Over the summer, several sources - including Sky Sports Italia and Italian football show SportItalia - claimed that Liverpool put in a bid for Brazilian midfielder Jorge Luiz Frello Filho - aka Jorginho - who currently plays for Serie B side Hellas Verona. Nothing came of the alleged interest, but new reports suggest that the Reds are still monitoring the young attacker.
According to Italian newspaper Tutto Sport:
* Liverpool, Everton, Chelsea and Man City remain interested.
* There's a possibility that Jorginho may leave in the January transfer window.
In a July broadcast of Italian sports show 'SportItalia', journalist Alfredo Pedulla - formerly of Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport - confirmed that Liverpool had put in an €8m offer for Jorginho. Soon after that, Pedulla further claimed that:
* Verona President, Mauricio Setti, is willing to sell if the price is right.
* The asking price for Jorginho is €10m.
* Setti met with Liverpool reps in London to discuss the transfer.
A few details about this little-known player:
* 21-years old.
* Born in Brazil but grew up in Italy.
* Came through the Verona youth academy.
* Chose to represent Italy at international level.
* Joined Verona last year from Serie D side AC Sambonifacese.
* Would be eligible for a work permit straight away.
* One cap for Italy's U21 side.
Jorginho can play in several different positions (attacking midfield; Defensive mid; Central-mid playmaker, and Right wing), so Rodgers' interest is hardly surprising. Additionally, with 73 appearances in the last two seasons, the Brazilian has a good level of experience for his age, and his great form last season helped Verona to win promotion to Serie A.
After the collapse of the Mkhitaryan, Costa and Willian deals, some Reds fans will not be appeased by bargain-basement signings from the lower reaches of Serie A. However, if Jorginho ultimately signs for Liverpool, and has a similar impact to fellow Brazilian Coutinho, the doubters will quickly be silenced, I'm sure.
When asked this week about his future at Verona, Jorginho made it clear that he's open to a move away. He told reporters:
"If it's true that there is interest [from other clubs] I will be more than happy"
With 3 goals/1 assist in 7 appearances, Jorginho has hit the ground running this season. Worth a bid...?

I never throw some names in my comments but surely Diame for the rumoured 3.5m release clause and Honda on a FREE should be a priority. Then all that is left is a striker which IMO is not urgent if we have Aspas and Borini. I would rather upgrade on quality than just add numbers to the squad.
ReplyDeleteAren't Hellas in Serie A right now? Such a mighty club once with one of the greatest players never truly recognized by the world in its ranks - Preben Elkjaer Larsen. Great great player.
ReplyDeleteI think in January we should buy Honda on the free and try for Diame. Then In the summer, we should buy Luis Muriel as 3rd choice but quality striker. sell borini and aspas, and should suarez leave we should replace him with Loic Remy and HK.
ReplyDeleteCould be worth a bid, however I do feel like we need a more established player in the midfield position rather than a 'one for the future' type player.
ReplyDeleteSomeone who is more likely to make an immediate impact, not to say this guy couldn't, but, for example, someone like Mata, would be a lot more likely to make an immediate impact. Although I don't see us signing Mata.
Also, well done to LFC for signing up their first ever Indian player- 14yo by the name of Yan Dhanda.
ReplyDeleteyes they are in serie A now, they got promoted this year and as I live in italy I've watched some games they are doing really good. A win against AC Milan first week of serie A. As for Jorginho yes he is a good player whith a lot of potential but I'm not sure he can be the next coutinho, then I saw JK wrote he can play as DM nah he is not at that level IMO he is not strong enough to do so maybe as a playmaker who knows ?
ReplyDeleteAlso, why does Arsenal go back to the top of the league with an identical GD? What would happen if, after the last game of the premier league, we're level with Arsenal at first place with same points AND GD?
ReplyDeleteI think its on goals scored, and Arsenal have scored 3 more than us.
ReplyDeleteOk, fair enough.
ReplyDeleteJust have to make sure we beat them twice!
ReplyDeleteI know this is unrelated to this article but I just saw an interview from John Barnes basically saying that he wants to join the coaching staff if the club wants him, just to let you know Jaimie :-) If you wanted to write an article about it
ReplyDeleteI can't believe LFC couldn't put an extra 2m to land him in the summer! From all the price tags and club's prices demands i've heard this is one of the most down to earth request's ever! 10m is just a justified price for him.
ReplyDeleteI know this kid very well for i have sympathy for the club Verona, he will have a big big future. He can do better than Lucas staright away, or maybe maybe after half a year of getting used to the rhythm of the PL.
I would love him to come; he will have eventually he same scale of influence that Strurridge and Coutinho has.
Hope we don't miss out.
Having said that, we need two more midfielders. I say Van Bruymen and Pastore.
He has other qualities that completely compensates for strength. The way way our back midfield looks right now it needs more of top interspersion abilities and men marking, speed, and passing. !!! notice that. i truly believe it's a crucial point.
ReplyDeleteHe is simply a great DM, CM. The first time i heard Rodgers was targeting him i said it has a great flow to the Coutinho Struddige signings.
And ya, i can't see how any team can say no to K Honda for free, and that's why i don't put my hopes up that he might actually chose us. Though his a player with a head on his shoulders and might see positives in joining LFC.
ReplyDeleteWe need a midfield revamp, Gerrard and Lucas drag us back with our play.
ReplyDeleteyou´re definitely spot on here
ReplyDeleteWe should make sure to beat every single team twice (well except Southampton and swans) ...how about that :P ?
ReplyDeletewhat has happened to the young german striker we signed ??
ReplyDeleteRemember' this is how we lot it to them in 1989 :-(
ReplyDeleteYeah worth a bid as is Abel Hernandez at Palermo and Luis Muriel
ReplyDeleteHarry kewell?!!!!
ReplyDeleteI think Milan is very close on agreeing with Honda
ReplyDeleteHe said they aren't the only club and would take his time to consider all the options available. I am sure LFC can attract him if we're at the top come Jan.
ReplyDeletei'm not one of the people who thinks Eriksen is that great and that is a really big mistake that we didn't sign him - just saying.
ReplyDeleteNo i think Rodgers in that case will think attack and will have one more player he can fully trust in, and will drop either Lucas, Henderson, Moses, or, who knows, Gerrard; No way he will bench Coutinho.
Van Bruymen to replace Gerrard!
ReplyDeletebtw: u21's can beat Rodgers's team at certain days i believe. They're not as good but they play much better, as a team at least.
allright: bender, van bruymen, pastore, coutinho, suarez, sturridge.
ReplyDeleteHe went in today for u21's after a long injury, at 70th min or something. Had a couple of chances, one crossbar. looks decent.
ReplyDeleteAssuming he is not strong enough and you're right there's no point of signing him
ReplyDeleteLots of comments on acquiring Honda on FREE. He will demand a hefty salary and a sign-on bonus. Expect at least 20 million over 3 years. You have to look at the whole package; transfer fee + wages.
ReplyDeletewe have suso dont want to be linked with any cams
ReplyDeleteI say push for the Champions League with this squad and go for Gundogan next summer. That guy is an absolute stud and can play anywhere across the midfield.
ReplyDeleteI disagree that Mascherano was as strong as an ox but he was like a pit bull. He just kept coming back for more and he wasn't afraid to go in full on in to a tackle which complemented Alonso's "calm try and stay on your feet" play making role. It was really the best midfield in the world!
ReplyDeleteJust look at Joe Cole for an example on that.
ReplyDeleteIf everything is the same it goes to a playoff. It almost happened between Newcastle and United until Keegan seemed to implode on himself.
ReplyDeleteyou are correct; if the goal difference is the same, goals for counts. pity the didn't leave it as it used to be......goals for divided by goals against.
ReplyDeleteDamn straight. Shame someone decided Gareth Barry was what we really needed...
ReplyDeleteHe came on as a sub in last night's U21 5-0 demolition of Spurs: he was unlucky, too, not to score.
ReplyDeleteWe need a midfielder who can break up opposition attacks and someone who is going to replace Stevie G when he retires in a couple of years.
ReplyDeleteI honestly feel that, if we had Alonso and Mascherano in our midfield (or players of an equal calibre) then we'd be shoe-ins for the title this season.
Can this guy be our new mascherano? It'd be interesting to see if i) - we actually go for him and ii) - where he'll play.
I'd also like the rumours of Pastore to be true as I believe this guy could take us to the next level and help turn us into genuine title contenders.
I have to agree with your comments of Alonso and Mascherano in our midfield.
ReplyDeleteWe have more chances of getting Sven Bender than Lars Bender
ReplyDeleteI think it is because They Scored more Goals that is why they top. not sure though
ReplyDeleteJust a thought Nothing to do with the article. What do you guys think about bidding for Song. He is not playing regularly at Barca and he can be a good DMF for us.
ReplyDeleteWell, I doubt Klopp would let go off Sven because even though he has a lot of quality guys I still feel Sven is an important part of his squad and BVB are CL finalists so I doubt he'd want to come to us.
ReplyDeleteSaid the same myself during the summer Kevin. Knows the PL, has an eye for a pass and laid on how many for RVP in his last year at Arsenal. Would be a smashing purchase.
ReplyDeleteIf we get bender...Anyone up for an all night bender with me?
ReplyDeleteThank you colie he will keep Lucas on his toes. I am not an expert but i think he can be a very good purchase for LFC
ReplyDeleteOOPS I got confused Dev, my apologies . You are very right about Lars Bender. But what do you think of Song of Barca. That talent is being wasted at barca
ReplyDeleteCount me in mate. :D
ReplyDeleteSong would probably go to Arsenal as that's where his position is still not covered and it'll be easier for him to get settled. Signing him for 15m would be okay but to sign Lars Bender would be a coup and Diame at 3.5m would be a good addition to cover and competition for places.
