'I can leave': Dortmund want 'excellent' LFC star to replace £35m man. Let him go...?

Despite only just returning from a 10-game ban for biting Branislav Ivanovic, Reds MD Ian Ayre is already talking up the possibility of a new (undeserved) contract, but he is in fantasy land if he really believes that the Uruguayan - hailed as 'excellent' and 'fantastic' by Brendan Rodgers after his comeback against Man Utd - plans to stay at Liverpool for the long-term. Suarez spent the summer desperately trying to ditch LFC, and the transfer circus will inevitably start up again in January.

One of the clubs that could top the speculation list is Borussia Dortmund, and according to Italian newspaper TuttoSport, the Bundesliga giants are lining up Suarez to replace the outgoing Robert Lewandowski. The report states:

"Borussia Dortmund have set their sights on Liverpool's Luis Suarez to replace Robert Lewandowski. The club plans to sign Suarez in January, which would allow him more time to acclimatise to the Bundesliga"

£35m-rated Lewandowski seems certain to leave, and when asked last night if he would confirm a move to Bayern in January, he told Sport 1:

"Yes, because I can officially sign the new contract in January. Normally, I can only reveal it officially in January. At this moment, it is still too early and we'll have to wait a bit. But I think, I can leave in January."

Given their massive success in recent years, and ongoing Champions League status, Dortmund is an enticing destination for Suarez, and if the club comes in for the Uruguayan in January, I have no doubt he will jump at the move. It's not Real Madrid, but Suarez proved over the summer that he's willing to go anywhere just to get away from Liverpool.

It all depends on the price, however, but if Dortmund put in a £45m-£50m bid, will the Reds be able to refuse...?

  1. Dortmund wont bid 50 mill no way i doubt they have that much to spend and i can see Suarez getting his move to Real in the summer window he will wait for that.

  2. Personally, I think it would be foolish to sell him in the January window. Summer maybe, but not January. Our squad is a little bit thin on creative players, demonstrated by the massive hole left in our midfield with Coutinho's absence. We need time to replace him, so it seems daft to move him on halfway through the season.

  3. Suarez will leave but not in January...unless there is an offer that is too big to refuse. That might happen as he won't be cup tied in Europe.

  4. They wont get as much money from lewandowski as they would need to spend for suarez ... And Dortmund would never spend that much money, that's absolutely nonsense and against dortmunds philosophy ... No way

    ReplyDelete
  5. lewandowski will be leaving on a free transfer, and even if bayern desperately wanted him sooner they wouldnt have to pay too much because dortmund know he will otherwise just leave for free anyway. unless dortmund sell someone like gundogan or reus they wont splash out on a world class player like suarez

  6. suarez is gonna cost 60m or more in january
dormount is a well run club
and jamie they are getting £0 for lewondowski

  7. Dortmund highly unlikely to sell Lewandowski in January, the only period where they can get a fee for him. After that, he is off in the summer for free, unless Dortmund get him to sign a extension which is highly unlikely to happen. He is most likely off to Bayern on a free in the summer.

  8. With his movement, on and off the ball, he could fit in at Dortmund really well. Dortmund need to replace Lewandowski sooner or later. Not saying they can't afford it but I just don't see them spending that much on a player though.

  9. I thought Lewandowski signed a new contract when he realised Dortmund wouldn't sell him

  10. I think it would be a little classless if Lewandowski went to Bayern. As if you would not want to play in front of the Dortmund crowd. You never know though, Spurs can't seem to put a foot wrong at the moment and might snap him up! By the way Siggurdsson has scored again, so much for the 11 reasons not to sign him or whatever.

I wouldn't mind seeing Suarez leave after his actions and comments recently but the sad reality is that I was so relieved he was back for the United game and upcoming games. We definitely need his commitment on the pitch and goals and without him and Coutinho we look so lacklustre. Don't think we can rely on Aspas as he has faded away so much and Rodgers has not got it right so far IMO regarding tactics with Hendo out wide, 4 centre backs...And it's 50/50 in terms of Rodgers successes in the market, I'm not too optimistic about what we would do with the cash from Suarez.

  11. And then the question is... if we stay in that contention (and dareisay, make it), will Luis want to stay?

  12. theres also evey chance we will be mid table

    ReplyDelete
  13. AGreed.....its just not happening theres more chance of us signing ronaldo

  14. 25 million plus Gundogan and you've got yourself a deal!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think its a foregone conclusion him going to Bayern.

Siggy has played well in first half as well as the goal but Spurs faded in the second half. Torres, dearie me. Not the sending off but the finishing just isn't there anymore.

  16. Dont think they are getting anything Jamie or am i mistaken.

    ReplyDelete
  17. He got a pay rise but not a extension.

    ReplyDelete
  18. No need to refuse. Foreign club and the right money = sale. So long as everything is done promptly and we can secure a replacement there will be no hesitation for anyone involved.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yip, Lewondowski's contract is up at the end of the season and will go for free to Bayern.

    ReplyDelete
  20. His contract is up at the end of the season which means Bayern are getting Lewandowski for NADA.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I agree regarding Lewandowski, I just find that whole situation disappointing though. To me, Bayern isn't as attractive as Dortmund is, I like them a lot and from the outside looking in it's probably easy to say what I'm saying.

I'm just pointing out that Siggy is a decent player and those 11 reasons not to sign him were a bit bitter. I only watched the first half and followed the second half online but I think Torres is a disgrace. 50m, what a joke.

  22. Not gonna happen.

2 things need to happen for Suarez to leave in January. 1) Very little hope of a Champions league spot 2) big big offer, to a club of Suarez's liking. Otherwise no dice.

Should Liverpool make CL at the end of the season, a pay raise for Suarez is in order if they want to retain his services. It is deserved, it's paying the market rate for a player of his talent - efficiency wages. Liverpool have had him at a discount for the past couple years. If CL is achieved, good chances he'll stay, as long as there is a pay raise, otherwise, he'll go for sure.

What's interesting is that for all the moaning over the past few weeks, there hasn't been any complaints on Suarez's performance against united. If he was rusty against united (away), and still managed 8 shots, 4 dribbles, 4 key passes, just think of what he's capable of against Sunderland tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Torres wasn't bad at all, he moved well, set up a wrongfully disallowed goal, got some good shots, and set up some good plays. His sending off was a joke.

I'm not fan, but he played well today.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Everyone out celebrating today's results?

    Feeling encouraged yet????

    ReplyDelete
  25. Nobody is crowing until we get the three points available at Sunderland.
Too many opportunities like this to climb the table have been passed up in the past

    ReplyDelete
  26. Lewandowski is leaving on a free when his contract expires next summer, So Dortmund will get zilch.

    ReplyDelete
  27. If we are, then we need him to leave in order to rebuild. He won't want to stay anyway

    ReplyDelete
  28. We could get three points, win by 4, go top of the table and some people would still find something to complain about.

    ReplyDelete
  29. He showed intensity which is good for him. Seemed to be enjoying his football. I often think it's all in his attitude.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Sunderland have no manager, and can't play their star striker (Borini :P), plus Suarez is back, tops we go. Now to make it a perfect day, Aresenal lose.

Either way, MU is 12, behind Cardiff, it is a great day!

    ReplyDelete
  31. yes is the short answer, the reds can refuse lol

    ReplyDelete
  32. There'll be no complaints from me if we do. We SHOULD, but City should have buried Villa.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yeah but city have lost to Cardiff and Villa, United to WBA. Doesn't make the loss the SH and tie with Swansea seem that bad.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Liverpool had him at a discount?

    ReplyDelete
  35. He is on peanuts at Dortmund. Purely financial reason.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Considering their last manager, i would be more confident if they still had him...

    ReplyDelete
  37. Yup - he's worth more than his wages, how many 30 goal strikers were on a salary of $120k a week last year? What does Rooney, Aguero, Hazard, Torres, RVP make?

    ReplyDelete
  38. I agree he is decent. Siggy has looked good this season.

    ReplyDelete
  39. If you ask me, this is Ayre's way of getting more for Suarez in the summer! Higher pay and more years on Suarez's deal will ensure a £55+ sale!

    ReplyDelete
  40. er ,, jamie k ,,, aka , the truth ,,, suarez at the moment wears a red shirt ,,, so get behind the lad ,, after reading this website for over 3 yrs ,,, i want to know ?? r u a manc ????

  41. Unfortunate the game is now this way

    ReplyDelete
  42. All this talk of tying Suarez down to another contract, particularly when he has stated clearly that he wants to leave, is just ludicrous. Far from whether or not he deserves it, it's poor management of a player, if we're trying to hold him here against his will, and trying to sweeten the imprisonment with extra cash. I say let him have this season, and if he wants to leave in January ensure contact with prospective clubs is established now, so that there won't be another prolonged saga which the club needs like another 35 million wasted. It is in our interest and his to seek an amicable solution, either we strengthen in Jan, push for and obtain a spot in the Champions league, or sell, utilise the money to strengthen and push on. Suarez might have treated the club disgracefully, but the club ought to be wary of being proven to be hypocrites in this affair.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Oh it's that easy? Great ! Just one thing though, who exactly is out there that is as good as Suarez AND would be persuaded to join a club with great history but no current involvement in Europe whatsoever? If you find someone who fits that bill, do let us know as we tried all summer to find him and failed. Hope you've got some good contacts! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  44. Errr.... Just one thing? Do we now get five points for a win? We are on ten points and Arsenal are on 15 points so to go top we will need five points and a few more goals! Would still be second though so I agree with your underlying point :0) playing six and losing one compared to Man U who have lost thrice and are in the bottom half of the table, that would be excellent :0)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Do you know his first season? Scored only 13 goals and yet Liverpool renewed his contract and then he scored 30 goals. Now he wants out of Liverpool, when did Liverpool had a chance to give him bumper contract? Liverpool had him on discount is stupid stupid statement really. If anything, he made Liverpool look silly all the time, he took Liverpool for granted and not the other way around.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Agreed - Suarez and his agents are probably eager for a new contract that explicitly states the buyout clause also, and in today's market £55m is a minimum for a player of Suarez's quality

    ReplyDelete
  47. Ditto, agreed. His first contract: He was signed from the Dutch league, so he should hardly expect to be given a big contract. His second contract was, like you say, after only 13 goals. The guy only has one full season of good form in one of the top 3/4 leagues. Not sure what he has done to earn to a bumper contract, especially with the all the rubbish he has brought on the club as well.

    ReplyDelete
  48. He got a pay rise in the summer for the remainder of his contract at Dortmund (apparently a £3m increase!) but yep, initially he wasn't on that much.

    ReplyDelete
  49. It is still much below par. His agent made it clear a while back that Dortmund didn't offer him good enough salary during contract negotiations and considering he is one of the best in Europe, he deserved that contract status. Part of being one of the big clubs is to keep the players happy. Dortmund aren't doing that it seems. Gotze and now Lewandowski

    ReplyDelete
  50. Did I not say "and we can secure a suitable replacement"? I thought I did, it seems to be written up there in black and white text, but I could be hallucinating again.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Yep, he is not near the likes of Aguero, Rooney, etc, in terms of financial package but Dortmund aren't the type of club to go that far at the moment and rightly so. Bayern are a financial level that no other club in Germany can match. Add to that and more importantly, Dortmund were in trouble financially not long ago and even Bayern had to loan them money (though only a small loan, when compared to the overall debt)(Bayern have helped out other German clubs too). So I think its understandable why ethically as well as financially that Dortmund aren't in a position to give Lewandowski. It is one of the reasons why they got into so much debt in the first players, i.e., giving big wages to players. I got no criticism of Dortmund in regards to financial power, as they have worked too hard since being on the verge of bankruptcy under a decade ago.

I understand Lewandowski reasons for going, whether it be financially or going to THE team in Germany but I also understand why Dortmund can not and should not rival the financial power of Bayern in terms of wages, as it is just simply too early since their financial resuscitation.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Not sure where my reply has gone :/

    ReplyDelete
  53. And that is the point I picked you up on! Easy to just say 'as long as we can find a replacement' but WHO? Now grow up with the childish sarcasm and discuss properly or don't bother at all. If you've got something meaningful to add to the discussion, let's hear it.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Listen mate, it's plain enough up above us right now that you're the one who started with the sarcasm and the smart ass comments, and you sure as hell don't get to tell anyone on this page how to behave, you're not my wife so give it a rest. I trust the manager and scouting group to have their targets or possible replacements and trying to second guess those guys is impossible. My view on the matter is that if we have such a player lined up and can secure them in time, we'll let Suarez go. That's pretty much exactly what I wrote in the first place. FFS, it's not my actual job to know who that's going to be, but yeah, IF the management group identifies such a player and can make the transfer then letting Suarez leaves becomes a relatively straightforward transaction. I don't think it's easy at all but we have a decent scouting group, at least in my opinion. Once the club feels we have that player locked down we'll be comfortable letting Suarez go.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Got yer. So if we do what we didn't manage to do in the whole of the summer window and find a player who is world class but doesn't mind coming to a team that can't currently offer anything other than domestic football, we should sign him up. Oh, and of course this world class player is affordable and not being chased by better-positioned clubs. Thanks for that, glad you made that clear.

    ReplyDelete
  56. My pleasure, I like to help people out.

    ReplyDelete
  57. LOL, good reply :0)

So genuinely, do you think we could find an appropriate replacement in January? I have to say that window is notoriously hard at the best of times. If you're not careful you get a wad of cash for a player and then waste most of it on another in a knee jerk reaction because without a replacement your season is screwed. Then you end up loaning that misfit player out before selling him for less than half what you paid.... Think you know what I'm referring to here!

Also, especially if Liverpool are doing ok and challenging for top four, it would be hard for Suarez to insist he is moving to get CL the following season. He has a lot to prove with regards loyalty right now (most thinking he has none!) so any comment about any other team - bar RM perhaps - would be read very negatively. Does he care? Only time will tell. But for sure, he will go on our terms and at our price, not cheaply.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Arsenal did not comply :( But second is still good. Of the teams near the top are flakey, for all their soldados, navas, paulinhos, or willians, they are flakey, it's liverpool's time to shine.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Look, I know the "if we can find the right player" is a big call, of course it is, and I don't say it lightly, although I do have faith in the scouting team. I was 100% for keeping Suarez in the summer because there didn't seem to be a real solution to replacing him. You don't really replace a guy like that, you just try to make sure you get a world class player with their own set of skills. But I think the back room will be working on it. No question he'll be looking to leave and as much as he'll get on with the job this season, he's eventually going to leave. I sense that what we have now is simply an acceptance that he'll stay and play but I cannot imagine the club is not preparing for him to go. So it really all comes down to the replacement and we won't sell him if we can't get that world class signing. But if we can line one up in January I'd be all for pulling the trigger and just getting it done. It might even be better than waiting for the summer when the vultures will circling and hoping to get him on the cheap. For me the best strategy is to locate a 40 million pound world class striker and simply buy him in January. I know, easier said than done, but it's what we'll try to do.
