On January transfer deadline day, Liverpool made a last-minute bid for Manchester City defender Micah Richards, and reports today suggest that the powerful right back could be Brendan Rodgers' first signing of the upcoming transfer window.
On the 31 January, Sky Sports reported:
"Manchester City have turned down a bid from Liverpool to take Micah Richards on loan to Anfield".
The Reds were also interested in £15m-rated Richards last summer, and at the time, The Mirror claimed:
"Brendan Rodgers is keen on a summer move for Manchester City defender Micah Richards. Liverpool have made an enquiry and are among a clutch of clubs who are interested in signing the 24-year old"
Now, according to reports in England today:
* Richards has rejected a new contract at Man City.
* Liverpool 'have been cleared' to sign him this summer.
* The Reds are 'expected' to put in a £7million offer.
Richards is a good player, and the £8m drop in valuation since last summer is enticing, but he has a horrific injury history:
* Nine different injuries since 2008.
* Only 20 appearances over the last two years.
* Averages just 26 apps a season over the last nine years.
Why take the risk when there are plenty of players out there without significant injury histories? With Daniel Agger already at Anfield, do Liverpool need another player who will inevitably end up being a persistent injury crock?

Once was a time I would have loved a us but Jaimie is right the injury history is a massive concern. Which begs the question ate we interested in him as a right back? Perhaps his body can't ale that kind of end to end playing but as a CB? If the reports are true it is curious. Perhaps Gerard's run in the team makes our management think our fitness and medical staff can keep him playing. Maybe it;s just his agents using us as many others have.
ReplyDeleteWould be an extremely poor addition to the squad. Very poor indeed. Surely there is much better out there and didnt we already spend 25m on central defenders last season, so it is obvious he would be a 500% worse version of glen. Bad, bad move
ReplyDeleteI think he has the potential to be a top player if the price is right. Versatility always appeals to Brendan. I think we'll shed a defender or 2 in the summer so for 8 million I wouldn't object.
ReplyDeleteOn another subject mkhitaryan missed a couple of sitters tonight
Cant see it happening, just another rumour.
ReplyDeleteChelsea in the CL semis, great news, we play them on Sun April 27, (might be moved to Saturday now,) they play the second leg April 29/30, they might rest some players, I think they will. Means the City game could be a decider.
I am surprised he is only 24...seems he has been around for a long while. His injury history doesn't actually look that bad. If we can get him for 7M I think he would be a good buy. GJ is turning 30 next August. I keep thinking about 4 tourneys next season and I know we need quality players with experience.
ReplyDeleteMicah Richards class act. Love to see him at Liverpool..
ReplyDeleteI think the Dr will see more of Micah than the Anfield pich will. No thanks.
ReplyDeleteWe need a LB, not RB. We have Wisdom, Kelly and Johnson already playing at RB but at 24, Richards is a very addition to the squad if he is injury free. So 7m worth the risk?
ReplyDeleteThe one truth for next season is the club needs to get a settled defense i think Johnsons problems combined with Aggers injuries mean they need to look for sound players.
ReplyDeleteI wouldnt be surprised to see some less than sound players moved on meaning Micahs a big no.
We need a defender who doesnt get injured much so that we dont have to change defensive lineup everyweek. Signing Richards will be everything we dont want to happen.
ReplyDelete1. frequent lineup changes
2. push back our youth talents
3. wastage of wages and transfer fee
Think we have the new and maybe better micah richards in andre wisdom deserving of a chance next season
ReplyDeleteJohnson, Flanagan, I think we're sorted at right back.
ReplyDeleteRickards and Ravel Morrison the only english players i wish to sign ...
ReplyDeleteReplace Kolo Toure's place in the squad with Richards, who can also then also be an option for right back if need. At 7 Million that seems a decent upgrade on Toure who has cost us alot of points this season and at 24 Richards can improve and overcome his injury problems.
ReplyDeleteDont see why not to be honest. He would be a good option.
The guy is 24 - he can overcome the injury problems of the past. Remember how good he can be - his strength and power is frightening - his pace in recovery is great. I trust Brendan Rodgers' judgement on this (if rumours are true) - could prove to be another Sturridge type gem of a signing - by rights he should be a top 4 team (and England) regular and one of the stars of the premiership - this is one of the few benefits of having money teams like Man City and Chelsea - they will hemmorage decent players through bad management and impatience. £7m worth the gamble I say
ReplyDeleteWe already have 3 players who can play right back in Johnson, Flanno and Kelly who can also play centre back. We need to strengthen other areas like left back, a back up striker to replace Borini and Aspas and Dm cover for Lucas and Gerrard
ReplyDeleteRichards a maybe i think. Go get Puncheon Rogers!
ReplyDeleteI for one would love to see him here, although his injury record is indeed a concern. Maybe KFC can use the same approach with him as Gerrard. I always like to see be linked with good English players. I think he would be a good signing to be honest.
ReplyDeleteI believed if he can stay clear of injury then Brendan will help him become a class player.
I would also like to see us signing ravel Morrison. He has loads of potential and BT would turn him into a beast.
Thoughts?
Agree on your choices!
ReplyDeletePuncheon and Ravel Morrison a NO from me - just out of gut feel - neither has impressed long enough for me to be persuaded that they are Liverpool material. As for our right backs - it pains me to say that Kelly is finished at Liverpool - he has not been anywhere near the player he was before his injury problems - I think for his sake and LFC he needs to move on, I know we have other right backs in Glen Johnson and Flanno but they can all play left back - Flanno has been there since x-mas and is playing better than a left footed international full back (Aly Cissokho) - I don't subscribe to the fact that a left footer needs to be on the left - a full back is a full back if you ask me - people seem to switch their wingers all the time to opposite flanks but in this country we frown upon full backs doing it! I used to play full back and had no issues with playing on either side. In fact it couls benefit you if someone cuts inside you are able to tackle with your best reach and favoured foot!!!
ReplyDeleteI have faith in Zaf and the way we approach various peoples training regimes. Having your own tailored training schedules clearly help the likes of Gerrard, maybe it could do the same with Micah Richards.
ReplyDeleteWhen fit the guy is a beast and likely would move to central defense.
I definately wouldnt bank on 3 points away at Palace. A very real potential banana skin
ReplyDeleteAnother injury prone? Lucas agger enrique sturridge not enough apparently!
ReplyDeleteNot sure what KFC would have to offer :)
ReplyDeleteLallana?
ReplyDeletesturridge injury history? we do improve people
ReplyDeleteTake his appearance count with a pinch of salt as I wonder how many games he was injured or more than likely just didn't get in the first team, if the latter then would be a decent signing.
ReplyDeleteA very AVERAGE player, at best!!!
ReplyDeleteWhy would Liverpool need him? Kelly, Flanagan, Wisdom and Johnson are all just as good so the money could be better spent on a good third striker.
ReplyDeleteMatt Hummels, Turan, Koke, Reus, Kroos, Monero, to mention but a few, these players are i feel is what is needed. Richards is good but is he an improvment on what we have?? Injury history is terrible, but i suppose he might be a good addition, nothing 2 get excited about if he were good enough he would have played more for City. Honestly Jhonson and Wisdom are as good. Montya would be a good right back 2 get JFT 96 YNWA...
