Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher battled against many top class strikers during his Liverpool career, but who is the toughest goalscorer he's ever faced? Thierry Henry? Didier Drogba? Alan Shearer? Carra's answer is as surprising as it is unexpected.
When asked in a recent interview about the toughest striker he ever face, Carra told the Official LFC website:
"When I first got in the Liverpool team, [Pierluigi] Casiraghi was a tough one.
"It was the game where Phil Babb collided with the post [1-1 draw with Chelsea in 1998].
"I came off after the first half thinking 'Jesus Christ.' Watching the game on TV, you mightn't have noticed it but his movement was a real eye-opener. I didn't know where he was but I was still a young kid learning myself"
Ouch! I remember watching the game live at the time, and Casiraghi caused LFC's defence all kinds of problems. Phil Babb's collision with the post was so bad he got subbed after 20-odd minutes. At least he had the balls to give it another 15 minutes ;-)
As for Casiraghi - a month after the Liverpool game, he suffered a career-ending cruciate ligament injury, and ultimately made only 10 appearances for Chelsea in the 4 years he spent at the club.
Carra, on the other hand, played for LFC for another fifteen years.

One Word only can describe our number 23 and that is - LEGEND
ReplyDeleteReally wish Carra had a role in the club, he embodies LFC! I really hope we bring back former legends to the club, great experience and knowledge and a love for the club that we need to instil in the playing staff at the club! Whether they're coaching staff or Ambassadors, it could really help us push on to where we want and need to be! You see it at Man Utd now, and I think it's a system we could implement and keep evolving over the years, retain the character of the LFC family.
ReplyDeleteI always thought HENRY caused CARRA the most problems. He got put on his backside a few times.PHIL BABB was a very average defender but despite being a spice boy off the field nobody could question his commitment on it:-)
ReplyDeleteCasiraghi was such a class player, it was such a shame he got that injury
ReplyDeletelol i still remember that collision of Phil, ouch !! I personally thought that it was Thierry Henry.. Casiraghi was a classy player
ReplyDeleteGot a question I can't find the answer for anywhere will victor moses be the first Nigerian to play for LFC?
ReplyDeleteIf we had a countown for oppostition players who shook the KOP, Henry would easily be in the top 5…one of a small handfull of players I'm happy we don't have to worry about facing anymore
ReplyDeleteJordan ibe i think
ReplyDeleteIbe is English, born in Bermondsey!!
ReplyDeleteGonna be honest, I've never even heard of him
ReplyDeleteWe also have Tiago llori Jordan Ibe and Victor Moses of Nigerian descent
ReplyDeleteJamie Carragher? Played for liverpool etc
ReplyDeleteYeah, Jamie who? Never heard of him, this Casiraghi guy though, I've been following his career quite closely. Got posters of him on my wall, got his book and everything. But no, never heard of this Carragher guy. Who did you say he played for again? What position was he, was he a striker? Goalkeeper? Coach? You will have to enlighten me because I've only been a die hard Liverpool fan for 3 weeks now? I don't really know all these names from the past. Ask me about any of Liverpool's players from the modern ear and I can name them all. Ilori, Moses, Sakho, Cissoko, Mingolet, see I know them all. Sturrige!
ReplyDeleteWasnt Henry Gerrards pain in the arse
ReplyDeleteAlways worry's me with the African guys that they want the African cup of nations and its just at the worst place in the season
ReplyDeleteSame can be said for Luc Nilis, who I actually used to rate higher than his PSV strike partner, one Ruud van Nistlerooy. I remember the goal he scored for Aston Villa against Chelsea, now that was absolute class, he was very much of the same ilk as Bergkamp.
