Transfer Update: Valencia plan January swap-deal for €8m LFC star. Good idea...?

In mid-October, Portuguese newspaper Super Deporte reported that La Liga giants Valencia are interested in making a January loan move for Liverpool's summer signing Tiago Ilori. Speculation has intensified over the last week, and now it appears that Los Che may have a quasi-swap deal in mind in a bid to push through the deal.

The Super Deporte article claimed:

"Valencia are looking for a central defender and Tiago Ilori is being considered.

"He has been observed by officials of the club, and Valencia plan to make an offer during the January transfer window"

According to Italian newspaper Tutto Mercato today:

* Valencia are willing to allow LFC to sign Aly Cissokho permanently in January
* To do this, however, they want LFC to agree to a deal for Ilori.

Ilori signed for the Reds in an €8m deal on September 2nd, and it would certainly be a major shock if he ended up leaving the club a mere four months later (!)

Such a move would be unprecedented, and I can't think of many top-flight clubs who've sold summer signings after such a short space of time. In my view, the purchase of Ilori could be viewed as a mistake:

* With Skrtel, Sakho, Agger and Toure vying for places, it will be a miracle if Ilori gets any significant game-time this season, especially with the reduced number of games this season.

* Despite rampant speculation, it seems unlikely that either Skrtel or Agger will leave during the January transfer window.

* If Ilori spends the bulk of this season on the bench, or in the reserves, his personal development will (arguably) be stunted.

* Competition in the squad is great, but fighting against FOUR established centre-backs is unhealthy competition.

* Did Liverpool really need to buy Ilori over the summer? Was it an essential purchase?

* Me hay - as Rodgers insists - be 'one for the future', but I doubt Ilori sees it that way. Like all players, he will want to play, and if he doesn't, human nature dictates that he will get frustrated.

Going out on loan is the only way Ilori will get regular game-time this season, and it would be good for the young defender's development, though if that happens, it will (IMO) be a tacit admission of poor-planning on LFC's part.

I sincerely doubt that Ilori came to Anfield expecting to be shunted out on loan four months after signing. As for Cissokho - he's hardly played for LFC so far, but I'm not convinced he's a long-term solution for Liverpool. Is he an upgrade on Jose Enrique? Debatable, though that may change over the next couple of months.

  1. Cant believe this story, no way we're selling him on a permanent basis (which is what i got from the quotes). Can see a loan deal for him somewhere though. But as for the permanent deal, it's right up there with the story over the weekend of Moyes being "confident" of landing Bale this summer :)
As for cissohko, need to see more of him obviously, but i'm sitting on the fence.

Seriously a "mistake" to sign him NO. He has talent if we didn't sign him then either Chelsea of spurs would of. Because they both wanted him, he for the future. Going out on loan with benefit him. End off. None story really :)

  3. I actually think the Ilori deal was lined up in case we didn't get Sakho and one of either Skrtle or Agger left. For some reason I don't think the club were sure we would actually get Sakho and Ilori was a just in case buy. I may be wrong but isn't it a little weird that we bought as many defenders as we did?

  4. Going out on loan makes sense unless Agger moves on (hopefully that won't happen). I'd like to see him stay in the premier league and get used to the physicality. I've still no idea why we signed so many centre backs, but hey-ho, we're third in the league and we'll be top on Saturday evening after SaS have torn the gooners apart, so I'm not going to criticise!

  5. Disagree totally. It is only a mistake, potentially, from Llori's perspective. Llori was insurance...the same as Sakho and Cissoko. We now have a strong defense and that was the need. I would not be shocked at all to see Llori go after 4 months. I just wish Valencia had an AM to deal for, but unfortunately they don't. A loan with a summer option to buy would be best because it would leave us options in case one of the big four left. If Agger leaves in January, then Llori stays...end of story. If Toure calls it a career in the summer...again Llori stays.
But we still need another good AM.

  8. Ilori is a very highly rated player. Even Chelsea were after him but LFC sealed the deal. These rumours about LFC wanting to sell Ilori are a load of BS.

  9. LFC may have felt that they had to tie up the talent they see in Illori before he becomes hot property - lets hope the scouts picked a winner. LFC probably have a long term view with integrating him into the team and would not be surprised to see him go out on loan for a period of time. LFC's squad restructure is very intriguing in the way they are attempting to balance between the immediate demands to be competitive (and making the lucrative UCL) and building a team that will (hopefully) become a domestic powerhouse as the succession of young talent matures.

  13. Poor article, a deal has already been struck that if Liverpool want him Cissokho can move there in the summer for €4.5m so why would Rodgers exchange Llori who cost €8m and was highly sought after and thought of as one the next generation of stars. What a load of trash

  14. I think it would be good for the youngster. Don't want him getting disheartened by not getting first team games. But Toure and the boys are doing well. Who would you drop for him?!!

  15. PS. I'm talking about a Loan deal obviously!!

  16. Ludicrous, what was the point in signing a promising centreback if it means we have to sell him in order to get a left back, it's counter productive. Either Ilori is developing in the reserves and if he proves himself as Sakho seems to have done there'd certainly be a role, perhaps not in central defence given the form and competition there. It may be worth considering deploying him in another capacity, if that proves a good fit, or loan him out. If we are foolish enough to sell him, which I doubt, it'd look like another ill-conceived panic buy, and seeing as the last one, Carroll turned out to be a fiasco, it would be wise to evaluate the wisdom of the transfer both in the short and long term.

  17. Illori at right back and GJ at left back. Cissoko not good enough with the ball

  18. Permanent deal for Cissokho in exchange for Ilori to Valencia on loan. That's the best they are going to get.

  19. Skrtel and Agger will not make it past their 30's at LFC especially being on high wages. Both are 28 so time is ticking for them. Toure only has a 2 year contract at LFC. Ilori is only 20 and surely has been bought for the future and we beat many big teams for his signature so there is nothing wrong with the club thinking ahead with signings like Ilori.

  21. Non starter. This won't happen. He might go out on loan some where.
Plus lets remember we are only 10 games in to the season, there is still plenty of time for him to make some appearances, and i'm sure he wasn't told he would be a regular starter when he signed.

  22. No sale!
Loan maybe. Let's see what he can do first. I think skrtels resurgence has created this headache. But maybe skrtel would not be at this level without all this new comp.

  25. As you say. I doubt he will get sold after just being recruited, but if he is the sort of player who requires games in order to progress, loaning him out is likely to be in the best interests of the player and the club.

  26. If this kid has the speed and skill as was advertised, get him minutes at DM or on the wings to get some runs and stop some opposition advances. Probably won't see anything vs Arsenal but in weaker games, why not? We also should use him in any non league games that come down the road....
