe's a moody, petulant fruitcake, a guranteed morale killer.
ReplyDeleteSomeone would have to explain to me why anyone would want Balotelli in his club
ReplyDeleteBalotelli will bring that shirt with him which he had at City. It said 'Why always me"
ReplyDeleteHe thinks the sun shines out of his behind. Pas, pass, pass!
15m for a proven goal scorer with star quality.....
ReplyDelete1) know for falling out with all his managers and is prone to regular brain farts
ReplyDelete2) how do you know it's 15M .
Not sure Martinez is really all that to be honest and the 30/35M Porto want just isn't justified for me. The other reason I'm not keen is he is an out and out striker and we really don't have room for another out and out striker unless we are planning on ditching Sturridge to make room for him. For the money we need someone more flexible who can play out wide as well.
ReplyDeleteits been stated but i cant say for certain....managers at clubs are paid well to manage players let rogers worry about that
ReplyDeleteSanchez, why have you forsaken us??? Would have been the perfect signing...
ReplyDeleteAgree with you on Martinez. Same reason why Lukaku is not be an option.
Balotelli will not change. It is about me, me, me...
ReplyDeleteAnd Bony
ReplyDeleteMy jaw will drop to the floor if we sign Bony. Although Sturridge will be more than happy to keep him on the bench.
ReplyDeleteI'm gutted still haven't got over Sanchez he was absolutely the perfect replacement for Suarez, I can't help but feel we could have tried harder and sooner for him (before the end of the season when we probably knew Suarez was going). It leaves us one option in my eyes go at Reus as hard as we can if it fails it fails but give it everything we've got to try and convince him.
ReplyDeleteBony is an option I won't even consider...
ReplyDeletea footballer who is an ego maniac perish the thought
ReplyDeletethere really arnt that many players out there who can play wide and cf
ReplyDeleteEl Shaarawy? I know he had a few injury problems last year but whenever I've seen him he's looked a decent player.
ReplyDeleteI think Reus is out of bounds for us.
ReplyDeleteI agree but it's better to at least try and try and try... And try.
ReplyDeleteHonestly speaking, a brilliant choice. I was hammering head for a name of someone brilliant but lost track, thanks for reminding. Pato might had his issues, but he is a genius, at his best, as good as Neymar, if not better (still can visualize his goal against Barca with just about 3-4 brilliant touches). If anyone can redirect a young derailed career, it has to be BR. Don't know how much he 'll cost, but for anything less than 18mn, at 24, he could be the replacement we were looking for Suarez. Firmino is not a CF, he 'll strengthen the only spot where we probably are most sound (AM) - worth spending, but we better fix the CB, WB, CF & CM first.
ReplyDeleteLovern, Vidal, Pato & Ricardo Rodriguez - I 'll take that (Rues 'll be icing on the cake though)
Rotten development about Remy. That said, I read rumors that we are chasing Rodriguez. Unfortunately it's the WRONG Rodriguez.; chasing Jay but should be Ricardo to fix left back slot. Then dump the cash bucket on Vidal! Ball winning maniac!!!! We might be light at striker but could have Sterling work there and have Ibe or Texeira promoted as a backup plan if we can't locate a solid, if not star, striker. Not a Jay Rodriguez fan especially after such a big injury. Adding RR and Vidal makes our overall starting squad VERY dangerous so we might be able to be more balanced with scoring options and still be better defensively than we were last year........sucks about Remy but better to find out now....
ReplyDeleteNot sure i agree with this.
ReplyDeleteOrigi, Remy who just failed his medical. Markovic who we have just signed. Lacazetta who we have shown interest in. Even Jay Rodriguez.
There are many versatile players out there.
Going to be interesting who we go for next.
ReplyDeletelose suarez lose sanchez lose lallana 6 weeks lose remy forever lose Origi for one year-lose friendly matches AND B R believes things are going well- Why the hell is Borini and Johnson NOT SOLD YET - SELL SELL SELL AND BUY ONE GOOD UN - REUS
ReplyDeleteI know what your saying about BR redirecting young detailed careers but I fear Pato's career gas been derailed for too long now. He's been pretty much off the radar for 3/4 years now. The likes of Coutinho, Sturridge, Sterling etc had only suffered issues over a year or so. Wouldn't be happy at all if went in for him.
ReplyDeleteThe world is going to stop spinning too!
ReplyDeleteJay Rodrigues injured and from Sothampton - we will buy him for £40 million
ReplyDeleteHopefully.
ReplyDeleteMight go for Messi - his Auntie spent a week on holiday in Southampon in 1971
ReplyDeleteWill club refund remy shirts ??
ReplyDeleteOn the serious side - Suarez was magnificent and we have not got a hope of relacing him unless we pay up - fans know that and are getting really anxious and this is before Man U spend another £100 million
ReplyDeleteThe Remy deal being off is bad news.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I'd really like us to sign Bony....I was hoping we would go for him even with Remy in the squad in the hope we'd be offloading Borini...Bony's goal scoring record is excellent, he is quick, powerful, technically very good, has good movement holds the ball up and links up play well and by all accounts has a great attitude and work ethic...he is also is at a reasonable age. He has shown he can play the lone striker role to good effect and be successful in a passing system that isn't dissimilar to how Liverpool look to play. I also think he has a good fitness record.
I'm not sure why so many people on the site aren't keen on him. if we can get him for less than £20m I think he'd be worth it....especially when we consider how often Sturridge is injured.
In terms of alternatives I guess there is Martinez at Porto who will cost over £30m and Rodriguez at Southampton but he is coming off a serious knee injury.
I also think all this talk of not wanting another out and out striker is misguided...we have Coutinho, Sterling, Markovic and Lallana as well as Gerrard to provide the creativity and assists....you could even throw in Ibe and Suso into the mix on that score if they build on the promise and potential they have....what we need to ensure is that we recoup the goals and finishing prowess we've lost with Suarez going.
ReplyDeleteLiverpool will not be able to play quite the same way with Suarez gone....there'll be plenty of games where we play with a diamond 4 in midfield and two strikers and if that is the case Sturridge and Bony up front could be very effective....and as I said, we need a direct replacement for when Sturridge is inevitably injured.
marko is no centre forward and origi is on loan for a year im talking about the here and now i like remy but hes irrelevant now also
ReplyDeletethe problem with bony is that hes an out and out cf for me but sturridge IMO is better so to get the best out of bony would mean sacrificing sturidge up front
ReplyDeletenon of the above are proven goal scorers at any sustained level
ReplyDeleteOk so do you want me to name all the other versatile players?
ReplyDeleteSon Heung-Min, another player we have had an interest in. The days of players specialising in one position are no more.
and at another 25 million. No thanks.
ReplyDeleteBalotelli hasn't been able to settle at a single club he's been at, including his beloved AC Milan where the stage was set for him to become their main man. Think he'll be happy playing second fiddle to Sturridge? No way, the guy's a time bomb
ReplyDeleteI agree. If we pay 19 million for bony I'll be staggered
ReplyDeleteSon is a quality, affordable option I'd be very happy with
ReplyDeleteBecause it IS always him...pass.
ReplyDeleteIsco?
ReplyDeleteIf you read what I said gilstrap, it was that we have plenty of players to create and provide assists and what we need IS goal scorers...Bony's goal record is excellent and I believe he can play WITH Sturridge, with a diamond 4 in midfield behind. I really don't want another winger who might get 8 or possibly 10 goals...I want a true striker who can finish I could be confident will get 15+ goals.
ReplyDeleteI actually think we should go for 2 strikers...Bony and Rodriguez or Lacazette...and offload Borrini....we need 4 genuine and capable strikers in the squad...and Sturridge, Bony, Rodriguez/Lacazette and Lambert, with the creative players we have to assist would mean we should still be potent going forward. I'd actually love us to get Reus or Shaquiri but I'm being realistic here and just cannot see either of those actually happening.
In addition to the 2 strikers in, I would do all I could to add Arturo Vidal to our midfield...the guy is a world class complete midfield player with incredible work rate. Adding him as well as Lovren and Can could transform how solid we are.
Well, he could be an option. Maybe a loan deal?
ReplyDeleteI think we'll play one up front next season in either 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1 hence the emphasis on goalscoring midfielders and wingers we've been targeting. There will be a lot more emphasis in the team all chipping in with goals this season
ReplyDeleteBorini will step up now =P
ReplyDeletedidnt something like this happen with Sylvain Marveaux couple seasons ago? who signed for Newcastle i think? ive not watched many toon games but i suppose bullet dodged there
ReplyDelete.... what? yeah, cause completely healthy players cannot pick up injuries.... nor flu for that matter. its simply not possible to get injured once doctor have given you green flag
ReplyDeletethere is a reason why he is so cheap.
ReplyDeleteBrendan said we'll have to settle for signing Reus instead, unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteThe speculation seems to be that it is not his heart, but his knee. I think it is just speculation right now. A shame.
ReplyDeleteLooked for once that we weren't getting made to be mugs in the transfer market when we were getting Rémy for £8.5m and selling Borini and Assaidi for £14m and £7m respectively. Looks like none of those deals are going to happen now.
Everything does happen for a reason. it's just that we can't discern those reasons most of the time,
ReplyDeleteInsensitive to show a treadmill based video after Rémy failed his medical.
ReplyDeleteHe's probably on here having a Vietnam style flashback right now, le petit poulet.
Not buying a player because he failed a medical and then moving on to Alexandre Pato is most illogical move possible.
ReplyDeleteI back it 100%, baby.
Nope. Not the club's fault if people got Rémy on their shirts like eejits before his signing was even confirmed.
ReplyDeleteAyre messed with the medical equipment. Remy is going to sue him!
ReplyDeleteAyre will just ride off in to the night, like the outlaw we know he is.
ReplyDelete
