Stay or Go? 'Wonderful' £30m LFC target admired by BR responds to transfer rumours

Earlier this month, multiple reports claimed that Reds' boss Brendan Rodgers had identified Southampton star Luke Shaw as one of his top targets this summer. Rodgers is a confessed admirer of Shaw, but is the right-back looking for a transfer, or will he stay at Saints next season?

Last week, the Daily Mail reported:

"Liverpool will compete against Manchester United and Chelsea to sign Luke Shaw this summer.

"Ambitious [Brendan] Rodgers is determined to sign him".

When asked about interest from Man Utd, Chelsea, and Liverpool over the weekend, Shaw told The Independent:

"There is not a club I am not linked with, but I don't focus on that. My main focus is my football on the pitch and I want to keep doing that. It doesn't really bother me the attention I get. I just stay focused. Whatever is said is said".

Rodgers is long-term admirer of the 18-year old, and in his pre-Southampton press conference a few weeks ago, he enthused:

"It's great to see Luke Shaw doing very well at Southampton. He's a wonderful talent. It's good to see British talent progress"

A few weeks ago, former Liverpool defender Phil Babb urged Liverpool to 'break the bank' to sign Shaw. During the 5-Times Podcast he raved:

"I know it’s ambitious but I would like to see Liverpool going in for Luke Shaw. Pay the £20 million and view it as getting England’s left back for the next ten years"

Southampton reportedly want £30m for Shaw, which is massively excessive for an 18-year old, but given there's always a rip-off premium attached to decent British players, it's pretty much par for the course.

Shaw, who is a boyhood Chelsea fan, but childhood allegiances do not always dictate where a player ends up. Money and prestige talks, and if Liverpool win the league this season, the Reds will be in a fantastic position to attract a higher quality of player, though I'm not sure that Shaw fits into that category just yet.

Even if he Shaw wanted to come to Anfield, it would arguably be a massive risk to spend £30m on an 18-year old.

  3. Luke shaw is wroth 30 million all day long

  4. Too much. He's good but I don't believe he's the most promising wing back in world football. I think because he's a name that gets talked about a lot people just naturally think he's really special but I doubt he's that much better than someone we could get in Europe. If Rodgers truly thinks he's worth that kind of money then maybe fair enough but only if he's 100% sure and Shaw arrives at Liverpool as ready to take a starting role and make a difference to the team. You don't spend money like that on potential.

  5. He is only 18. 30 million may be a bit too much but what you will have is a top LB for the next 10-12 years.

Look at how much money we have wasted over the years on players occupying LB who have either not been good enough or are too injury prone so the 30 million on Shaw might just save us plenty of money in the long run.

  6. Sure we'll be in a better position than we were but we won't be in a better position than Chelsea. Money? They can match us. Distance to his relatives in Kingston upon Thames? They beat us. Childhood allegiance? They beat us. If Chelsea want him, they will sign him. The only way I can see is to make a bid from us more attractive to his club and that will only work with a big money combo deal, possibly involving a swap.

  7. Without knowing who might be leaving Liverpool, the size of any transfer funds the availability of targets and what the competition might be it is difficult to prioritise targets or decide a value. Nevertheless Shaw looks the part and would almost certainly improve the club.

Regardless of what happens this year next year will potentially be a greater challenge. Other clubs will strengthen in a bid to capture the increased revenue from CL qualification and teams might play differently against us. Additionally we will have the challenge of Europe. There will be raised expectations and wewill possibly have to replace Luis....... I am feeling worried already :-)

  8. he's a left back.....rubbish article if you don't know what side he even plays

  9. why do you keep deleting my comments....usual made up crap by you

  10. Should pull out all the stops to sign this lad,he's top quality. Left back has been a problem position for years and Luke Shaw is the the answer for the present and the future! I can see us selling Enrique and Agger in the summer it'll have no negative affect on the team,as i believe Aggers legs have gone (soldado doing him for pace as a prime example) and if we are honest who knows what Enrique is going to do when he goes on one of them crazy runs (he reminds me of rocky balboa chasing the ckicken) he must be a nightmare to play with? If we had Flano,Shaw, Johnson and Wisdom going into next season I'd be delighted!

  11. £30M is excessive and rightly so. At the same time sometimes we need to gamble on potential, Rooney comes to mind.

But it is a lot of money, I would prefer Digne from PSG.

  12. See you didn't realise he can play both sides - he must be worth £30M :-)

  13. Yeah a lot of money. It's a tough one to call. Got to balance the
potential against the cost. If we do get a world class left back for ten
years it's money well spent, if not, its an expensive
    gamble.
I think I would prefer Marcelo if he can be gotten. Defensively he could be better, but IMO that's as much down to Madrids coaching and philosephies as it is to any inherent deficiencies in his game. I think he can be improved in this area, going forward he is frightening.

  14. He probably is the best full back his age. People talk about Aurier, Plattenhardt (both 3 or 4 years older than Shaw), but they haven't got the experience or quality Shaw has. Have a look around for yourself, there really aren't many teenagers with 50 appearances at left back in many topflight first teams around the important leagues. And there are no U21 players I'm aware of that look as balanced and accomplished as Shaw in his position. That still doesn't mean we should spend £30m on his contract though.

  15. Yeah mate if Lerner tries to hold out for that the revolt will be from Benteke as no one will pay it.

  16. Has he done much this season? Is he not just a flash in the pan? We would really be sacrificing speed if he played but having variation is not a bad thing and the front three will not be able to play every week twice a week on lots of occasions. Then there are injuries (Sturridge has had a few and it is surely just a matter of time with Suarez) and form (Sterling is still quite young).

I can't really see this happening and think it is an old story recycled.

  17. Why have I got an image of your avatar in a a dirty kitchen with lots of cornflake boxes cut out and a cat with smarties tubes on its legs as a prototype?

  18. i don't understand way is it difficult for you guys to except that Luis loves the club and the support he gets here, and we all know that the man loves a challenge// NOW is there a bigger challenge than taking a club that finished 7th the make win the prem .. i don't think there is ...

  19. Enough about players though, are there rumours about the kits the champions will wear next year? Seeing as we avoided as many opportunities as possible to wear our away jersey this year I'm sure people at the club are also dying to see if we'll be kitted out worthy of champions or not.

  20. You're putting words into my mouth there mate, I don't think he's better than Sturridge, I just believe he'd be a good option alongside what is already a quality front three.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Obviously Stuzza played the first 82 and grabbed the opener prior to this.. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Lukaku and/or Muriel - NO WAY Benteke!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Couldnt agree more. Sturridge in different class comparing with Benteke. But I believe he could be a good back up striker and can be played anywhere in the front three or deployed as a winger too. If its 15mil i'll grab it and not more than that. Btw we need a depth inour squad is it? Why not the proven one, anyway he's doing well this last two seasons

  24. I don't know. I think Pochettino is building something at So'ton. I think his players are emotionally invested in it. I think they stay if at all possible. I think the only way they leave is if Pochettino leaves...which he may well do because he is a talented manager and there will be big clubs looking to grab a young, talented manager.

  25. He's a left back, not right. Hardly suprising the author can't decide if he is worth 30mill without knowing fundamental facts about him.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Luis loves the club and we all love him. Stop talking crap selling him for 100million and bla bla bla all.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Possibly because he was so desperate to leave last year he even considered joining Arsenal having previously flirted with Real. He may well have changed his mind and be able to achieve what he wants at Liverpool and could now go on to become an Anfield legend. But who can say for sure ?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Two words: Clint Dempsey. 16 for Fulham 2 years ago...big transfer to Spurs last season...back in the USA now. Anybody can have a career year. Benteke's was last year...not so much this year. Besides he barely has the mobility for a striker...none what so ever for a winger.

    ReplyDelete
  29. When he is playing against us he is on our right.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Don't be, this is a time to enjoy! I can't see Suarez leaving after a season like this, especially since he knows we'll be investing to compete on multiple fronts next year. Who could afford him? City Chelsea Bayern PSG Barca Real...we won't sell to a direct rival so cross out the first two, Barca just got their transfer ban so X them, and at any of the others he wouldn't be 'the player', the big man like he is here. He'll stay and compete for everything he wants to compete for and be the star, and on the evidence of how happy he is this season he'll be glad to do so. BR is good, he'll adapt and handle it all and we'll be a dynasty for the next thousand years.
