Hamann blasts: £27m is a 'ridiculous' transfer fee for 'outstanding' star. Agree...?

Is Luke Shaw worth £27m? LFC legend Dietmar Hamann doesn't think so, and he has ridiculed the exorbitant fee paid by Manchester United, and suggested that Shaw is massively overpriced.

Reacting to the Shaw signing this week, Hamann scathed:

"You wonder why young English players don't get a chance in PL? United paying £27m for Shaw is all you need to know. Ridiculous.

"If Shaw wasn't English he would cost £10m the most. That's why PL managers buy abroad because they get more for their money"

Hamann's former team-mate, Jamie Carragher disagrees, and insists that Shaw is worth the cash. In a recent column for the the Daily Mail Carra noted:

"Scouts have been flocking to see Shaw in action and it is no wonder the top clubs want to prise the left back away. Shaw will command a huge fee but it will be warranted as he has consistently impressed".

With respect to Carra, I have to strongly disagree. I just don't see how Shaw is worth £30m. What has he done to command a 'massive fee'? As usual, Shaw's grossly inflated valuation seems to be based on three things:

* He's English.
* He has pace.
* He's English.

If you listen to the press, Shaw - described by Liverpool new boy Adam Lallana as 'outstanding' - is allegedly an amazing attacking left-back, but for all his much-vaunted attacking qualities, he rarely scores or creates goals. In 67 games for Southampton, he has one goal, and one solitary assist. And this is worth £30m?

I'm so glad Liverpool didn't splash out such an obscene amount of money on Shaw. Admittedly, Rodgers sanctioned a similarly overpriced £25m for Adam Lallana, but at least he's a fully-developed player, and is heading into the best years of his career.

Overall, Lallana is arguably less of a risk than Shaw, but both will be burdened with the weight of their transfer fees, and it will be interesting to see deals best with the pressure.

One thing's for sure: Southampton are laughing all the way to the bank this summer, and they're benefiting big-time from the football version of daylight robbery.

  1. This is the second time this 'Liverpool' site has popped up via Newsnow on the Man United feed due to stories about Man United. We're glad to be of so much interest to you lot, well I suppose it stops you steeling bikes from outside Anfield eh..

  2. Blasts..Scathes... I hate that over the top rubbish with the words, and its spreading!

    Hamann makes a good very good point about English players not getting a chance because theyre vastly overpriced. Southampton set the price though, not United, was shocked myself at the fee... but hey its not my money theyre spending is it? or yours. Rio Ferdinand made a good point that IF United get a good 10years or so out of Shaw, then the price wont seem that bad.

  3. Off topic: this guy Origi is looking pretty impressive against the USA ! Give him a good, progressive and demanding manager and he could become the real deal.

  4. He is probably overpriced, but he looks like more than just fast and English to me. United were talking about a similar fee for Baines last year, but despite the Everton player's far superior end product, I know who I wanted to start for England at the World Cup. Also he'll be worth decent money for years to come whereas lallana will depreciate faster because of is 26 already.

  5. Agreed. Hope we get him

  6. Notice how Carragher said WILL command a huge fee? He obviously said that before Shaw signed for them. He could of had a fee of 15 million in mind!

  7. I'm only interested in LFC good luck to Shaw and Southampton

  8. I don't give a damn about Manchester united. Let them waste their money if that's what they want. All i hope, is that liverpool is not trying to do like how tottenham did last season when they sold their best player gareth bale and used the money to buy a load of players who, unsurprisingly ended up not having any significant impact whatsoever.
    If the hierarchy in liverpool try to force Suarez out because they think they have such high moral values that they can't be associated with someone like him anymore, then they will be doing the biggest mistake ever and we will go 10 years backwards. Mark my words! Buying 4,5 players like adam lallana for 20 million a piece does not guarantee that we will be able to replace what suarez brought to the team. If Suarez is such a hopeless case and a liability, why is barcelona STILL interested in him. Aren't they just using the controversies associated with him as an excuse to reduce his price tag? We should use our head more and not jump on the bandwagon of lets get rid if Suarez ASAP because he is a disgrace and blah blah blah...Barcelona is not doing us any favour if they take Suarez from us especially not at the price quoted in the press. They will be extorting us...

  9. Suarez is as good as gone Ian Ayre meeting Barca officials tomorrow. Club needs to move on like we have done in the past.

  10. If that's true, then its over for us. let's enjoy the champions league this year cauae next year we won't be in there...if they were smart they would try to find a loophole in the punishment by sending him on loan in a country not under the FIFa authority like the kosovo. Then he would not be too rusty and won't lack match fitness when he will come back and a small team will have a star player for a few months. its win win situation for both parties. At the same time they should try to appeal against the ban, so it get at least reduced. Selling to Barcelona is the dumbest thing to do ever. It makes no sense whatsoever.

  12. Totally agree. It's a shame Suarez will never play CL for us but we need to move on. Liverpool need a good break from all the negative publicity Suarez brings to the club and that can only happen by off-loading him. If we manage to bring Sanchez I doubt anyone will even be complaining.

  13. Dude, Suarez missed games last season and the team showed that they could do just fine without him. We've lost our best players on many occasions in the past and always found a way to replace them, the same will happen here.

  14. Spot on, it's obviously somewhat orchestrated, but honestly, we don't mind keeping him, he is that good! Barca should put their money where their mouth is, stop effing about, pay the fee and get the player into their camp otherwise we keep him and sell him for more next summer after he comes back and bangs in another 30...
    Lallana and Lambert will slot straight in, Sturridge, Sterling, Hendo, Coutinho, Gerrard, Can, Lucas, Sakho and the likes will also be there plus any more Rodgers signs. Moneyball, no...Hardball, We Come Not To Play

  15. If for some reason he doesn't go this summer it's going be the next, get the 70- 80 mil for him or add Sanchez to the deal.

  16. We'll see how much Southampton benefit from selling all their best players next season. I've been saying for ages that the reason there are so many foreign players in the premier league is because of the ridiculous inflation on English players. Scandalous amount of money for shaw

  17. You are completely right Kaiba well said. I'm a United fan and I think Liverpool would be stupid to sell him as he is exceptional. From a United perspective it's good news for us and other clubs in the EPL if he does go because without him you would possibly struggle to get into the top four. From another perspective it would be bad for other clubs if he went because he is a joy to watch and makes the premier league more enjoyable!. Same what happened when we sold Ronaldo or like you said Bale left Top.

  18. Would you buy an eighteen year old Ronaldo or Messi tomorrow??

  19. we lost our key players a few times there. 6-8 games at most. but if we don't have them for the whole season then it becomes an entirely different proposition.

    ReplyDelete
  20. im ready to move on but atleast we have to get the money this guy is worth. it was terrible when torres left but 50 mil was more than a fair price for him. we need to get something close to bale's fee imo. but i dont see that happening.

  21. Couldn't of said it better myself. ( and I couldn't be bothered to )

    ReplyDelete
  22. Even if we do get 80, 90 million for suarez can we adequately replace him? I am sorry but history suggest we can't...I have no trust in our transfer committee or in Brendan Rodgers when transfers are concerned. So imo its better to keep our assests and add on it. We don't change a winning team. SAS gave us 50 goals last season. Lets not forget this. The new striker may not gel as well with the others in the squad and our firepower which made us so proud last season may be severely affected.

  23. Negative publicity? Why do u think Barcelona still wants him despite the 'negative publicity'associated with him , huh? Its because it does not matter to them! So the question is, why should it matter for us? Lets treat his absence as if he got injured and plan accordingly!

  24. We have know about the 'English tax' for years. A perfect example cost us 35 million.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Let's make it crystal clear here. That's not a £35m example, that's a £35m donkey we acquired.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I would rather pay the 27 million on Shaw and take my chances than the utter waste on Lallana who is definitely not quick.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Barcelona haven't had to manage for 3 complete years a player involved in racism, cheating, biting, pointing the middle finger to supporters, etc. Having to deal with that as a club is tiresome and demands a lot of energy that could be used elsewhere. I'm not slating Suarez, just saying that LFC need a welcome break from all of this nonsense.
