£8m LFC target admits he's 'honoured' by Prem 'interest'. Anfield-bound...?

Last week, multiple reports claimed that Brendan Rodgers is interested in signing Red Bull Saltzburg central defender Martin Hinteregger, but according to the player himself, there are only two clubs tracking him at the moment, and neither is Liverpool.

According to the Liverpool Echo:

"Liverpool are reportedly battling to sign Austria Under-21 ace Martin Hinteregger.

"Liverpool and Arsenal both have a long-standing interest in him".

When asked last night about interest from the Premier League, Hinteregger told Italian newspaper Tuttosport:

"I confirm, there is interest in me from Manchester United and a top Italian club. I am honoured, I honestly did not expect that. My goal is to stay here, but in any case I will talk to my agent and consider whether a transfer might be beneficial."

In a July pre-season friendly against Schalke, €8m-rated Hinteregger scored an amazing 70-yard goal:

Of course, failing to reference LFC doesn't mean the club is not tracking Hinteregger; it could just mean that the Reds have not yet made official contact. In any event, quite why Liverpool would be interested in yet another central defender is anyone's guess.

The club is bursting at the seams with defenders right now, and even if Martin Skrtel leaves in January, Tiago Ilori is still waiting in the wings, and I doubt he'd be impressed to see another central defender in the same age-range (Hinteregger is 21) brought to the club so soon after signing-in at Anfield.

Another central defender would mean Ilori - who is younger than Hinteregger - would potentially have to compete against FIVE players, which would be a tough ask for any young player.

  1. That was some goal :) But it's pointless in us going for him, not like we need young centre backs or anything :P

  2. Toure, Skrtel, Agger, Sakho, Ilori, Kelly, Wisdom, Perez, to name a few, and there are more. Dont see why we would be looking to add to that.

  3. I still believe Llori may eventually take over Lucas's spot down the road with his pace and tactical awareness. Why couldn't he play there?

  4. Forget any more defenders, we're sorted. Start getting the money together for Honda and a DM.

  5. Get better ones. Get rid of the less good ones. This is called improving the squad. It's what's not been happening at Liverpool for god knows how long. Embrace it.

  6. I think this is just one of the thousands of transfer rumours journalists make up when they have nothing to write about. I often wonder how often their 'sources' are actually themselves. We won't sign him nothing to see here

  7. There will be a day, a day when Liverpool will sign great players to play around great prospects that are already in the club. Someday we will splash the cash on impact players, hopefully this January.

You may say I am a dreamer, but I am not the only one. ~~~

  8. Agree...and that was a great goal! I'll bet that keeper will mind his positioning better in the future.
