Liverpool are currently linked with a January move for Juventus star Claudio Marchisio, and ex Reds striker Stan Collymore believe the Italian international would be a great addition to the Premier League.
Last week, The Express claimed that Liverpool are monitoring 27-year old Marchisio, who is the subject of €24m bid from arch-rivals Manchester United.
In his column for The Mirror today, Collymore - who from 1995-1997 formed an excellent striker partnership with Robbie Fowler - hailed Marchisio as a potentially 'exciting' signing (for Man Utd), and in general terms, added:
"Juventus star Claudio Marchisio is one name we are hearing and he...would make a huge impact [in the Premier League]. He is a great player, and someone I rate highly"
When asked about Marchisio's future in December, Juventus General manager Beppe Marotta told Tutto Sport:
"It is true that Manchester United are interested, but we do not want anyone to leave. Our team is strong and balanced."
Former Juve President Giovanni Cobolli Gigli believes that Marchisio is well-placed to become an all-time club legend like another recent LFC target. He told Radio Sportiva:
"The memory of what Del Piero was will last forever. He was the greatest player in the club’s history. Now let us hope that we can find a worthy successor, and that could be Marchisio.”
Like Steven Gerrard, Marchisio is the archetypal one club man. He came through the youth ranks at Juventus, and has spent his entire senior career at the club. As such, he'll probably fight tooth and nail to stay, and in a recent interview with JTV, Juve's official TV channel, he made it clear he doesn't want to leave:
"I have no intention to change, but every year there have been rumours that involved me. I have another two years on my deal with Juventus. I hope to play as long as possible here"
Marchisio came off the bench over the weekend, and scored a goal as Juve thumped Cagliari 4-1, the club's 11th consecutive Serie A win. After the game, Antonio Conte told reporters:
"Claudio is important and he's been behaving professionally, even if he's been on the bench. He made us change gear when he came on for [Andrea] Pirlo"
Marchisio is increasingly being used as a substitute these days, and with Pogba, Vidal and Pirlo the preferred midfield three - and the World Cup looming fast - perhaps a move could be on the cards?

Just wish we'd sign someone already....
ReplyDeleteI did rate him but he's really been struggling for form in a team doing very well beating everyone.
ReplyDeleteI am a pool fan and I like Marchisio but he would be better staying at Juve as when Pirlo leaves he will be in the trio with Vidal and Pogba in the midfield. I cant see him being as good as in the prem for some reason .(Aquilani) . I do think if he was coming he would fit in at Anfield better than Old Trafford as he would suit Pool's playing style better but not all adapt when coming here.
ReplyDeleteActually, I am loosing interest with so many "potential signings". After previous experience, it's almost certain that whichever player is dragged as potential transfer move to LFC, most likely 'll end up somewhere else. & there shouldn't be any ambiguity regarding our requirements - we need a quality DM, winger, LB, back up RB & may be a backup AM, probably in that order. And there are few very good options available, worth bidding.
ReplyDeleteOur net spending last window was just about 15m, so money should be there. Instead of beating about the bush we should get someone & move on. After a moth long discussion, I can understand there was no bid placed for Salah. Ma Villa could have been a brilliant signing, now looks to join Napoli; I am tired of Montoya story, Matic is almost certain to join Chelsea & now we are getting few more new names. I actually am not sure about BR or FSG is willing to buy anyone in Jan window.
You might be right BR hinted in an interview before Stoke game about pushing on with the squad he has if none of his targets can be got for the right price. Methinks his budget is too slender to do anything dramatic. 2 players who really wanted to come to LFC (Salah and MVila) look like they are not coming which can only mean the money is not there. IMO sell Glen Johnson now to Arsenal and spend the money.
ReplyDeleteToo true m8. Not sure about our transfer policy at all. Rodgers has already given us Allen, Aspas, Alberto, Assaidi, Borini, Moses, Toure and Sissokho, all not up to life at Anfield, i do fear we're in for more of the same.
ReplyDeleteimo this is sooooooo unlikely from happening.
ReplyDeleteNah, he knows Pirlo is near the end of his career. Probably even after this season. He'll stay.
ReplyDeleteItalian players and LFC just do not go well together. Happy that this rumour will still only be a rumour when the transfer window is shut.
ReplyDeleteI feel like BR and FSG have something up their sleeves that will only be revealed until it is 99.9% sure. I have been watching all the transfer news and no rumors on LFC transfer bizz not even on Salah so I am getting the feeling that their is something special in the works. UCL here we come great in this weekend TIA LFC YNWA
ReplyDeleteAlso Gerrard's new position leads me to believe no new DM.
ReplyDeleteIf the old Dogger rates him highly then he must be good :)
ReplyDeleteI feel like they have nothing up their sleeve because of the lack of UCL football. If we get anybody it will be Ings or Hughes or someone similar. After this Summer and losing really talented players to teams playing European football, I'm not feeling the love in January even though our prospects look brighter than August.
ReplyDeleteOn the park or in the car park?
ReplyDeletePossibles that might be available: Lamela or Morrison in mid-field?
ReplyDeleteNo more Italians after Aquilani definitely not, good player though.
ReplyDeletePigs fly before Marchisio comes to Anfield.
ReplyDeleteHa,ha, the car park of course .has fantastic ball control & great approach play, to the windscreen :)
ReplyDeleteI believe Brendan is solely interested in attacking players and not in the defense department. Typical ala Barcelona. It would be good if FSG advise the Fans on what is their plan in building a LFC team that is championship material. LFC IMHO needs to work on their defense in the midfield and solely focus on strengthening it. We don't need wingers we have a functional squad and all it is required for now is buying players that can read the opponents movement, solid personality eg Gattuso, Keane, Veira and etc. Brendan also needs to groom his signings. Work on getting the best from your signings.
