Congolese striker Dieumerci Mbokani has confirmed that Liverpool were in the running to sign him this month, but the new Dynamo Kiev striker claims that the Reds didn't try hard enough to seal the deal.
Speaking to reporters last night, Mbokani - who signed for Kiev last week in a probable €10m deal (the price tag Anderlecht's GM placed on him in November) - explained:
"I am not sad not to be going to England. Liverpool didn't do enough to sign me and nor did the other English clubs"
Liverpool have been linked with 27-year old Mbokani several times over the last few years:
Jan 2013: He told The News that 'Liverpool are interested in me'.
June 2010: Mbokani claimed the Reds had bid for him. He told TalkSport :
"Liverpool gave me a good offer but I had already given the 'OK' to Monaco and I could not turn back on them."
Clearly, the man has principles, and didn't want to break his word, which is an admirable trait to have in the cynical, self-serving world of football.
DR Congo manager Claude Le Roy certainly thinks very highly of the striker's talents, and in December, he told Belgian newspaper La Derniere Heure:
"I've said that Dieumerci Mbokani is like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and I remain convinced that I am right. He is a luxury for a team in modern football, believe me".
Liverpool obviously didn't want Mbokani enough, but has the club missed out here? The Reds need another striker, and Mbokani grabbed 34 goals in 53 games for Anderlecht, which is a decent return.

No real loss.
ReplyDeleteWe've got Suarez, Sturridge, Aspas and Borini. Doubt we'll go in for another striker unless one of Suarez/Borini leaves.
ReplyDeleteI'm gutted..........LOL.
ReplyDeleteI think if we really wanted him then we would have tried harder, they have been pretty quick and direct in getting their other targets so I have faith in the liverpool hierarchy for once.
ReplyDeleteThe only party in this that 'lost out' is Mbokani, certainly not Liverpool
ReplyDeleteDude wasn't good enough for Wolfsburg so no loss for me. I doubt we were even interested
ReplyDeleteMbokani is the most overrated football player in Belgium. Mainly overrated by himself. He did well at Standard, couldn't stop talking about how he was much better than the club and how he needed to move abroad. So he did. Monaco, couldn't cut it. Wolfsburg, couldn't cut it. No one wanted him but Anderlecht who had to find a budget solution for losing Lukaku. He did well again at Anderlecht and that's why this entire season he's done nothing but mouth off about how he needed to move abroad and how he is too good to play in Belgium. So if you think this guy is a model professional just because he says he had to stick to his deal at Monaco, you don't quite have him sussed. Now, again, he's going to Kiev because western european clubs know he's just not good enough. Not a loss to anyone but Anderlecht.
ReplyDeleteI think Borini will do ok next season, depending on if he gets game time. If Suarez stays its hard to pick Borini over Sturridge or Suarez for the strikers role as both are doing really well. There is the spot on the left of attack but again Coutinho has that well covered. I`m sure Borini will get some games, but it will still be a struggle for him unless he is played when Suarez is still banned and has a flying start, making himself undropable.
ReplyDeleteNot exactly a slam, just a statement.
ReplyDeletecome on be serious ,the man was 27 way to old,was always a none starter
ReplyDeleteSounds like its you who were the only one intrested in this move
ReplyDeleteJoins Monaco and they get relegated, Joins Wolfsburg on loan and scores as many goals as Sean Dundee did for Liverpool (0 btw)
ReplyDeleteCan see why we didn't 'try' hard enough :)
Big story really no great lose
ReplyDeleteHow will i ever sleep knowing we missed out on a player like this!!! i mean he's so tal...........zzzzzzzzzz...........zzzzzzzzzzzz...........zzzzzzzzzzz
ReplyDeleteha ha ha.you are funny.you have put my thoughts out in a better simpler manner.
ReplyDeleteWho???
ReplyDeleteIts better that he was left alone. Hadn't made any impact out of Belgium.
