'He's a future star' - LFC chase exciting €20m midfielder hailed by Xavi

Over the last year, Liverpool have been linked with almost a dozen Barcelona players, including the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Cristian Tello, and Martin Montoya, and the latest Barca player on the Reds' radar is (reportedly) 21-year old midfielder Sergei Roberto, who is also, inevitably, wanted by Tottenham Hotspur.

According to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo:

* Liverpool have 'made enquiries' with Roberto's agent over the possibility of a transfer.

* Roberto has a €20m buyout clause in his contract.

Sergi who? Yes, that's exactly what I thought. Liverpool's midfield is (arguably) in need of an overhaul, but experienced, established players capable of making a quick impact are required, not more young, 'promising' players who may or may not come good in five years.

Plus, €20m for a player with only fifteen games of senior experience in La Liga? Get real. Players that come through Barcelona's famed 'La Masia' academy always seem to have a ridiculously inflated buy-out clause, but I'd be surprised if FSG sanctioned more than £8m for this kind of purchase.

Having said that, though - with Suso farmed out on loan, and the perennial bench-bound Luis Alberto brought in for £6.8m, I doubt FSG would give Rodgers that kind of money for another untested Spanish midfielder.

Former Barca boss Tito Villanova is, however, a fan of Roberto, and prior to his departure from the Nou Camp, he told reporters:

"It's good to know that Barca have [Sergi Roberto] for the long term. He's in a position to play more games with Barca now. He could possibly play more for the first team, but there are very good players in his position."

Barcelona legend Xavi is also convinced of Roberto's talent. In an August press conference, he enthused:

"He [Thiago Alcantara] has extraordinary talent, but he has decided to leave, but there are others, like Sergi Roberto, who is one of our future stars"

  2. Babel is highlighted and Moses is not? Neither is Sakho and I have no idea why Jainie does not see his qualities. As for Ilori and Alberto well surely I don't have to go in to it much. Are we saying that Rafa and Houlilier never signed any young players not yet ready for first team? Look at the other players in the 05/06 window or truth is Rodgers has signed more young players and that should be taken note of.

  3. I thought Sahin moaned about playing further up the field? As I vaguely recall him moaning about Rodgers wanting him as a no.10 player.

In his first spell at Dortmund, he rarely played high up the pitch. And in his second spell, it is the same. He either plays deep or as a standard central midfielder.

Rodgers didn't play him in his ideal position. Tough ask to expect Sahin to do well in a new league, in a different position.

  4. Mata and Pastore need to be the players with whom the rumors needs to get heated up and not these kids who are supposed to be them. Its about time we go for proven quality for AM and DM with Jaun Mata and Lars Bender being at the top for both the positions for us and Pastore and Diame as back up if the deals fail to materialize.
