In December, Liverpool legend Steve Nicol described AC Milan star Stephan El-Shaarawy as the 'Luis Suarez of Milan', and reports this week suggest that the Reds are considering a January move for the 20-year old striker.
According to the Liverpool Echo:
"The Reds are being linked with a move for AC Milan frontman Stephan El Shaarawy. While the 20-year-old says he is happy at the San Siro, but Man City and Borussia Dortmund also thought to be potential suitors".
Milan signed El Shaarawy - nicknamed 'the Pharoah' - for €20m in 2011, and speaking to ESPN a few months ago, Nicol heaped praise on the prolific youngster:
"El-Shaarawy is turning into the Luis Suarez of Milan. Without him, goodness knows where they would be".
Nicol is not the only one impressed; football luminaries across Europe are lining up to praise the youngster. Italy boss Cesare Prandelli recently enthused:
"I do not remember seeing a second striker like El Shaarawy. Someone who contributes so much to the team defensively".
Milan Head Coach Massimiliano Allegri added:
"I hope that El Shaarawy keeps on doing well both for us and the national side. He manages himself well, and he's a balanced lad. He's grown very quickly and nobody was expecting it".
Is El Shaarawy better than Suarez? Milan CEO Adriano Galliani (indirectly) seems to think so, as he recently told Gazetta Dello Sport:
"El Shaarawy is playing better than we expected him to. I don’t know how many forwards of his age are scoring goals so consistently. The only other player like him in the world is Neymar"
El Shaarawy grabbed 19 goals/6 assists for Milan last season, but this year, he's been forced onto the sidelines after suffering a hairline fracture in his foot, and when asked last week about his future at Milan, he told Gazzetta:
“I’ve done some great things in a Milan shirt, but I’ve also done some bad things. I just want to be judged by what I do on the pitch though. My mind is only on Milan. I have already stated on several occasions that I want to stay here.”
The chances of Liverpool signing El Shaarawy seem extremely slim, and the transfer would probably be prohibitive. Indeed, Milan rejected a massive offer for the youngster over the summer, and in July, Galliani revealed details of the offer. He told the 7 Gold television network.
"We were not tempted by the offer, but we couldn't exactly hide it from him [El Shaarawy]. He saw the figures, but did not want to budge. How big was the offer? More than €30m. He said the money he had was more than sufficient, that he is a Milan fan and [that he] did not want to leave. I kissed him on the cheek and that was that".
I can't see FSG shelling out €30m+ on a 20-year old, unless, of course, he's brought in to replace Luis Suarez. I'm a fan of El Shaarawy, but if the Reds are willing to spend that amount of money on an attacking player, I'd prefer someone with a bit more experience.

Why wouldn't FSG pay that much? They paid 20 million for hendo. So I'm sure if BR said he wanted him they would back him, he would look good up top with Suarez and Sturridge. We still have the money from the Mkhitaryan, costa willian deal too, which was at 25 million.
ReplyDeleteWould be a good investment. What he's doing at 20 a lot can be expected from him in years to come - plus I'm sure he could sell on for a high fee.
ReplyDeleteMight be young, but is a regular started for one of Italy's biggest clubs, plays for their national team, and scores goals - 16 in Serie A for a 20 year old is a good haul.
Here is the real reason ferguson does not rafa, when Liverpool won in Istanbul ferguson sent him a diagram of how his tactics changed the game in the second half - rafa publicly ridiculed it - deflated go, so there you are.
ReplyDeleteThis one stinks of newspaper speculation. I would love to see him sign though, he's a quality player. I would like to see us spend big on a player this January It could be a real sign of intent to our players and opposing teams, much like the Ozil signing at Arsenal.
ReplyDeleteI can't see Liverpool being first in the queue for El Shaarawy.
ReplyDeleteIf we bought him it would be a major statement- moreso than Mikhi, Willian and Costa (bearing in mind their relative statuses when we tried to buy them rather than now).
If we are in contention for Top 4 in January, I'll be curious to see if players are willing to sign on for the stretch run.
ReplyDeleteEven more exciting... if we stay firm and make the CL next year, I'm curious to see the quality of players willing to come here then that weren't this past summer.
If you are a young talented player then lfc with sturridge suarez coutinho is perfect .Hope we keep all our transfer targets quiet incase avb is around. Why not send out a few mock targets like 40 million for tello
ReplyDeleteIn that video he scores and gives the ball away a bunch of times...is there no better footage?
ReplyDeleteHow do they come up with these stories? Like this would ever, ever, happen.
ReplyDeleteIF that happens, I hope Rodgers has a plan B this time. Just in case his primary target decides to join someone else. Not like last summer.
ReplyDeleteIf you're referring to this past summer, I think we had several plan B options... Henrikh, Costa, Willian, Mata were all rumored.
ReplyDeleteThe first summer in charge, I agree completely... we were vastly undermanned because of some scrupulous selling and not reinforcing the team.
Since last January though, our transfers have improved leaps and bounds... Relatively speaking of course.
Get a world class attacking midfielder please with 15+ goals per season.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see him at LFC but i can't see it really shame.
ReplyDeleteI can't either but if Luis does go, I don't see too many other players who can fill the void as well as El Shaarawy can. Pretty obvious replacement in my eyes as we'd be able to afford him and others with the money. And considering what he's doing at 20, the skys the limit for what he could become!
ReplyDeleteI have confidence in nicol's judgement, because he's the hardest f**cker on the planet to please, other than my girlfriend.
ReplyDeleteWe want SSS upfront
ReplyDeleteSuarez Sturidge Shaarawy
Come on Liverpool
You'll Never Walk Alone (YNWA)
no his hair style makes me want to vomit
ReplyDeletelets sign sanchez
ReplyDeleteOnly consider it if we put in a hair cut clause in his contract.
ReplyDeleteA few years ago I would have totally agreed, I just don't think Sanchez is the same player since moving to Barcelona. Still, he'd be an upgrade on Aspas and Moses I guess. The money may be prohibitive though.
ReplyDeleteIt's not going to happen.
ReplyDeleteI agree...and every time I have watched him play he is a flurry of activity but always manages to lose possession because he runs out of ideas...all velocity and no vector.
ReplyDeleteWould be nice but is he durable? Wish we would keep our targets to ourselves so we don't give others our ideas.......for the money we should sell someone off, like Allen
