Last night, Liverpool annihilated bitter rivals Everton 4-0 at Anfield, and strengthened the club's position in the all-important Champions League places. After lackluster performances against Aston Villa and Bournemouth, the Reds hit back with a vengeance, and but for the heroics of Tim Howard, and some wasteful finishing by LFC's players, it could've been 7 or 8-0 on the night. Needless to say, LFC players past and present are ecstatic over the win.
In an interview with LFC TV, former Reds boss Roy Evans enthused:
"Fantastic all-round display. Great pressing, and Everton couldn't cope with it. Collectively, we were more solid, and there was a lot of fluidity. It was beyond our wildest dreams.
"They started the game with the right attitude, and put the pressure on Everton from the start. Flanagan made a difference, and Skrtel was excellent"
Twitter reaction:
Mamadou Sakho
"Congratulations to the whole team for this amazing victory yesterday during the derby !! I look forward to returning to competition!"
Martin Skrtel
"It's a great feeling. It was the perfect performance from us."
Daniel Sturridge
"It wasn't about me and the goals I scored; it was about doing a job for the team."
Phil Thompson
"In the history of our club with the teams so close in the league this was an incredible result, well done to all"
John Aldridge
"Great result happy days.Still need to buy though before Friday!!"
Raheem Sterling
"Massive 3 points from the boys tonight great team performance"
Jason McAteer
"Great result an performance. Loved the desire from the lads and the clinical finishing. Clean sheet as well"
Neil Mellor
"Brilliant to see the result from Anfield tonight!! 4-0 sounds like it was an emphatic derby win. Looking forward to seeing the goals".
Simon Mignolet
"Great result and atmosphere in the 222nd Merseyside derby!"
Luis Alberto
"That´s the Merseyside Derby we all dreamed about. Keep fighting!!"
A fantastic result, which will be remembered for years, but right now, it doesn't really change much.
* With Man Utd signing Mata, and Spurs on an upward curve, the fight for the top four is only going to get tougher.
* One great result doesn't change the fact that there are major issues that still need to be addressed at Anfield, including the club's ongoing poor performance in the transfer market.
* One game does not define a season. Beating Everton does not mean LFC are now invincible, and failure to beat West Brom this Sunday will basically render the result meaningless.
* The players were obviously going to be fired up for a Merseyside derby, but the same desire needs to be displayed in every game. If Liverpool had come out of the traps like that against Aston Villa, for example, the result may have been different.
Hopefully, this result can be a springboard for another consistent run of form. That's two clean sheets in a row now, and that's a great foundation upon which to build.

John Aldridge sums it up.
ReplyDeleteIt was great to see Rodgers pick his best players in positions to fit our best formation, rather than breaking up his team to (apparently) better suit SAS alone
ReplyDeleteIt was really good to finally get another clean sheet too - for all the talk of Everton's injuries yesterday, we were without an entire first choice back four!
ReplyDeleteA couple of additions to the team - in attack and midfield - over the next couple of days could definitely inspire confidence that we can hold onto 4th place and aspire for even more...
We'll be seeing all these so called ex-reds as pundits on were not biased bt soon
ReplyDeleteLooks like the transfer of the Ukrainian might happen and he looks the business. I think Rogers reluctance to buy a DM is because he sees Hendo, Gerrard, Allen and Lucas as sufficient cover there albeit 2 of them are injured. Rogers has this team playing, I dare say it, the best attacking football along with city, if he can sort the defense out then what a team we will have! of course spurs are in there, as are UTD and Everton, but I really do believe we are better than them. we now have the points advantage and hopefully City will do Spurs tonight. Then it really is in our hands!!!
ReplyDeleteWe was excellent last night. The speed which we attacked was brilliant. Hendo and Gerrard controlled the game, Coutinho back to his brilliant best, Toure and Skrtel solid, Flanaghan great and finally Cissokho had a reasonable game! We've got to build on this though, West Brom on Saturday is a massive game for us.
ReplyDeleteLiverpool's fixtures are favourable when compared to our immediate rivals. We've got Utd away but the rest of the big teams have to come to Anfield. Everton, spurs and utd all have tougher run ins. I also think arsenal will be dragged into it. Every reason to be confident.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jaimie that we need to beat WBA but that result does give us some room. With Spurs near certain to lose against City and then Everton and Spurs playing each other in a game or two I believe we can maintain the gap. Especially if Villa play EFC like they played us.
ReplyDeleteWith us playing Spurs at home and them and EFC having to play the likes of Chelsea away I think we can be quietly hopeful.
again... very impressed w Ross B. I say put a cheeky bid in for him on the heels of the demo. 18 mil.
ReplyDeleteThe interchanging of Suarez and Sturridge on the left really impressed me. We needed to get three in mid and Coutinho had his best game of the season there. I hope we keep that shape and idea from now on in.
ReplyDeleteGotta say too that when Alberto came on thought he looked quality, his first touch to switch the play with the outside of his foot was brilliant. Would like to see more of him...
ReplyDeleteI know it lacks originality and will be pricey but a double raid for Lellana and Shaw from Southampton would be a game changer for us. Flanno and shaw could sort out the full back positions for a decade.
ReplyDeleteDidn't think he had that good a game last night but he is gonna be a quality player. It'll take a lot of money to get him away from Goodison..
ReplyDeleteWhilst it was brilliant to get 4 goals, I think keeping a clean sheet was just as important. Everton were, mostly, restricted to long range efforts.
ReplyDeleteI was saying that last night myself. It is really important for the mentality of the players. They know how to do it and need to continue.
ReplyDeleteMostarLFC retweets: Dave Fallows negotiating with Dnipro not Ian Ayre according to sky sports.
ReplyDeleteI agree not the best game but you can see how explosive the lad is. This lad is just going to grow into dare I say... a beater.... We want him in Red. This is the closest to SG replacement going forward IMO.
ReplyDeleteAny truth in Konoplyanka to Liverpool?? if i am to believe journos we have made a 16 mil bid. and his father says he is joining english club at the end of the week.
ReplyDeletei wish this is true.
Oh how we missed Sturridge against City & Chelsea!
ReplyDeleteWe really don't know who does what do we? Lot's of people say it's Ayre, which strikes me as confusing as he seems busy with the commercial side. People blame Rodgers but of course he can't be the one making sure deals happen. Fallows is head of recruitment but does he have experience in making deals? Is he not more a scout?
ReplyDeleteIt's all a bit confusing. I would love to know more.
The Echo and BBC are reporting this directly (not in rumor sections which is not actually their reporting) that we have made contact and are interested, but it is a long way off being sorted just yet.
ReplyDeleteCan't see us paying the silly money it would take to get him. £18M wouldn't come close for them to sell to an Arch rival who are battling for CL.
ReplyDeleteI also want him but it is just a pipe dream mate.
Been reading about Kono+...9 goals in all comps this year. He's known for his attacking. He also has a black belt in Karate which would be useful in the Merseyside Derby if Mirallas is around him.
ReplyDeleteAlso been reading about Hernanes from Lazio. Another playmaker whose name has been tossed around. Not as good on paper...and appears to have no martial arts skills;-)
The weird thing is neither one of these guys is known as a DM...which is really what we need.
And what happened to Alderweireld.
Agree. It is very important that SAS know they don't have to help control the MF and constantly have to help out on defense and they can concentrate on what they do best.
ReplyDeleteI like both of those guys...and I like Jay Rodriguez too.
ReplyDeleteHe was playing with a broken toe and painkillers...so he could have been off his game a bit.
ReplyDeletequietly is good.
ReplyDeleteI thought he was slow and lacked energy and purpose. I kept waiting for him to take control and he never did...always seemed to be searching for the right place to be. But he didn't make any mistakes either so that's good.
ReplyDeleteSack Hernanes. If he can't do a roundhouse I am not interested.
ReplyDeleteJamie, If we were to draw against WBA, I would still claim the 3 points taken yesterday are "meaningful" - and I hope the team pushes on, even if we were to drop points in the next game. Should they not?
ReplyDeleteThis is what Konoplyanka's father had to say...
ReplyDelete"I do not want to say specifically but the information about a transfer to the English club is true," he said.
"He can change clubs later this week. We do not consider offers from Ukraine."
Liverpool score 2.41 goals per game. That will (historically) win you PL 11 out of the 13 times (this millenium) and guarantee a runner-up position. More attackers, please!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great night to be a red.
ReplyDeleteI hope Liverpool can keep some consistency now. No good being great one week and poor the next as has happened lately. The games coming up against Arsenal will be massive. I feel we played them at a bad time earlier in the year and hope we can redress the situation.
Offense wins matches...defense wins championships.
ReplyDeleteSo it looks like Konoplyanka is the 'major signing' Rodger's alluded to. Good player with quick feet - as I remember he gave England a torrid time down the left over those two qualifiers. Back to last night, really proud of the team and it was a timely performance, given the (exaggerated) negativity of some fans over the last week or so. BR got his tactics absolutely bang on, and I enjoyed his reaction to Sturridge's little tantrum, proving again what an excellent man manager he is. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that he is the guy to take Liverpool forward.. Sturridge exhibited some maturity too, showing almost immediate contrition. Aldo is correct though; we still need to strengthen, and a 4-0 victory over Everton, however perfectly executed, doesn't change that.
ReplyDeleteYes and Everton are a barely ambulatory side right now. We aren't much better until we get a few players back so we didn't play the same Everton squad we drew 3-3 with a few weeks ago.
ReplyDelete"The" English club sounds promising. There are no other English clubs being reported to be interested are there? An English club would be less hopeful I think.
ReplyDeleteReading too much in to it?
guarin is available ,perfect player this time
ReplyDeleteThere's a report that Spurs are trying to hi-jack it just now.
ReplyDeleteWho? Where?
