After conceding 50 goals in the Premier League, it's clear that Liverpool's biggest priority this summer is to tighten up the club's backline, and that almost certainly means bringing-in 2-3 top quality defensive players. Liverpool are currently linked with a whole host of defenders, and if Brendan Rodgers signs another top class central defender, where does that leave £7m summer signing Tiago Ilori? After a year on loan, the Portuguese youngster must surely be an option, and Reds legend Mark Lawrenson believes he could come back into the fold.
In his column for the Liverpool Echo this week, Lawro suggested that Ilori could 'make his mark' at Anfield next season, and noted:
"I’m told Liverpool believe he can train-on and has benefited from regular football. It would seem strange if Ilori isn’t involved with the squad during pre-season"
Damn right it will be 'strange'. At this stage, Ilori - like Alberto and Aspas - is a waste of money, and if he isn't regularly involved in the first team next season, then he will go down as yet another Rodgers transfer flop.
That may sound harsh, but it's not not really about talent. By all accounts, Ilori has pace and ability, but if he's not being used by the manager, then what's the point of having him at LFC?
If - as so many Reds fans argue - Ilori is so good, then there's no reason to send him on loan again next season. Indeed, with Liverpool's defence in disarray, now is clearly the right time to give him a chance to establish a regular place in the first team.
And please don't give me the 'but he's only young' excuse. If you're good enough, you're old enough. Sterling, Flanagan, and Coutinho - all similar ages to Ilori - are proof of that, and they all play regular first-team football.
As I argued last summer, Rodgers made a huge mistake signing both Ilori and Sakho. With the reduced number of games, this created unfair competition in central defence, and led to Ilori being farmed out on loan, and Agger ending the season 'frustrated and irritated' at his bit-part status.
Overall, it's pretty simple: if Rodgers has faith in Ilori, he will put him in the first team squad this summer and play him next season. If LFC sign another first-team central defender, however, and send Ilori on loan again, that will basically be tantamount to a massive vote of no-confidence in the Portuguese's ability to make it at LFC.
With Liverpool back in the Champions League, I just can't see Rodgers putting his trust in a player with no European/Premier League experience.

Posted a highlights package of Ilori's loan spell at Granada. (It has gone for moderation)
ReplyDeleteThis kid is seriously talented. Pace, Power, height, comfortable on the ball, vision, instinctive etc etc etc.
I will be very surprised if he is not a regular for LFC in the next two seasons.

ReplyDeleteI like the idea of having 3 top class CBs at the club fighting for two spots. I think that's how it should be in every position. Toure will probably feel a bit out in the cold but if we had just two major injuries then we'd need him. All 4 defenders have been used this season so I think Rodgers has got the balance just right. Ilori will need to come back and assert himself back in the side so that when Toure goes then we have a ready made replacement. Otherwise if Rodgers does think Ilori is good enough now then Toure can probably find himself a new club.
ReplyDeleteI can't see any problem with the balance of players we've got. The team obviously needs to work on defence but we've got the personnel to do it. Agger may go, Caulker or someone similar may come in ... I would say well done to Rodgers for making sure we've got options in defence. If the balance still isn't right by next summer then we can move one or two players on, depending how they go, but I fully expect the team to be an improved defensive unit next year. Combinations and tactics can only improve so I'm not at all worried. Great situation for the club to be in.
whats this i've been reading about Caulker searching for a home in liverpool? . . .
ReplyDeleteI don't think ilori is a Rodgers signing we were linked with him under dalglish, I think this so called transfer committee is responsible for some of this dross in out team. Now we're in the champions league I hope we can get our first choice signings for once
ReplyDeleteI agree i think ilori needs a shot this season. He's so fast he could have caught ba after gerrards slip. Him and sakho are a good match - one monster and one artist. Pace at centre back is a massive blessing and ilori can pick a pass as well....only question is does he have the strength....maybe sakho has enough strength for both of them and ilori has enough pace for both of them....?
ReplyDeletetbf I do recall Rodgers mentioning something of the lines that we were only signing Ilori as a player for the future as the price was too good to turn down. The assumption being that we are just securing the player now before his value rises to match his potential.
ReplyDeleteAs such it does make sense that he is loaned out while he continues to develop, instead of sitting on our bench/in our reserves, and only brought back once he is ready to step straight into the first team.
Wow that is my dream team can somebody show rodgers this line up please
ReplyDeleteIs it true that he has played only 9 games for garnada. I read it somehwere.
ReplyDeleteWet dream time
ReplyDeletetrust me all goals against us will come from the right side of midfield and defense..lol

We should sign David Luis for £30 mill and allow Chelsea to 'top it up officially' to £50m so they can get one over the financial fair play. Financial Fair Play = more loop holes than a box of cherios. It so obvious 'allegedly' that this whole deal is a scam. Like Man City arranging a £500m sponsorship deal last season with, if memory recalls, the brother of the owner of City.
ReplyDeleteoh and errr Illori yeah play him.
So overrun ... We would be so overrun ..
ReplyDelete1. David luiz is already in paris for 50-60m
ReplyDelete2. No we don't need David luiz, especially not for 30m
3. This would be cheating from the finest...
4. This fake deal would need us to pay more taxes
5. This is probably the worst idea I've ever heard
We only have one central midfielder in that team :-o
ReplyDeleteyou miss my point. I'm not saying sing him. I'm being sarcastic.
ReplyDeleteThis is a classic 4-1-5 formation... I wouldn't even use this playing fifa
ReplyDeleteOh excuse me :) one thing for sure - the FFP handling is a complete joke
ReplyDeleteWe're gona need Ossie Ardiles to manage this side.............
ReplyDeleteCity are restricted to a net spend of £49m this season meaning they will have to sell big in order to spend big.
ReplyDeleteyeah, you're right. I dont think they acually got away with the £500mill sponsorship such was the transparency of their evil plot. But I fear the manufacturing of prices purely so teams will have more to spend.
ReplyDeleteI am baffled as to how Chelsea have managed to get £40-50 for Luiz from a team who are also in breach of FFP rules and have been fined just like City have.
ReplyDeleteWell yes, but he didn't have too many opportunities to play. Once he got a few starts though, he finished out the season starting, quite impressively if I do say myself.
ReplyDeleteIt was a mistake to buy Carroll, Babel, Wilson, Konchesky....etc.
ReplyDeleteNot sure what you keep trying to prove Jamie by pointing out the manager's transfer mistakes all the time?
It seems pretty clear to that he identifies his own mistakes and works on correcting them. Hopefully he now has an exact picture of players we need/don't need and will work on shipping them in/out.
We finished second, Agger is injury prone and not very strong. Llori is viewed as Aggers long term replacement, most top teams buy young players and farm them out for experience. I fail to see what the issue is here. You think that if we bought another attacking player we might have won the league??? well maybe we could have, it's also possible the new signing could have been injured for the season on his first game. Nothing is guaranteed mate.
The future is looking bright and you always nit pick, hard to understand it if I'm honest.
Hey Jaimie
ReplyDeleteI read yesterday that you were going to do a statistical comparison of our CB's in one of your posts yesterday.
I have done one as well. See image below.
Image does not want to post :-(
ReplyDeleteI have emailed it to you...
ReplyDeleteThese are stats for EPL only.
ReplyDelete...
ReplyDelete...........................Suarez
ReplyDelete..........................rakitic
Shaqiri....................................Sanchez
...............Gerrard........can..
Cole.........sakho......lovren.......flanagan
..........................vorm
Subs..mignolet,ilori ,Allen,coutinho,sterling sturridge
Sell ...agger,skrtel,Henderson,aspas, Alberto,Lucas,
Kelly
I know I'll get some flac for Henderson and skrtel but
I'm not a fan of both
No Sturridge? My starting eleven based on only signing a new left back.
ReplyDeleteSturridge--Suarez--Sterling
-------Hendo---Coutinho---
------------Gerrard-----------
--Rojo--Sakho--Ilori--Flanno
------------Mignolet-----------
That's the weekly articles on Ilori and Luis Alberto done. It's a talent in itself managing to write so many different articles on exactly the same issues and players 😴
ReplyDeleteRealistic starting 11: 4-3-3 formation
ReplyDeletePedro/Suarez Sturridge/Bony Sterling/Shaquiri
Emre Can/Lucas Gerrard Henderson/Allen
Moreno/Cole Lovren/Sakho Skertel/Caulker Jhonson/Flannagan
Unfortunately I can't see us buy all the above players as we are luking only to buy 3 to 4 players Maximum,so we will only buy:
1. Cole or Moreno
2. Lovren or Caulker
3. Emre can
4. Lallana or Pedro or Shaquiri
How did Victor Moses get in that advert. Who was it?, Messi, Ronaldo, Rooney and VICTOR MOSES! loool
ReplyDeleteAND the winner for the " We need another player,.... just grab anybody" award goes to.............
What about Coates?? The lad hasnt been given a proper chance; played in about 10 games in 3 years. I will never forget his goal against QPR... what a piece
ReplyDeleteageed
ReplyDeleteHe got out jumped in a cup game against lower opposition that we went on to lose and got bombed out with Robinson
