'It's impossible' - Is this the most ludicrous mind game yet from Jose Mourinho...?

Saturday was a fantastic day for Liverpool FC. Chelsea lost to Crystal Palace, and Manchester City dropped two points against Arsenal, leaving the Reds in a great position to capitalise this afternoon against Tottenham Hotspur. There's still a long way to go, though, and LFC are by no means home and dry, but according to Jose Mourinho and his increasingly transparent mind games, it is now 'impossible' for Chelsea to win the league.

When asked last night about his team's chances of securing the league title, Mourinho claimed:

"Now it's impossible to win the title. We depend too much on other results."

"When you depend a little it's possible, when you depend a lot I don't think it is possible. Mathematically it is still possible but one thing is mathematics and another is reality."

This has to be Mourinho's lamest attempt at mind games yet. Alex Ferguson he 'aint. Clearly, Chelsea's boss is trying to put the pressure on Liverpool and Man City by indirectly making both clubs favourites for the title, but his insincerity is glaringly obvious.

I'm amazed Mourinho managed to make those comments with a straight face. How can it now be 'impossible' for Chelsea to win the league? At this point, they are still top of the league, and in a season filled with twists and turns, anything is possible.

To be honest, I expect more from Mourinho in the mid games department. Does he really think that Liverpool and Man City will fall for this nonsense, and start buckling under the pressure? No chance. Brendan Rodgers is too intelligent a manager for that.

Chelsea are definitely still in the title race, and Mourinho knows it.

Rodgers will no doubt be asked about Mourinho's comments in his post-match press conference this evening, and I'm sure he'll dismiss his contention as the nonsense it so obviously is.

  1. Jose just cracks me up...

  2. I had a big belly laugh when he said that, but predictably, the chelsea fans; or more like, 'The Special Ones', are buying into it, just like how they buy into everything else Mourinho says. If Mourinho said Hitler was a great, misunderstood person, they'd believe him.

  4. Chuckle. Chelsea fans are beginning to worry about Liverpool. Somehow everyone else thought we couldn't maintain form. I'm nervous as hell now. We could go top today after 3 months of brilliance.

  5. I think perhaps Mourinho's 'mind games' are starting to have an effect on his own players. He's told us that Man City are clear favourites so many times that they are starting to believe it. The power of suggestion.

  6. Love to see his mind game backfire him everytime. Its jz like how he called Wenger the "specialist in failure" then he ended up losing. Sigh

  8. Just think of the audience; Jose is not just playing mind games against his opponents but also rallying his own team and supporters. If Jose end up losing the title in the last round the mental blow will not be as devastating now that he has claimed that their title chance is over. Also Jose has been playing down their title chances all season because he knows how difficult it is to win any of the top tier leagues in your first season with a new team. My guess is that after those comments he marched straight to the locker room to rally more faith in his players regarding their title chances.

  9. It is going to be difficult to brainwash Abramovich.

  10. When City won the league Mancini was saying it was all over only for United to drop points and for City to crawl their way back.

Earlier this week, Rodgers said he doesn't play mind games. Could that be a double entendre? Bit of a bluff?

Mourinho has done plenty of talking this season, but in a battle of wits, Rodgers has done his talking on the field.

  11. Really insightful story. Your an amazing writer. (Sarcasm font) Man City will win the league as a result of beating your sorry asses at Anfield. Chelsea will then bitch slap you back into third. When you sort out your defence you will then have a crack at the title.
