Possible LFC XI vs. Man City: 3 big decisions for BR; Reds to get 'steamrollered'...?

It's fantastic to see Liverpool sitting pretty at the top of the league, but in the words of Detective Marcus Burnett: the sh*t just got real. If results go the wrong way over the next couple of games, the Reds could plummet down the table to sixth place, and if any of the club's rivals build up any kind of momentum, it could be difficult to get back into the top four. Cometh the hour, cometh the team?

In his Monday press conference, Brendan Rodgers stressed the thinness of Liverpool's squad, noting that he had only 17 players from which to select for the crunch games against City and Chelsea.

That may be the case, but given Rodgers' (arguably) poor performance in the summer transfer market, it's hard to sympathise. In fact, it sounded to me like the manager was getting his excuses in early.

The club's injury situation remains the same: Gerrard, Sturridge, Enrique etc are all out. After picking up a knock against Cardiff, Jon Flanagan is also a doubt for the game, but with Martin Kelly now fully-fit, that shouldn't be much of an issue. As I see it, Rodgers has four decision to make:

Daniel Agger return?

The Dane came off the bench for the Cardiff game, and with a few senior players missing, experience could be vital against Man City. If Flanagan is not fit, should Agger come into the team at left-back? Even if Flanno makes the cut, perhaps Agger would be the best bet?

Stick with Skrtel and Sakho?

With only two goals conceded in the last three games, Skrtel and Sakho seem to be forming an effective partnership, so there's no real need to change. The only issue is the (seeming) lack of organisation in defence. Neither Skrtel nor Sakho appear to be natural organisers, and this (arguably) cost the Reds a goal against Cardiff City. That notwithstanding, based on Rodgers comments on Thursday, it seems like Sakho is a certain starter. He told reporters:

"I like his [Sakho's] aggression; he first and foremost wants to defend and is aggressive in his marking. He defends the crosses well and he can also play"

Rotate the squad?

The Reds may have injury worries, but Liverpool have some very fresh players in the squad to compensate. The likes of Alberto, Aspas, Toure, and even Moses, have played very little football recently, so if called-upon, they should be fit enough to put in a good shift for the club. Does Rodgers need to rotate, though? I personally don't think so. Keep it simple: Just stick with a winning team.

Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson is not confidence of an LFC victory. Prediction a 2-0 defeat, he told the BBC:

"I just think this is the sort of game where City show not only their ability but also where their power makes a difference. The City steamroller has scored 16 goals in three games against Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham, and might get another outing".

Didi Hamann is excited about the game:

"What a game tonight. Free scoring City vs table toppers LFC. Biggest test yet for Liverpool".

Ex-Red Neil Mellor believes Liverpool can win the game. He tweeted:

"Huge game later at top of the premier league. The way Liverpool and Suarez are playing there is a great chance to end city superb home form"

Michael Owen also believes the Reds may have a chance:

"You'd have to say City are favourites playing at home but it may be a decent time for Liverpool to play them with City missing key players"

Can Liverpool do it? I think so. Aguero is out injured so that is a massive boost for the Reds, and if Suarez, Sterling and Henderson can continue their great attacking form, there's always a chance.

I have to admit, though, that Liverpool's vcontinued ulnerability in the air - especially from set-pieces - is a worry, and with Edin Dzeko upfront this could turn out to be a major problem.

My prediction: 2-2 or 3-2 to Liverpool.

  1. I hope LFC wins. My 2 cents 3-1 for LFC. Would like to see Agger at left back doing some of his enterprising runs to the front. And if LFC is being bullied then bring on Moses. And if Allen has an off day then bring Alberto in. Lucas has to cancel off Toure and Allen against Silva.

  2. I honestly think toure is going to be too quick and powerful for Lucas, set peices to kill us again, 3-1 to city.

  3. 5-2 to City, Yaya and co to rip Liverpoo apart without Aguero.

  4. I think it's goin to be very tuff match and if we to have any chance hendo has to play his best ever game to stop toure and co from getting any momentum up we know 1 decent ball to luis and he can punish there backline

  6. Kompany will have Suarez in his back pocket, Zabaleta's back biatches.

  7. Well here is hoping Suarez makes your defence look ordinary today...

  9. Id stick with the same team whos been playing for the last three weeks, if flanos out then bring kelly in at rb and johnson lb, NOT cissokho. If rodgers goes out there with the same mentality as at arsenal and hull, its a heavy defeat, Im trying to be optimistic but I just cant see how a team wins at etihad right now, dont think it would be tragic to lose there but we could lose some places on the table, a draw or lose sends you fifth or sixth nowadays, if we perform like at spurs we got a chance, but I think city wins this as much as it hurts, maybe a draw which id happily take, but who knows maybe a miracle is about to come again... If we take three or four points from these two games away, we re defo a title contender

  11. everyone is talking about city thrashing us but IMO it is impossible really. despite Arsenal playing good and getting hammered by City, history shows Arsenal have been hammered by teams before. LFC have never been battered in my whole life of being a fan of this team ive not seen us battered. so there will be no change today. even if we were to lose 2-0, that's all it would be because LFC don't get hammered. if were losing 3-0, players will step up to ensure no more goals are conceded. whenever weve conceded more goals, weve always scored them too. everton 3-3, arsenal 4-4 (arshavin), so tbh im not worried about today as we have suarez and our history shows its impossible to be battered. if we overcome City today, no1 should be surprised. should have beat them twice last season if not for mistakes from Skrtel and Reina in the two fixtures

  12. Ermm... You sure? Spurs vs lfc 4-0 couple of years ago!!

  13. No way, Kelly should not even be looked at for this game. Too slow, and we all saw that goal last week. That was his fault. Would rather Toure at RB than Kelly.

  14. my thoughts exactly :)

  15. nobody can have suarez in his pocket - hes the best player atm

  16. ouch I forgot that. one-off. this current team is not allowed to concede more than 5 goals. its an outrage. this match there will be chances both ways and we will catch city on the counter. and mark my words Luis will take his chances. he showed that all season with complete ruthlessness

  17. its only small clubs with physical players who can contain suarez. they will put literally 9 players on him and have one forward up front. this is what happened against Hull, against Oldham, but not City who have quality players who will play their own game not thinking just about suarez. suarez WILL score against city. how many is the question

  18. So that means we can concede five thats fine but no more than that? Five is enough to get battered, as for suarez is true but he misses chances as well, many of them you know that, hopefully he doesnt have a day off, like he usually has againts big teams, if you look the stats he never does in big games what he does vs average teams like wba norwich fulham etc. Thats a concern for me, hopefully he changes that today.

  19. he can score from anywhere kompany cant always be where he is. hart is going to make some silly misstakes again - will be nice to see how lazy kolarov deals with pacy sterling ... tbh i expect us to win this game today - manc have no soul they lost it to their sheikh! im not afraid, i just can´t wait ! :-)

  20. hull 2:0 up against manu hahahhaha :-)

    ReplyDelete
  21. nuh im just saying. were it to happen LFC fans will not be happy. and that be true but he always plays good and never get a bad match rating against the top teams so its not a concern. I know wat suarez is capable of. he wont disappoint even if he don't score, which he will.

  22. farout dude you jinxed it!

  23. It will be a very tight game. City 4-5 Liverpool, Suarez to score the winner at the last minute.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm not watching it, but it sounds like Hull just overwhelmed themselves, and have buckled it. F**king typical of a small team.

  25. Looking at some of the comments , it looks like no point in liverpool turning up ! But disrespect us and Suarez at your own perrell, keep spouting your mouth off and the fall is greater !

    ReplyDelete
  26. im sorry - its 2 : 3 manu now..

    ReplyDelete
  27. just because two good teams meet it doesnt mean they will score so much ..

  28. LS in VK pocket? Oh you make me laugh.

  29. I was being ironic.

  30. I say we just shoot the whole Man city team, That is one way to definately stop them. They have an embarrassment of wealth when it comes to players. Rodgers has done a lot to improve the Liverpool squad since last year.

We now posses a better bench but the biggest difference between Man City and Liverpool remains the quality of players on the bench. Man City still have a lot of quality talent that can be called up from the bench to help change the nature of a game. Love to see Liverpool possess more super subs in the future. It would give Rodgers a chance to keep the pressure up on an opponent during a decisive match.

I would love Liverpool to obviously pool of a victory but against this opponent i won't hold my breath.

  31. 4-2-3-1

    Johnson - Skrtel - Sakho - Agger
    Lucas - Allen
    Sterling - Henderson - Coutinho
    Suarez

    ReplyDelete
  32. The fact that BR does not have many players to rotate with is a problem for us. City, even with all their injuries in defense, have enough players with quality to bring in. Again I feel as if our players might get out-muscled very easily by city in 50-50 plays, but hopefully Suarez, Coutinho, Henderson and Sterling have enough strength in them to give us a thrilling 90 minutes. I don't see how we will win this one, I really hope we do, but we would be very lucky to walk away with a point.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I am predicting 3-1 to city, they will be 2 up by half time. However, if we score first we are winning this :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. No need to change the team, but they will need to step up once again. Remember what happend last time Lawro predicted a 2-0 loss... so I'm not worried to much :) Lfc will win 3-4 or 2-4!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Aguero injured would have been great if we had a great organized defense that wouldn't have to deal with a superplayer today. We have a defense that concedes sloppy goals, so it almost makes no difference. They score goals from wing passes to box, we can stop that, but we will probably not; they will probably continue .

So that puts in the luck factor: If they miss and we score...

    Surprise me Rodgers.

  36. I always knew a 2-0 early lead for Hull would have been a bloody fluke anyway, and expected reality to quickly catch up with them in that game.

  37. And the ref and linesmen were generous to you, back in your box boy.
